One of the TravelTalks series of films made by James A. Fitzpatrick, THE GATEWAY TO INDIA showcases the city of Bombay, India.
At mark 0:36 is the city of Bombay, a gateway to India. At mark 0:45 is the gate cell. Bombay is the second largest city in India and one of the chief sea port of the area. At mark 1:15 is the Tile Mahara hotel, the most pretentious one in India. At mark 1:36, is a scene showing a transition between the modern civilization and the ancient. Here, we see the modern and the ancient form of vehicle. Men are seen riding on horse wagons. At mark 2:18, is the famous race spot in Bombay. Here, is gathered representative from every nationality to partake. At mark 2:45 are the Parsee women. They are descendants of exiled prisoners. The entire populations now count to fifty thousand. At mark 3:14, you find Parsee merchants, traders, herd, Japanese, Chinese, British all part of the cosmopolitan crowds of Bombay.
Just a short distance from Bombay at mark 3:40, is a village. All the people who live here are engaged in the fish industry. Here, many of them are vegetarians and would not eat fish of any kind due to religion. At mark 4:233, two boys are seen weaving. At mark 4:32 are two young women from the clan both putting on a sari. It is a one piece garment. Looking close to these young ladies at mark 4:45, a red dot is both seen on each forehead which signifies that they are married or are legible for marriage. At mark 4:58, is a flower pot containing a Tosi plant showing an emblem of virtue which is worshipped exclusively by all Indian girls. This is backed up with a story at mark 5:05. At mark 5:22, a woman is seen drying the fishes caught. The fish is first soaked in salt water, then tied and sundried. At mark 5:42, these women are tying small shrimps until it is sorted and dried. It is then used to prepare their famous curry.
At mark 5:54, is a scene of royal elephants on parade. This is a social event. The headpieces worn by these elephants are made of solid gold and magnificent jewels. At mark 6:49 is a far view of Bombay. This is Bombay a gateway to India. At mark 7:22 is the Bombay river port.
Mumbai (also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million. Along with the neighbouring regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world and the second most populous metropolitan area in India, with a population of 20.7 million as of 2011. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India,[14] and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West, or Central Asia.[15] Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires among all cities in India.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company when in 1661 King Charles II married the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, and as part of her dowry Charles received the ports of Tangier and seven islands of Bombay.[18] During the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea] Along with construction of major roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845, transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay in the 19th century was characterised by economic and educational development. During the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon India's independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital.

Indian Street Food Tour in Mumbai - Bombay Duck Fry and AMAZING Vada Pav!
SUBSCRIBE NOW►
Read my blog about Vada Pav:
Day 3: Mumbai, India - To begin the day we took a quick trip to Elephanta Island to see the Elephanta caves. We then came back to Mumbai, and had amazing Bombay duck at Gomantak restaurant, and then proceeded to have one of the greatest Mumbai street foods, called vada pav.
00:22 Elephanta Caves (boat ride 180 INR ($2.69) - One of the worthwhile attractions in Mumbai is the Elephanta Caves, which are a series of historical religious temple caves located on an island off the coast of Mumbai. To get there, you can take a boat from the Gateway of India. We decided to go there first thing in the morning to try to avoid the crowds. I thought it was well worth it.
6:56 Gomantak Boarding House (Dadar West) - One of the top Mumbai foods I wanted to try when I was in Mumbai was Bombay duck, also known and bombil, which is actually not duck at all, but lizardfish. We took a taxi to Dadar West and went to a restaurant called Gomantak that specializes in Malvani cuisine (from the area of Mumbai) and always has Bombay duck on their menu. I ordered the Bombay duck fry, fried pieces of lizardfish that came with the full thali set, including rice and a few curries and chutneys on the side. I also couldn’t resist ordering a side dish of pomfret masala. One interesting thing from this amazing Mumbai restaurant was solkadhi - made from coconut milk and kokum fruit, and it was my first time to try it. Total price - 710 INR ($10.60)
14:14 Ashok Vada Pav - One of the most important Mumbai street food snacks is vada pav, which is a fried potato cutlet stuffed into a bun and seasoned with some flavorful chutneys and spices. It’s sometimes known as the Mumbai vegetarian burger. Ashok Vada Pav is known for serving one of the best vada pav in Mumbai, and they also have some serious history to them. When I took my first bite, I knew exactly why it was so popular. It was absolutely sensationally delicious. It was a little on the salty side, but the vada pav was so good, with a balance of salty, spicy, sweet, and crunchy. Vada pav is one of the most popular Mumbai street foods, but at Ashok vada pav you’ll find one of the best in Mumbai. Vada pav (vada pao) - 20 INR ($0.30).
18:36 Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum - 100 INR ($1.49) - After the amazing vada pav, we took a taxi over to the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, which is another good museum to visit when you are in Mumbai. I especially liked the actual building.
19:58 Bagdadi Restaurant - For dinner we headed back to Colaba near to our hotel and ate at another legendary Mumbai restaurant known for serving north Indian Mughlai food. The one dish I had to order was chicken masala fry, and I also got daal and palak paneer. Although all the food was indeed on the buttery and oily side, it was incredibly delicious. Total price - 515 INR ($7.70).
Thank you for watching this Mumbai food and travel video. The highlight of the day was the Bombay duck fry and the Mumbai street food vada pav.

Indian Food in Mumbai - HARDCORE Non-Veg Nalli Nihari and Bombay Street Food Sandwich!
In Mumbai get ready to eat some amazing Indian food!

Day 4: Mumbai, India - To start the day we met up with Myron, who is from Mumbai, and we headed over to explore Crawford Market. We stopped at a restaurant called Noor Mohammadi for a stunning dish called nalli nihari, and then had one of the most fascinating Mumbai street food sandwiches I’ve ever seen. It was a great day of food in Mumbai!
1:27 Crawford Market (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) - We started off the morning by walking around what’s known as Crawford Market. The market is indoor and there’s just about anything you can imagine for sale from food to household supplies.
3:55 Noor Mohammadi Hotel (Restaurant) - This restaurants was one of the highlights of this day in Mumbai, and we came here specifically to eat a hardcore non-veg dish called nalli nihari. Typically in India the dish is made from buffalo and it includes bone marrow in the stew as well. It was incredibly oily and fatty, but also incredibly delicious. It was like richness on top of richness, and every single bite of the nalli nihari was worth it. The nalli nihari was especially good with the tandoori roti.
9:05 Bhendi Bazaar - After enjoying the nalli nihari, we then took a walk through Bhendi Bazaar, another action packed street market in Mumbai. There’s always something going on at Bhendi Bazaar, and some kind of action taking place.
10:30 Mumbai sandwich (Bombay sandwich) - When I spotted a man making sandwiches, I couldn’t wait to try it. Known commonly as the Bombay veg or Bombay chutney sandwich, but now also called the Mumbai sandwich, this is a favorite street food snack in Mumbai. You don’t normally think of sandwiches when you think of Indian food, but there are countless sandwich stalls in Mumbai. In contrast to the non-vegetarian dish I had previously, this Mumbai sandwich was vegetarian, and I got a mix of all the toppings, including tomato, onion, beetroot, cucumber, and cheese, all layered with chutney, and grilled in a fire. The sandwich was quite tasty, especially in a large part because of the different chutneys.
14:20 Haji Ali Juice Center / Haji Ali Dargah - Next we took a taxi over to Haji Ali Dargah (mosque), and had a juice at the legendary Haji Ali Juice Center. Unfortunately when we visited Haji Ali Mosque, the ocean tide was too high, so couldn’t walk to it.
16:46 Mount Mary Church - We then headed to Bandra and first stopped off at Mount Mary Church, one of the most famous basilica’s in Mumbai.
17:39 Castella de Aguada - Next we went to walk around Castella de Aguada, an old Portuguese fort, that’s now more like a park and a popular hangout spot.
19:00 Elco Restaurant - Since we were in the area, for snack we went to Elco and to have some chaat. We tried sev puri and dahi puri, both of which were very good, and it was nice to get some AC and relaxation indoors for a little while.
20:50 Milk dessert - While we were walking around Myron spotted a cart selling a type of milk dessert made from the first milk (colostrum). It was indeed very interesting.
22:16 Jai Jawan (Khar branch) - Finally for dinner, out last stop of the day, we walked over to a restaurant called Jai Jawan to eat their prawns fry and tandoori chicken. Dinner was amazing, Jai Jawan is a fantastic restaurant.

A Tale of Two Cities - Mumbai & Bombay
The layers of history and multiplicity of people residing in Mumbai is astounding.
But what they have in common with each other is a restlessness and a single minded pursuit to make it big. 'A Tale of Two Cities - Mumbai and Bombay' is a discovery through languages, kinship structures, cultures of the diversity and consciousness of a Mumbai dweller. The city has the densest railway network, with more than 6 million people commuting everyday. Mumbai port is the busiest and largest in India with over 40% of the maritime trade passing from this dock alone. Mumbai offers something new every time one looks out of the window.

Mumbai (Bombay), India, City impressions with Marine Drive & Crawford Market
Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is one of the biggest cities on earth. It is supposed to have around 21 million people in its area now. The city is unbelieveable wealthy and incredible poor at the same time. These city impressions e.g. show the Marine Drive, the Victoria Terminus and Crawford Market.
