ANTONI GAUDI'S BARCELONA - FOUR UNEARTHLY BUILDINGS YOU MUST-SEE IN BARCELONA
ANTONI GAUDI'S BARCELONA - FOUR UNEARTHLY BUILDINGS YOU MUST-SEE IN BARCELONA
Welcome to Gaudi's Barcelona! Architects, artists, engineers, travellers and vagabonds alike, make their way to the Catalonian capital in a sort of 'design pilgrimage', visiting the surreal moderisme (Spain's version of Art Nouveau) masterpieces of architect, Antoni Gaudi! I visited four of his most prominent works and was blown away by his incorporation of natural forms in his building's structure and aesthetics. I've listed below a little bit of these 'unearthly' buildings history, and why you must-see them when visiting Barcelona!
I am an architectural designer and travel blogger at I travel to experience, document and share the best in architectural design, be it ancient or ultra modern - design is my life! #Travel4Architecture

Casa Batlló by Gaudí in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Casa Batlló by Gaudí is one of the great buildings of the 20th century, a must-visit when you are in Barcelona. This unusual house looks alive, with curved lines and organic shapes creating a wonderful experience. We learn about it from our excellent guide, Sandra Benzal, who you can find through aguideinbarcelona. Sandra explains that Antoni Gaudí rebuilt and designed this structure on commission from the Batlló family, who wanted a new home in the Modernist style in the early 1900s. Beautiful when viewed for free from outside, on Passeig de Gràcia, it gets more interesting when you pay to go inside, as we show you in this video. Walk up the beautiful staircase to the main room with its amazing large curved window for a very special experience, then continue to the roof-top and see the ceramic dragon.

Casa Batlló w/ Augmented Reality! Gaudí Barcelona
What's your favorite room of Casa Batlló?
A walk through of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló in Barcelona, Catalunya (Spain).
Like everything Gaudí designed, the architectural and ornamental elements of this building is inspired by nature: curved windows, undulating walls, stain glass resembling ocean organisms.
The tour includes a useful Augmented Reality guide. This handheld multimedia device enhances the tour experience with audio narration and overlays of graphics in the rooms.
Book online to visit!
0:27 Historical Background- Gaudí was commissioned by industrialist Josep Batlló to renovate an old building on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona. This would serve as a home for the Batlló family and apartments for tenants.
0:48 Main Facade - The front of the house is cloaked in colorful broken glass mosaic called trencadís ( The balconies resemble skulls, sea shells and parchment paper. The lower facade is curved with pillars that resemble bones and plants. If you look closely you can see smalls openings for drainage and ventilation.
1:24 Augmented Reality - As you explore the house, look through the screen and you will see useful graphics overlayed on the room. For example, if you are standing in the kitchen, you can pan around the room and see an old dinner table and chairs on the screen. Also, if you place the Augmented Reality device over certain objects, they will come to life!
1:44 Central Patio - This central light well is reminiscent of an underwater ocean scene. It was the axis of the house, providing light and heat to the apartments. The ceramic tiles are different shades of blue to maintain equal illumination at different heights.
2:17 Main Room - Located on the main floor, this room has curved walls and a giant window to illuminate the parlor. The circular stain glass designs resemble ocean creatures such as nautilus and jellyfish.
2:44 Fireplace Room - This room houses a fireplace of organic design concealed in mushroom shaped hallow.
3:00 Back Terrace - Enjoy the back patio and its colorful mosaic designs and ceramic decorations.
3:09 The Attic - In contrast to the other floors, this floor was relatively minimalist in design and focused on utility. It houses service areas such as laundry facilities and firewood storage. The white parabolic arches resemble rib cage of a giant animal.
3:37 Roof - Ceramic tiles on the rooftop resmble like dragon scales. A popular theory is that the roof was designed to look like the dragon slain by St George. The cross symbolizes the sword that killed the dragon.
4:02 Mushroom Chimneys - the sculptures serve as functioning chimneys connected to the kitchen and fireplaces.
4:33 Mapping of Casa Batlló - This is an Audiovisual projection on the facade of the house. This annual show reveals all the symbols and interpretations that inspired Antoni Gaudí when creating this artwork.

If someone asked me what would be the best itinerary if you only had one day in Barcelona I would hands-down say exploring the many buildings and parks of the world-famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi is your best bet. In this video we start at his most famous accomplishment - La Sagrada Familia, then work our way up towards the Gracia neighborhood to experience Park Güell. An incredible public park with some of the best views of the entire city. Next, we explored Casa Vicens which was his first large commission. And finally, we finished the day with sunset on the roof of Casa Mila also known as La Pedrera.
We got a chance to learn so much about Gaudi but also about the history of Barcelona through the well-curated exhibits, especially at Casa Vicens (which only opened a year and a half ago!).
We are planning on making another video about our Top 10 Favorite Things to Do in Barcelona and can't wait to show you more of the city where Lou and I fell in love.
Thanks for watching!
