Roddy Lloyd | Managing Director Rowley's Auctioneers:
'Daphne du Maurier was a story teller and was really a romantic writer although most of her books had a dark and evil side to them. We've got a very exciting sale coming up on Saturday the 27th April and a lot of the letters have not been seen before. She was quite, er fruity in her language and she wasn't one to hold back when it came to criticising other people. So they're very interesting, fascinating letters all about relationships between her, her husband and various friends. Her husband was Lieutenant General Frederick 'Boy' Browning, who was a dashing guard's officer, after the war he worked at Buckingham Palace originally for the Princess Elizabeth at the time and for the Duke of Edinburgh and they became very close friends over a long period'.
Kristen Baker-Munton | Son of Maureen Baker-Munton:
'So my mother went to a party in India, she was brought up in India, at which Boy Browning was present and he needed a PA. They must have got on well. She said to Boy Browning that she couldn't be his PA because she'd need her bicycle and her bicycle was with her mother somewhere else in India so Boy lent her his plane to go and pick it up and it was later on when she came back with Boy Browning to work with him in England that she then got to know his wife Daphne du Maurier'.
Will Axon | Valuer:
'Well what's very unusual about this collection is that it spans a great many years in the relationship between Daphne and Maureen. When you first read about Daphne meeting Maureen there's an element of suspicion there because she's been with her husband abroad, she's maybe suspicious that she's been his 'bit on the side' shall we say but then as she gets to know Maureen and the warmth and the relationship there grows I think you see a real change in tone through the letters'.
Kristen Baker-Munton | Son of Maureen Baker-Munton:
'I've seen photographs of my mother when she was young and she was very glamorous and the time that she had in the Far East, South East Asia towards the end of the war, she was included in parties when Mountbatten came out and that sort of things. I'm sure during war time she provided a bit of colour to their evenings and I I don't know what Daphne might have made of this of course from a distance and, er she, my mother first met Daphne when she and Boy landed back in England and Daphne had come to meet Boy off the plane, so thoughts could have been anything really. So when my mother came back to England, she was working for him at the palace and then after the coronation she moved with Boy to Prince Philip's staff. Initially when my mother was working inLondon with Boy, Daphne was writing and didn't come up to London or if she did not very much so the initial correspondence with Daphne was like you would with staff, so she would receive a request to perhaps pick the children up from the train when they came back from school. Sometime later she went down to, at weekends with Boy to stay at Menabilly and met Daphne, got to know Daphne better at that time but I think was helping with chores. I've had a chance to look through all the letters and see that transition from staff to confidant and friend. So after my parents and had me my mother asked Daphne's husband Boy to be my godfather. When I was young we used to drive down to Cornwall to stay with Boy and Daphne for a summer holiday. We drove straight through the centre of London, at I don't know 5 o'clock in the morning or something, very long journey, no motorways and I remember distinctly the drive down to the house Menabilly, the greenery and wild garlic and it was overgrown and there was a darkness to it. And it is so reminiscent of the opening lines of 'Rebecca' 'last night I dreamt that I went to Manderley' and you get to the end of the drive and this, I was young, I mean it must be a big house, but it seemed to me to be gargantuan. So I was a young man, of course I knew nothing about the complications of the relationships and everything else. I suppose I first became aware of that when Margaret Forster was writing the biography and my parents were, obviously my mother had a big collection of letters and I remember conversations over dinner about whether things should be withheld and there were then conversations with the family and the lawyers and it was all quite complicated. Like many writers Daphne had phrases and nicknames

Edinburgh's New Town Charlotte Square to Waterloo Place
Charlotte Square houses some of the most beautiful Georgian buildings in the city. These date back to the late 1700's. The north side of the square is home to Bute House which is the official residence of Scotland's First Minister in the Country's Devolved Parliament. The New Town was conceived as a result of a competition for a design to ease the overcrowded conditions suffered by the residents down from the castle. It became the place for the wealthy to stay - probably still is. The general layout of the original group of buildings was to have a large square at each end of a long street. Today there are many extra streets added but the original Charlotte Square joined by George Street to St Andrews Square still exists. A parallel street to the north is Queen Street while the famous Princes Street runs to the to the south.
This video starts at the West End, the Charlotte Square end then leads the viewer along George Street towards St Andrews Square. Another early idea was to have a major church at each end, these being St George's Church and St Andrews Church. Today the two churches have been amalgamated into St Georges and St Andrews church and these are based, in one building, near the north east end of George Street. The original St George's is now West Register House an important repository for the country's documentation.
This video was made on a very damp and windy day so apologies for the shakiness. Viewers might be interested to note the steepness of the streets running at right angles north and south of George Street. Edinburgh is a very hilly city.

Wedding Of Jane Wolfson (1952)

Titles read: 'LONDON JULY 6TH 1952 - JANE WOLFSON WEDS JEROME STERN'. (Commentary throughout.)
Grosvenor Square, London.
General views of Grosvenor Square. Exterior shot of house Number 47; C/U of number above door. Inside we see several shots of Jane Wolfson, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Wolfson, walking about in her wedding gown and veil. A woman called Valerie adjusts the outfits of two little bridesmaids, Christine and Victoria, while another young woman, Patricia Footring, looks on. Pageboy David Esdale, in kilt, enters room to have a look at the bride and gives her a kiss. Charles Wolfson and his wife with another young man and woman look on. Jane sits down and her mother adjusts the dress and veil for her.
Car pulls up outside the house and Mrs Stern (groom's mother) gets out and goes inside. Several shots of wedding gifts. Shot of portrait of late Solomon Wolfson JP, grandfather of Jane. Several shots of Jane and others getting into car and driving off. Car arrives at St John's Wood Synagogue. High angle view of Jane and her father walking down aisle while wedding march is played. Guests look on. Bridesmaids and page in attendance. Wedding service takes place under canopy, then the couple sign the register with witnesses Max Kettner and Effie Propp.
Various shots of the reception at the Dorchester Hotel - panning shot of huge wedding cake. Jane and Jerome and their parents greet guests arriving - Alice and Arthur Levin, Mr and Mrs Clifford Morgan, Jack and Bebe Steinburg with daughter Catherine, ballroom couple Rosie and Sam, Alexander Stone, artist Pietro Annigonni, Mrs Lotte Burson and daughter Debbie, Chief Rabbi Dr Israel Brodie, Mortie and Annie Propp, Ruth and Leonard, Uncle Harry, Betty and Martin, Ralph Specterman, cartoonist David Langdon, Paul and Norma Jacobson, Claude and Olga Henry with Simon Gerstler.
Bride and groom make their way to table in banquet room and take their seats. More shots of guests - Mr and Mrs Ernie Sterling, Sam (?), Dr Morrisse Jay, Jeannie (Mrs Max Williams). Issac Wolfson makes speech at bride's table, then Charles Wolfson. Massive cake is wheeled over. Newlyweds cut one of the lower tiers of the cake. Shot of guest Max Thorpe. Jane and Jerome have their first dance, later joined by others on the floor. Another guest, Eddy Rain, may also be seen here. Most names spelled phonetically - apologies for any mistakes.
Note: this is an oddity - seems to be special made for the family. Was Wolfson connected to Pathe at this time? Or did he just pay for special newsreel coverage? Any details gratefully received. Reference on paperwork and old database records reads 'PX180'.

Politics of Scotland
Scotland is a country which is part of the United Kingdom. As the UK is de jure a unitary state, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, located at Westminster, London is sovereign over the whole state. However, since the late 1990s, a system of devolution has emerged in the UK, whereby Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have each been granted some measure of self-government whilst remaining within the UK.
Scotland entered into a political union with England in 1707, and since then has sent representatives to the parliament in London, which became the British parliament. Currently, 59 Members of Parliament represent Scottish constituencies at Westminster, and issues such as the constitution, foreign affairs, defence, social security, pensions, issues of medical ethics, and fiscal, economic and monetary policy are decided on at Westminster. In 1999, an 129-member Scottish Parliament was established in Edinburgh, which has full power to make law in Scotland, except in certain reserved matters. In the UK government, Scottish affairs are represented by the Secretary of State for Scotland, currently David Mundell MP, and the Scottish Government is headed by a First Minister, who is the leader of the political party with the most support in the Scottish Parliament, currently Nicola Sturgeon MSP. The head of state in Scotland is the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. As the UK is part of the European Union, Scotland also elects 6 Members to sit in the European Parliament.

Equality Act 2010, Human Rights Act, ECHR and UN
The UK’s commitment to equality and human rights is codified in legislation including the Equality Act 2010, the Human Rights Act, and in our membership of institutions such as the European Convention on Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Conventions.
These Acts and institutions are vital safeguards of equal rights and equalities in our society. The Human Rights Act, for example, has played a key role in ensuring the fair treatment of older women in care home and remedy for inadequate investigation of rape.
The Equality Act includes anti-discrimination measures in employment, including equal pay, and the provision of goods, facilities, and services. There are a number of sections which have not yet been implemented which would bring further progress, such as a requirement for political parties to gather and report diversity statistics.
We are calling collectively for a commitment to:
Maintain the Equality Act 2010 and implement in full as soon as possible, maintain the Human Rights Act 1998, and our membership of the European Convention on Human Rights, Council of Europe and United Nations Human Rights Conventions.

The Caledonian Mercury visits the new Tune Hotel in Edinburgh's Haymarket
There's growing evidence that the downturn in tourism which affected Scotland over the past five years has come to an end. At the low point, existing hotels, especially in rural areas, went bust. Many firms put any plans to expand on hold and the building of new hotels came almost to a stop. But in the past few weeks, the European group, Accor, has announced plans to open three new hotels in Edinburgh and one in London. There's work going on in Princes Street on another hotel at the East End, next to Register House. And the Malaysian company, Tune, has just opened its first hotel in Scotland, opposite Haymarket Station.
Scotland's Tourism Minister, Fergus Ewing, joined the Malaysian High Commissioner in opening this latest hotel from a group that's expanding quickly. It describes itself as a budget hotel with five star quality for people willing to pick and mix the services on offer. A room-only deal for instance starts at just £25 a night -- but everything else from television to wifi is then an added extra. So how will this new offering fit into the highly competitive tourist market in the Capital?

UK’s ambassador to Turkey meets Libyan dissident Belhaj
(10 May 2018) Britain has apologised unreservedly for its role in the capture of a Libyan dissident who was later tortured by the late dictator Moammar Gadhafi's government.
Attorney General Jeremy Wright said Prime Minister Theresa May has written to Abdel Hakim Belhaj and his wife Fatima Boudchar acknowledging that Britain's actions contributed to your detention, rendition and suffering.
Belhaj, a former fighter in the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group that had opposed Gadhafi, and his wife were kidnapped in Thailand in 2004 and sent to Libya.
They say British intelligence provided information that helped the CIA abduct them and have spent years pursuing British officials through UK courts seeking compensation and an apology.
Boudchar was in the public gallery of the House of Commons on Thursday to hear Wright's apology.
