Medieval America - Episode 23: Georgia
In this episode of my Medieval America series we visit two sites in Georgia, in the Atlanta area. The first is called Rhodes Hall and it is owned by the state as a historic monument. The second is called McLaughlin castle and it is privately owned.
About Medieval America the series:
This is a series of videos where you travel along with Will as he journeys all across America in search of medieval things like Castles, Blacksmiths, Meaderies, Museums, Stone Masons and much more. You can see the web version with lots more resources right here:
Why? Because I am going to be building a castle and this trip is partially to do research on how others have done it.

Lecture by Mark Steinmetz
This event was recorded on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in Timken Lecture Hall on the San Francisco campus of California College of the Arts as part of The Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program.
Mark Steinmetz's monochrome portraits are striking both for their understatement and for the way in which they imbue offhand moments with significance.
The photo series that made his name came about in 1996, when Steinmetz, a defiantly local photographer, decided to document the occupants of Jittery Joe's, a coffee shop in his hometown of Athens, Georgia.
Steinmetz's specialty is the hung narrative -- where are these people going? What are they thinking? This is made especially apparent in his images taken by highways. What is the squinting, baggy-eyed, but handsome youth doing on the interstate in Off I-40, Knoxville? He's wearing a dressy, countrified jacket and pencil tie, and looks completely out of place.
Similarly the bespectacled boy blowing bubble-gum, who sits beside the road in Off Highway 441, North of Clayton, Georgia; the road becomes a metaphor for a life journey, destination unknown.
These are the looks of youths the world over. Is it something universal -- a product of adolescence itself? Or something learned from movies, magazines, and musicians? These images won't provide the answers; rather Steinmetz revels in images that stand at the very cusp of a question.
Steinmetz has received a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and a Georgia Council for the Arts Grant, among other awards. His work is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Reader's Digest collection in Pleasantville, New Jersey.
Steinmetz has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Grand Central Terminal, New York; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.
Generous support for the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program is provided by the Pilara Foundation / Pier 24 and Randi & Bob Fisher. Additional support by the Black Dog Private Foundation.
The JFK Assassination Fifty Years Later: What We Know Now

Bill Paul Interview
An interview with Bill Paul, Georgia artist, arts educator, and former Director of the Georgia Museum of Art about his long and varied (and sometimes controversial) career. Conducted in November 2014 by Lee Shearer, reporter from the Athens Banner-Herald. The interview was recorded by Reflecting, Sharing, Learning at the Athens Regional Library System, in connection with the exhibition Seldom Seen: American Art Pottery from the Collection of Bill and Dorothy Paul. This exhibit features a sampling of the Pauls' renowned collection of American art pottery from all over the United States.

Miami artist Leonel Matheu’s design for the Zoo Miami Amphitheater Canopy features cut-out imagery of wildlife and clouds along its perimeter. Talking Pictures with Manjari Sharma and Irina Rozovsky — January 2019
IRINA ROZOVSKY AND MANJARI SHARMA
January 3–February 3, 2019
Artist talk: Saturday, February 2, 3:00 PM
Originally commissioned by curator Mia Fineman for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Talking Pictures is a photographic conversation between Manjari Sharma and Irina Rozovsky. Over a five-month period surrounding the 2017 US election, the two artists exchanged iPhone photos in real time using a call-and-response format. Living different lives in different cities, Sharma and Rozovsky approached the exchange as a form of modern-day letter writing. Their improvisational images reveal personal chronologies that exist within public and private spaces and respond to current political tensions. Most importantly, the dialogue is focused on the creation of new life at such a precarious time, as the artists, both pregnant during this project, conclude the 122 image conversation with the arrival of their newborns.
Irina Rozovsky was born in Moscow and raised in the United States. She is currently based in Athens, Georgia. Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Smith College in Northampton, MA; Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA; Breda International Photo Festival in Breda, The Netherlands; Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, PA; Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, WI; Chelsea Art Museum in New York, NY; Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, FL; and Noorderlicht Festival in Groningen, The Netherlands. Rozovsky participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence Program in August 2012.
Manjari Sharma is an internationally published photo-based artist born and raised in Mumbai, India, and currently residing in southern California. In addition to many private collections, Sharma’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Sharma holds a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication from S.N.D.T University in Mumbai and a BFA in Still Photography from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio.
