USA: WASHINGTON: JAPANESE EDO ART EXHIBITION PREVIEW
English/Nat
The Edo period in Japanese history is known for its flowering of art, performance and culture, marked by 250 years of peace dating from the seventeenth century.
Next week, the first major survey of Edo art in the United States will be unveiled to the public.
The exhibition of more than 300 works - many of them designated Japanese national treasures - is the largest showing of Japanese art outside the country in a decade.
It is the first time many of the rare pieces have left Japan.
In a meeting of modern technology and high art, visitors to the exhibition will get new insights into the vibrancy of Edo culture.
An interactive virtual Edo city transports visitors back in time, giving them glimpses of life inside Edo castle, the theatre district and shopping areas.
During the Edo period, peace in Japan and a stable economy made it possible for the arts to flourish among all sections of society, including the feudal military, merchants and commoners.
Highlights of the exhibition include a pair of six-sided screens - Sakai Hoitsu's Spring and Autumn Maples - a work never previously shown in public.
The screens have been in a storehouse for one hundred years and have been recently remounted.
The Edo period was one dominated by the Samurai.

The Samurai class was at the top of the social hierarchy, but over time they began to loose economic power. There was no warfare in the period, that's what characterises the period - two and a half centuries of peace. And we feature here the fanciful helmets that were parade helmets because war didn't take place. Certain accoutrements of the Samurai could be more fanciful and more playful. An artist featured is Miyamoto Musashi, who is famous for a book called the Book of Five Rings, and he's also one of the best painters of the period.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Singer, Guest curator of the Edo exhibition
Miyamoto Musashi was a masterless Samurai, also known as a ronin, who reputedly killed 60 swordsmen by the time he was 29.
Later in life he turned to Buddhism and the arts, producing wooden sculpture, metalwork, paintings and calligraphy.
The hanging scroll Shrike is the best-known of his ink paintings and shows a shrike perched on a slender branch poised to attack its prey.
The exhibition also features a collection of theatrical costumes.
At the time, the new Kabuki theatres treated contemporary events with humour and irreverence, and to avoid censorship often set events in the past.
In contrast to the elegance of traditional 'no' robes, Kabuki costumes feature bold designs.
The delicate nature of many of the works of art means the National Gallery in Washington will have to rotate the exhibits.
A modified exhibition will go on display in January.
Curator Robert Singer said it was difficult to get some of the work he wanted for the exhibition out of Japan.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There is a piece in the second half of the exhibition that's on the cover of the catalogue. It's a national treasure that's never left Japan and has only rarely been seen in Japan, and that really is the most extraordinarily difficult thing to have obtained.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Singer, Guest curator of the Edo exhibition
Religious life also features in the exhibition.
The popularity of Chinese legends in eighteenth century Japan prompted Shohaku's paintings of Daoist immortals, who had discovered the secret of eternal life.
The recently rediscovered paired screens - Scenes of a Festival in Edo - may be the earliest known reproductions of Edo, with the castle featuring prominently.
