The Walter F. George Lake, named for Walter F. George , a United States Senator from Georgia, is formed on the Chattahoochee River along the state line between Alabama and Georgia. It is also widely known by the name, Lake Eufaula — particularly in Alabama, where the state legislature passed a resolution on June 25, 1963, to give the lake that name. The 46,000-acre lake extends north about 85 miles from the Walter F. George Lock and Dam and has approximately 640 miles of shoreline. Popular activities along the lake include camping and trophy fishing. The lake is primarily controlled by the US Army Corp of Engineers. The states control several other protected lands along the lake, including the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge and Lakepoint State Park in Alabama, and Florence Marina and George T. Bagby state parks in Georgia. The flooding of the land in the area covered numerous historic and prehistoric sites associated with Native American culture. Indigenous peoples had lived along the river for thousands of years. The unincorporated area of Oketeyeconne, Georgia, which historically had a majority of Native American residents, was evacuated in the 1950s to allow creation of the lake.

Fort Hughes (1817), Bainbridge, Georgia

This park in the corner of the city of Bainbridge, Georgia, along the Flint River, commemorates Fort Hughes, that was briefly here in 1817. This was the beginning of the First Seminole War, and some excellent interpretive panels.

In November 1817, American troops from Fort Scott tried to drive away the Seminoles at Fowl Town nearby. The US/Georgia claimed this land from the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814. Seminole Chief Neamathla complained that he was not part of that treaty, nor part of the previous Creek War, and did not want to move.

American troops attached Fowltown, and it can be said that it was unprovoked, and drove away the residents. This was the battle that started 42 years of warfare between the United States and the Seminoles. Two days later, the Army troops returned to burn the village, and the Seminoles were waiting in ambush and retaliated. One soldier was killed, Private Butler Hughes. The soldiers under Lt. Col. Matthew Arbuckle pulled back and built Fort Hughes for protection.

Arbuckle would later be famous for establishing Fort Gibson in Oklahoma (Indian Territory.)

About a month later, Seminoles attached the fort, and the soldiers abandoned the post and went down to Fort Scott.

There are four outstanding interpretive panels here. This makes one of two parks in Georgia that commemorate the First Seminole War, that will soon see its bicentennial. The other place is at Fort Gaines, Georgia, to the west. (But this place has the outstanding interp panels.)

I wish Florida would get serious about commemorating the First Seminole War, because that conflict let to Spain ceding Florida over the the United States with the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819.

In contrast, the most import First Seminole War fort in Florida, Fort St. Marks, known as Fort San Marcos de Apalache State Historic Site, does not even mention the First Seminole War on the brochure and website. They even get it wrong when they say that, Andrew Jackson occupied the fort for a brief period in the early 1800's. US forces were there a year, which I don't think is so brief, is it?

We need more to commemorate the forgotten First Seminole War that was so influential in our country's history and the history of Florida.
