Shanghai Bund walk from Garden Bridge October 2009
The Bund in China's Shanghai stretches one mile along the bank of the Huangpu River. Traditionally, the Bund begins at Yan'an Road (formerly Edward VII Avenue) in the south and ends at Waibaidu Bridge (formerly Garden Bridge) in the north, which crosses Suzhou Creek. The Bund centres on a stretch of the Zhongshan Road, named after Sun Yat-sen. Zhongshan Road is a largely circular road which formed the traditional conceptual boundary of Shanghai city proper. To the west of this stretch of the road stands some 52 buildings of various Western classical and modern styles which is the main feature of the Bund. David Smith of Interactive Selection took this film on a trip to GDC China in October 2009.

The Park Huangpu lies on the north side of Bund. The tower in the memory of a popular hero stands there. On the opposite bank, one sees the Pudong New District with its consulate in Russia. The garden bridge is the oldest metal bridge in China and was built by the British. Starting from March 2008 a part of the bridge was removed for repairing.

Waibaidu Bridge Shanghai China The Bund
Every great city has its landmark bridge. London has its Tower Bridge, San Francisco has the Golden Gate Bridge. What about Shanghai? In the minds of many locals, the honor should go to the centennial Waibaidu Bridge (Garden Bridge). For more than a century, the graceful steel Waibaidu Bridge has remained one of the best preserved symbols of Shanghai.
Waibaidu Bridge is the first all-steel bridge in China, and the only surviving example of a camelback truss bridge. The fourth foreign bridge built in the downstream of the estuary of Suzhou Creek, near its confluence with the Huangpu River and adjacent to the Bund in central Shanghai, and connecting Huangpu and Hongkou districts, the present bridge was opened on 20 January, 1908.Seen from any angle, the bridge is an appealing site. To its south is the city's fabled Bund, to its north there is the Shanghai Mansions, formerly called Broadway Mansions, and the Russian consulate-general building.

Waibaidu Bridge
Waibaidu Bridge formerly named Garden Bridge was initially constructed in 1856 in British Concession Area by the British over Suzhou Creek (on River Wusong) about 100 meters before confluence of River Wusong and River Huangpu. It is 350 feet long towards the north end of the Bund. It is the earliest and largest steel bridge and a landmark in the city. First of all a wooden bridge was got constructed by the British. It was free for Europeans living on both sides of the river but Chinese has to pay the toll tax which was very annoying for the locals. The present steel bridge was constructed in 1907. Standing on this bridge is stunning and one can have a wonderful view of Shanghai during the day as well as night. It is one of the best scenic spots in Shanghai.

Walking the Bund in Shanghai (Day Time)
The Bund or Waitan / 外滩 / 外灘 (literally: Outer Beach) is a waterfront area in central Shanghai (The word bund means an embankment or an embanked quay). The area centers on a section of Zhongshan Road (East-1 Zhongshan Road) within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. Building heights are restricted in the area.
The Bund stretches one mile (1.6 km) along the bank of the Huangpu River. Traditionally, the Bund begins at Yan'an Road (formerly Edward VII Avenue) in the south and ends at Waibaidu Bridge (formerly Garden Bridge) in the north, which crosses Suzhou Creek. The Bund houses 52 buildings of various architectural styles, generally Eclecticist, but with some buildings displaying predominantly Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Baroque Revival, Neo-Classical or Beaux-Arts styles, and a number in Art Deco style (Shanghai has one of the richest collections of Art Deco architectures in the world).
The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. It was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined in the International Settlement. Magnificent commercial buildings in the Beaux Arts style sprung up in the years around the turn of the 20th century as the Bund developed into a major financial center of east Asia. Directly to the south, and just northeast of the old walled city, the former French Bund (the quai de France, part of the Shanghai French Concession) was of comparable size to the Bund but functioned more as a working harbourside.
By the 1940s, the Bund housed the headquarters of many, if not most, of the major financial institutions operating in China, including the big four national banks in the Republic of China era. However, with the Communist victory in the Chinese civil war, many of the financial institutions were moved out gradually in the 1950s, and the hotels and clubs closed or converted to other uses. The statues of colonial figures and foreign worthies which had dotted the riverside were also removed.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the thawing of economic policy in the People's Republic of China, buildings on the Bund were gradually returned to their former uses.

Shanghai Botanical Garden | Travel China | 上海植物园 | 上海7日游
Shanghai Botanical Garden is the biggest municipal botanical garden in China. It has a large collection of thousands of plants, including some rare species. Plants either from home or abroad are nurtured here. First named Longhua Nursery Garden in 1954, it turned into Shanghai Botanical Garden in 1974 and finally opened to the public in April, 1978. Now it has an area of 81.86 hectares (about 202 acres). After decades of construction, it has become a comprehensive base combining plants research, production, tourism and nature science education and has won many prizes in international flower shows.
