When Is It Okay? Restarting Sports After 9/11 - 2/28/19
Sports are central to American life, a role that was particularly apparent in the aftermath of 9/11. They helped the country mourn and move forward after the attacks, offering a space for collective grief and camaraderie — a space shared by fans and players alike. Leading this charge were the league commissioners, those ultimately faced with how to best respond and support a reeling nation in a post-9/11 world. Mike Greenberg, longtime SportsCenter anchor and current host of ESPN’s Get Up!”, will discuss these decisions with those who made them, including NBA Commissioner Emeritus David J. Stern, WNBA Founding President and Big East Conference Commissioner Val Ackerman, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, and current NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. All four are Honorary Exhibition Co-chairs of the current special exhibition Comeback Season: Sports After 9/11.

9/11 Flag Dedication in Murrells Inlet
Six hundred miles south of Ground Zero in New York City and nine years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Morse Park Landing in Murrells Inlet was the site of a 9/11 flag dedication on this day of national mourning and reflection.
In coordination with Murrells Inlet 2020 and the Georgetown County Parks and Recreation Department, the Woodmen of the World unveiled a new American flag and flagpole near the Lost At Sea Memorial at Morse Park Landing on Saturday.
Al Hitchcock of Murrells Inlet 2020 gave the introduction. Jennifer Averette, executive director, coordinated the effort, and Tom Swartzel, vice president, ML 2020 gave an address9, linking the flag ceremony to events of nine years ago. In making the flag presentation, Julie Brannock of Woodmen of the World explained how her organization celebrates patriotism in this and many ways. Representing the Georgetown County Sheriffs Department was Sheriff Lane Cribb and Lt. Amy Glover, and personnel of the Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire and Rescue Department were led by Chief Norman Knight.
The Lost At Sea Memorial was established in April of 2005 by the family of Johnny W. Brown, who native of Horry County and a Commercial Fisherman out of Murrells Inlet. On April 2, 2005, the fishing vessel that Johnny was aboard was hit by a 30 to 40 feet rogue wave. Two of the crew members were rescued but Brown was lost at sea.
As a tribute to Brown and all of those lost at sea, his family, with the help of many, raised money to place a monument in Morse Park Landing in Murrells Inlet. The monument, almost eight feet high and consisting of three black granite sides, was unveiled April 2, 2006, the first anniversary of the loss of Brown.
On the side facing the jetties of Murrells Inlet, is a life sized etching of Brown. The other two sides names have names of others lost, which are added yearly, if needed. These people came from all walks of life and some loses date back to 1925. There are rescue pilots, a harbor pilot, fishermen and crew members from military vessels.
Approximately 600 miles north of Murrells Inlet nine years ago, the 9/11 attacks were a series of coordinated suicide terrorist attacks on the United States. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in NYC, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others, according to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
About 400 miles north of Murrells Inlet, the hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville rural Pennsylvania, after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward the capital. There were no survivors from any of the flights, according to the online encyclopedia.
The death toll of the attacks was 2,996, including the 19 hijackers. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries, according to the online encyclopedia. The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and the Pentagon Memorial was built adjacent to the building. The rebuilding process has started on the World Trade Center site in 2006.
