George Square, Glasgow - Scotland Travel Guide
Witness Scotland's history from the buildings and statues at George Square.
George Square is pretty much the historic center of Glasgow. As the main city square, flanked by beautiful buildings, it reflects the story and history of Glasgow and in many ways that is Scotland. Many well known historical personalities of Glasgow have their statues here.
The most prominantly placed on a center collumn is that of Sir Walter Scott, a renowned novelist. Here is James Watt, who invented the steam engine. Poet Robert Burns. Queen Victoria. Interestingly, there is no statue of King George III, for whom this square was established in the late 18th century. When this square was laid out it was actually a grassy area. Only recently has this red surface been placed here.
The Square is surrounded by various, grand buildings. The grandest of them all is this, the City Chambers, the city Counsel Building. Since this is really the center of Glasgow, you will find both locals and tourists here. My favorite thing about George Square is coming to eat on sunny days and sit in the sunshine. Its a good place in the center of town, just to get out and away from it all. And it is also good at Christmas time, coming and watching the ice skaters and things like that.
Football victories are started here. At Christmas the square is magnificently lit and on New Year's Eve or Hogmanay as it is called locally, the square, George Square, is the center of city celebrations. George Square is also an excellent point for you to start your city tour, as there are many information points here. I am Kirsty Macintyre showing you Glasgow.

An activist put up two 'peace' flags in front of the City Chambers in Glasgow, Saturday, to mark the return of stability to the site where clashes broke out Friday evening following the Scottish independence referendum.
Andrew Carnegie, who says he has been told by friends not to go George Square in case he is murdered for his actions, said he was a peaceful man. Andrew, who for the past two decades has ran a 'Glasgow's Needy' food bank charity, was inspired to put up the 'peace' flags following the divisions which have formed between unionists and 'yes' supporters following the Scottish independence referendum Thursday September 18.
The 'peace' flags along with a Scottish flag, were the only ones to be seen on the fences surrounding the WWII memorial in front of Glasgow City Chambers Saturday. On Friday night Union Jack flags were decorating the fences.

Unionists and 'Better Together' supporters gathered on Glasgow's iconic George Square on Friday evening to celebrate the Scottish referendum's result. George Square had been filled with pro-independence activists on Thursday night and was seen as a centre point of the Yes campaign.
Singing 'Rule Britannia', the supporters of the No campaign set off red coloured fire crackers and waved Union Jack flags, with one arguing with a police officer over his right to stay on the square because he had lost two British army soldier friends in the Iraq war.
With tensions high, police kept opposing political forces apart. Chalk messages of 'no surrender' were left in front of the Glasgow City Chambers building by the unionists, a famous protestant phrase from the troubles in Northern Ireland.

On the 19th of September 2014, one day after the no-vote to the Scottish referendum on independence, people gathered at George Square in Glasgow. What has been a very positive atmosphere dominated by yes-supporters the previous days turned into a hostile atmosphere during celebrations of the no-support.

UK: Hundreds rally for Scottish independence on 5th IndyRef anniv. in Glasgow
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Hundreds of Scottish independence supporters gathered in George Square, Glasgow, on Saturday to protest, shortly after the fifth anniversary of the country's 2014 independence referendum that saw voters reject leaving the UK.
People held various flags including those of Scotland and the Catalan independence movement, as well as banners with anti-Boris Johnson comments. Pro-independence bikers also participated in the rally.
I think the union as it stands with what we have when we look at Boris Johnson and the Tory party in power at the moment - what we have with them is just like a bunch of people who are just protecting their own interests, said Wren Chapman, an independence supporter.
The event, reportedly organised by group Hope Over Fear, takes place annually around September 18, the anniversary of the 2014 referendum.

Around 70 police officers were deployed at St Vincent Place, close to George Square, in Glasgow on Friday night to stop Yes campaign supporters from entering.
Earlier, unionists had flooded George Square and the police acted to make sure the two sides did not meet. Singing 'Shove your union up your arse', the Yes supporters were eventually allowed by police to pass by St Vincent Place and on to George Square. They chanted in unison 'George Square!' but were still blocked by police from entering the main area.
As the police had blocked the Yes supporters, it meant a huge traffic jam was caused, with drivers anxious and annoyed by what was taking place close by to them.

Walking in GLASGOW / Scotland (UK) - 4K 60fps (UHD)
Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland. Famous for its Victorian architecture it is a national cultural hub with the Scottish National opera, ballet and an interesting music scene.
We start our walk at the River Clyde near the La Pasionaria sculpture in the southern city centre. From there we walk on Jamaica St towards the inner city and St Enoch Square. A quick detour through the shopping mall there and we continue northwards on the Buchanan St with many shops.
On our walk we also pass the Museums and the George Square with the Glasgow City Chambers. From the merchant city we head back to the centre and enjoy the street that become quieter now at the end of the day.
From the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall we head West and eventually go back South towards the Glasgow Central Station. We end our tour - now after sunset - right where we started - exactly 1 hour ago - at the River Clyde.
