Carmel-by-the-Sea, Girlfriends Getaway
The sun rose without you this morning. Not to worry; you're on the ultimate women's weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Besides, you've heard the sunsets are spectacular. So ease into it. Toss on the sweats you picked up when you pulled into town, grab the girls and wander down to that white stretch of sand known as Carmel Beach for a friendly fitness stroll. It's a good warm-up before your appointment at one of the day spas in town for a rejuvenating morning of massages, facials and maybe even a mani-pedi before lunch, overlooking the gardens at La Playa Hotel.
After a little more shopping at the Aspen-style Carmel Plaza, you wander out onto Carmel's main shopping street, which rolls through the middle of town. Styled in a most Bavarian tradition, with its gingerbread architecture and floral window boxes, cobbled passages and café dining, this is Ocean Ave., a legendary street the locals once resisted paving.
Today, Ocean Ave. is home to many of some 90 art galleries, as well as clothing boutiques, cafés and bistros, specialty and souvenir shops. Locals and visitors alike know that an entire day can be quickly ransomed by shopping one's way down one side of the long, downhill slope and looping around to the other before it reaches the sand and spills into the ocean.
The ocean-bound boulevard invites beachcombers to take a break from the sun and walk uptown for a snack or change of scenery. But don't forget to cover up; a century-old covenant still restricts bikini-clad shoppers from shocking the streets of Carmel.
While Ocean Ave. has much to offer, a myopic shopper would spend all her time on Main Street, missing out on the labyrinth of side streets and passageways whose offerings are equally rewarding. Such as Dolores St., which bisects Ocean Ave. and has become a haven for art galleries and antique shops of all genres, as well as its own eclectic array of clothing boutiques, bistros and specialty shops. Another artery is Sixth Avenue, whose three-block expanse parallels Ocean Ave. to offer yet another vein of interesting art galleries and restaurants.
Along a valley road that wanders some 15 miles through the verdant terrain, you will encounter three 18-hole golf courses, among them Rancho Cañada, Quail Lodge and the Carmel Valley Ranch. Characterized by warm days and cool nights, the climate, coupled with a course, gravely soil that challenges vines but enhances the flavor in the fruit, creates an ideal environment for growing grapes in what has become one of the finest wine regions in the world.
Not everybody knows that.
Renowned for its coastal splendor, the Monterey County landscape is also dedicated to nearly 40,000 acres of wine grapes and some 75 wineries and growers, whose tasting rooms clustered throughout the valley and in Carmel-by-the-Sea provide testament to the quality of the crush.
With great golf, fine wine and a wonderland of extreme sports and outdoor activities, it's also a great getaway for the guys. Maybe next time.
27400 Heavens Way, Carmel Valley, California
Nestled amongst the oaks of Carmel Valley, this European-inspired estate transports you to a place of country elegance and privacy. Experience sweeping valley views in a serene setting that feels a world away yet is conveniently located between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Valley village. Quality craftsmanship, exquisite materials and thoughtful design combine to create a home that is both impressive and comfortable with six luxuriously appointed en-suite bedrooms. The heart of the home is indisputably the striking, two-story living room with soaring open-beam cathedral ceilings and oversized fireplace that adjoins the designer kitchen, breakfast room, formal dining room and distinguished office. From throughout the ground floor, French sliding doors open onto the terrace landscaped with olive trees, vines and lavender that complement the native oaks. And upstairs the generous family room with media screen, bedrooms and balconies offer captivating views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The substantial eleven-acre parcel coupled with an ideal mid-valley location make this old-world inspired estate an unmatched combination of privacy, luxury and convenience.

Walk down Main Street in downtown Carmel Arts and Design Distric
Ryan Dorman walks by bubs burgers, carmel high school, the arts and design district, state farm, evan lurie gallery, scottys, pint room, old town pub, muldoons, woodys, California closets and the monon trail.
Located in the heart of Old Town Carmel, Indiana, the Arts & Design District is the Midwest’s premier arts and design destination. It is home to interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, restaurants, antique stores and a variety of specialty retail shops.
Direct link to Carmel Arts & Design District website
Background:
This area has been part of the redevelopment plan of Mayor Jim Brainard to work with the Carmel Redevelopment Commission to transform Old Town Carmel from a run down and very neglected part of town into the vibrant and thriving Carmel Arts & Design District, while maintaining the area's historic charm. Before the real work could begin on the District, Mayor Brainard invested more than $10 million on adding storm sewers, curbs, sidewalks with brick accents, historic-style street lighting, improved streets and water mains to ensure that the Old Town neighborhood was brought up to Carmel standards. After those upgrades were complete, the redevelopment efforts intensified to bring galleries, unique shops, restaurants and the Indiana Design Center to the Arts & Design District.
To show their commitment to identifying the Old Town area as the Arts & Design District, the City installed archways over the main entrances to the district. The newly created district logo was added to street lights further branding the area and reminding visitors they were enjoying the Carmel Arts & Design District. Eventually, flower baskets, flower boxes at windows, benches, out door sculptures and bump out curb dining complemented the experience in the district.
Throughout the redevelopment of this area, the City has used public private partnerships to encourage investment by the private sector in the area. The City identified the best areas for redevelopment, purchased and combined small lots and combined them and made them ready for development, and created a plan for the area so that the private sector could come in and begin work more easily.
Today, the Carmel Arts & Design District is home to more that 11 distinct galleries, unique shops, boutiques, antique dealers, and restaurants for every palate. The vibrant night life in the District includes a wine tasting experience, live music, neighborhood pubs and even comedy nights.
Residential Options:
While the neighborhood in and around the Arts & Design District continues to thrive, additional residential options have added to the constant vibrancy of the area including condos and apartments above some of the commercial space and along the Monon Greenway, which runs through the heart of the District.
A Sound Investment:
The Arts & Design District continues to grow and offer more and more amenities for residents and visitors. We hope you enjoy this area that has truly been transformed into one of Carmel's most successful redevelopment projects.
Ai Weiwei On Alcatraz & Pet-friendly Carmel-by-the-Sea with Host Lisa Keating
The @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz exhibit is an inspirational, uplifting show of color, light and even whimsy, with a profound depth and thought provoking message. There are several parts to the exhibit, located in four main areas of the former penitentiary: With Wind dominated by a massive dragon suspended from the ceiling and colorful kites that look like self portraits of the artist, Trace covering an immense span of floor with portraits rendered from Legos, Refraction another suspended piece, cold and grey viewed from the narrow guard gallery, Stay Tuned a sound installation in 12 separate cells, Illumination a pair of tiled chambers used to observe mentally ill inmates in what was once the Hospital, Blossom where porcelain flowers fill pin spotted tubs, toilets and wash basins and Yours Truly where you can read about and correspond with detainees and political prisoners in various countries around the world. Book your ticket to see this once in a lifetime display well in advance of your visit. The show will be at Alcatraz through April 2015. Read all about our experiences on Alcatraz, in San Francisco and in Carmel-by-the-Sea as we travel by car on a 4 day California Adventure!

ANNE GOES TO: Big Sur | yummiebitez
Sorry for being away for a while, but I'm back at it again with another episode of Anne Goes To. This time, I'm roughing it up to Big Sur! Yes, I can do nature and get dirty once in awhile. This is my third time camping (in my lifetime), and it's always a different and fun experience for me. You can watch my very first camping experience on this vlog (
SUBSCRIBE
If you guys are not familiar with Big Sur, it's in Central California along the coast via Highway 1. It starts from San Simeon and stretches to Carmel. It's definitely one of the most scenic drives I've ever taken. It's a long and windy drive but the view is breathtaking. I highly suggest you make the drive (in the daytime) at least once in your life.

Although we didn't get to actually camp in Big Sur, it was still a super fun trip. We manage to find a camp site in Monterey and explored the area. We made our tourist pit stops in Big Sur on the way back home.
» Splash Cafe
1491 Monterey St
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
- Come here for the clam chowder!
» CA-Hwy 46 passing through Paso Robles
- We missed the 1-fwy entrance via 101 fwy, so we had to cut through the 46 fwy so we could get take CA-1 fwy for the scenic route. However, not regretting this detour since the drive was so unreal with views that I thought were just desktop screen savers. They also have a lot of wineries in this stretch of road. Will definitely want to come back for a wine tasting trip here.
