Smith River, Montana, Fishing Adventure
The Experience: Leaving civilization behind, this 60-mile Smith River fishing adventure descends a stunning limestone canyon in Montana’s Big Belt Mountains. The Smith is the only river in Montana where all river travelers must have a permit, and for good reason. The scenery, fishing, birding, archeology, geology, and history are arguably some of the best in the lower 48 states. While meandering the curves and eddies of the Smith, we will discuss the adventures of Lewis and Clark’s expedition and the history of the Blackfeet Indians, both of which sought sustenance in the Smith River ecosystem.
Fishing: The Smith River is one of Montana’s premiere rainbow and brown trout fisheries. Its unequaled beauty boasts outstanding trout habitat. For serious Smith River fishing, we recommend the drift boat option – two person maximum in a drift boat. Enjoy the sounds of the river as you fish with our experienced guides. Whenever angling new waters, experienced guides are important, and ours are some of the best in the West. All equipment and tackle is provided for guests.
Wildlife and Bird Watching: Whether you’re an angler or not, this Smith River fishing adventure is the experience of a lifetime! Birders and photographers will be on the figurative edge of the raft, as this area is known for wildlife and fowl watching. We often see mountain lion, black bear, bobcat, wolverine, flying squirrel, otter, beaver, mergansers, osprey, belted kingfishers, dippers, killdeer, American redstarts, yellow warblers, ruffed grouse, hawks, owls, common raven, swifts, hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers, chickadees, Swainson’s thrush, varied thrush … the list goes on and on.
Hiking: We usually arrive at the campsite around 4:00pm each day, so you will have an opportunity to explore around camp or do a short hike while your guides are setting up camp and preparing delicious meals. You can look for wildlife, head up to the canyon rim for a view from above, or explore Native American archeological sites.

Hail Storm Rafting on Flathead River, West Glacier, MT - 6/19/13
This video captures a good portion of a hail storm that struck us on our rafting trip on the Flathead River in West Glacier, MT with the Montana Raft Company. It was filmed with a head-mounted GoPro camera. What started as a sprinkle when we shoved off quickly turned into a steady rain, followed by stinging rain with wind gusts that we estimated to be at least 30 mph, followed by at least 8 minutes of hail -- all within 1 to 1.5 miles into the trip. The hail started pea-size and some pieces were at least nickel size by the end. We were caught completely off guard and for a few minutes were all crouched over covering our head with oars, our hands, or whatever we could find, drifting aimlessly until our guide saw that the hail wasn't letting up and finally found a spot on shore that allowed us to disembark and huddle under a tree. The water temp was ~40 degrees and we later learned the air temp had dropped to ~40 degrees with a wind chill of 35. Our guide (Sarah M) was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our trip down river after the hail passed!

12 Easy Things to do with Family and Kids in Glacier National Park Montana
Glacier National Park: Easy Things to do with Family and Kids
More details in blog post here:
Glacier National Park in Montana is one the most popular things to see in Montana and things to do in Montana and it's especially fun for families who travel with kids.
While most people worry about the weather or where to find accommodations (see the blog post for more info there) this video focuses on what to do on your glacier national park vacation.
First off, glacier park is located in Montana, not Canada as some people think. You can find a map of the park at the gate or the NPS website. The best time to go to glacier national park is...in the morning. Not what you suspected but most people don't get going until after 10 and you will see more wildlife in the early morning and avoid the heat and crowds. The weather in glacier will vary based on season and elevation (see the blog). Glacier park activities range from the jr. ranger program to guided tours and shuttle busses and hikes.
Visiting Glacier national park can be a bucket list summer vacation so make sure you are prepared before you go, and have a great time!
