AMERICA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND |ST. CATALINA ISLAND | AVALON | LONG BEACH TO ENSENADA MEXICO
ST. Catalina Cruise from Long beach Carlifonia to Ensenada, a port city on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum. Most of the island is controlled by the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private nonprofit organization. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. The Conservancy protects the natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres (170 km2) of land (88 percent of the island), 50 mi (80 km) of shoreline, an airport, and more than 200 mi (320 km) of roads. Glass bottom boats tour the reefs and shipwrecks of the area, and scuba diving and snorkeling are popular in the clear water. Lover's Cove, to the east of Avalon, and Descanso Beach, to the west of the Casino, are popular places to dive. At Casino Point is the Avalon Underwater Dive Park, which was the first non-profit underwater park in the United States. Catalina has also been an active port of many cruise lines since the 1990s, with Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Lines making the port a regular for Baja cruises.

Here is a video of me feeding frozen peas to some senioritas, sheephead, kelp bass and garibaldi. From out of no where, or what seemed like no where, a huge male sheephead scared the crap out of me. He had some pretty big teeth. Once I got used to him, he was alright. He did follow us around looking for more peas.

Camille and James explore the anchorage of Little Harbor on Catalina Island
Season 4 | Episode 60 | Exploring Little Harbor on Catalina Island
Hello Friends!
Coming in after dark we looked over the charts and sounded our way into 30ft of water and dropped the hook.
Sailing into an anchorage after dark is not advised but sometimes it is necessary and you just have to deal with it. We had both paper charts and digital charts and could see land masses for points of reference so we new we were anchored in a safe spot. Sailors have been anchoring in the dark for centuries but I feel the need to include this in the description because someone insulted me and questioned by seamanship because we anchored after dark, and its more than likely that that person as only ever gone day sailing and doesn't understand that when you are cruising sometimes you have to deal with situations that are not ideal, which is what we did, and we did it perfectly.
While the location we ended up anchoring in was safe it was not at all comfortable. We spent a very rolly night with a heavy swell rolling in but our anchor alarm never sounded and the hook held fast.
Upon first light and after a cup of coffee I hauled up the hook and we moved in closer to shore and behind the natural breakwater that makes Little Harbor such a wonderful anchorage. Finally dropping the hook with 9 ft of water under our keel.
This clear skies and a warm sun I took Camille out for her first ever snorkeling. As we both floated next to the boat Camille put her face in the water and pulled it right out and said there are two massive rays below us! The snorkeling was truly incredible and we got to see our first ever Shovel nosed guitar fish who circled back to give us a look.
After a full day of snorkeling and swimming we went ashore in search of Bison. Legend has it that a herd of Bison were brought to Catalina in the 1920s for a movie shoot and have remained there ever since.
We quickly found a pair and watched these mellow creatures for awhile.
Little Harbor ended up being the most amazing anchorage of the trip and editing this video for you all has made us want to go back RIGHT NOW!
Thanks to our Patrons, Your contributions help us get the boat in order to do big things!
Until Next Week,
James & Camille & SV Triteia
