Les travaux de transformation, qui ont débuté en janvier 2010, ont totalisé un investissement de plus de 110 millions de francs, à la charge des CFF. Le bâtiment transformé dispose désormais d’une grande allée lumineuse pour relier les ailes Est et Ouest. Le centre de ventes CFF – 16 guichets et une agence de voyages – y retrouve son emplacement d’avant-travaux, mais dans un espace beaucoup plus vaste. Le personnel CFF de l’Infopoint y donne des renseignements divers à plus de 1200 clients par jour.
De plus, un centre de conférences et de réunions, le «Businesspoint», a ouvert ses portes juste au-dessus des guichets. Il jouxte le Lounge CFF, qui offre 48 places ainsi que cafés et journaux gratuits aux clients de la 1e classe. Avec plus de 30 commerces, la gare propose en outre une très large palette de services à la clientèle. La fréquentation de la gare atteint en effet plus de 115'000 personnes par jour. Outre une gare flambant neuve aux multiples nouveaux services, les clients des CFF profitent désormais aussi du WiFi CFF gratuit. Il suffit aux clients de s’inscrire une fois pour surfer sur ce réseau gratuit, disponible dans une cinquantaine de gares CFF.
L’amélioration des flux de piétons dans la gare a été une priorité du projet. La transformation complète des structures internes du bâtiment a permis de libérer plus de 15% de surface supplémentaire pour les flux de piétons. Les façades historiques, les peintures murales et la grande horloge ont été conservées et restaurées, en accord avec les services de protection du patrimoine.
Le bâtiment de la gare est désormais prêt pour absorber l’augmentation de la clientèle attendue à l’avenir. La ligne Lausanne – Genève, par exemple, va voir sa fréquentation doubler entre 2010 et 2030, passant de 50 000 à 100 000 clients par jour.
Le bâtiment voyageurs terminé, c’est désormais l’accroissement de la capacité de la gare en nombre de trains qui est à l’étude. Les études préliminaires concernant l’extension souterraine de la gare (un quai et deux voies supplémentaires) sont en cours.
