Glen Davis, New South Wales - Historic Shale Oil Town

Glen Davis is an old shale-mining town on the Capertee River, 35 km east of Capertee on the eastern rim of the Capertee Valley (The widest valley in the world and larger than the Grand Canyon in the United States)
The first mining tunnel, established in 1881, later became the basis of the major mining enterprise which opened in 1938. A town of some 2500 people developed around the mine, which was named Glen Davis after the Davis Gelatine interests who headed the mining consortium.
The operation closed down in 1952 due to high costs and the increasingly small output, leaving what remains today – crumbling furnace ruins, retorts and collapsed shafts covered in vegetation and surrounded by steep sandstone cliffs and a profuse array of bird & wild life.

Glen Davis, Ruins & Camping - Coorongooba campground - Happy Go Travel
A quick look at the remains of Glen Davis NSW Australia, a fly over of the industrial shale oil ruins of the old and a look at Coorongooba campground.
When you drive into Glen Davis it’s like steeping back in time. There a few old folk still keeping the town alive. But it’s mainly rundown and abandon. In town there is the Glen Davis camp ground where there is flush toilets and shower (at a cost). The whole place is in a valley and has a awesome secluded feel to it.
The old shale ruins are fenced and locked of to the public for the most part. I believe there are tours on a certain day at a certain time for $15 each (information is only hear say). The look out over near Coorongooba campground looks over the top and has some Ruins of its own to explore up on the hill. It is well worth the 600m stroll.
Coorongooba campground, is where we stayed. Right on the Capertee River and at the bottom of the valley surrounded by huge rock walls it is an absolutely magic place to camp.
If you haven’t, Glen Davis is definitely worth checking out.

We kicked around at the Glen Davis ( NW of Lithgow ) Oil Shale Mine for a few days where oil shale was mined here from 1938 until finally closing in 1952. Massive amounts of the shale was extracted from the ground and refined into oil. At the time of production the town was alive with thousands of people, dance halls, 2 schools, pubs and shops. There were areas for single men camps, a shanty tent town and houses for those who were married.
Producing 500 000 gallons of oil for Australia’s yearly usage of 3 million it was a major player. The oil was then carted by rail 36 miles away and stored in massive tanks - then shipped by rail in to Sydney.
BUT, during the WWII this seemed a major risk to our security ( in case it was bombed and blown up - hence the gun bunkers at Lithgow in case we came under attack ), - subsidies were halted by the government at the time and the refinery was shut.
These days you can camp nearby and explore parts of the ruins outside the refinery ( tours are run each Saturday ). We were amazed at the huge ash dumps around the area and the amount of steel implements in the bush. Apparently when the liquidators came in they had a huge task of offloading the estimated 4,000,000 pounds ( not dollars !! ) of gear to reap some money back.

A family long weekend out Camping at Coorongooba Camp Ground in the Capertee Valley (the widest Canyon in the work) close to Glen Davis and a day trip to Cole Rebau and the Tramway track up to the Airly Gap with a little bit of mild 4w driving but some beautiful Scenery and old mining artifacts and buildings.

Exploring Sunny Corner & Glen Davis - NSW
Day 1: We enjoyed catching up with friends in Sunny Corner. Tried our hand at metal detecting and explored some tracks in the warmth of the FJ ... it snowed, a very exciting experience ... yes the mud was fun too.
Day 2: We went out to Glen Davis, lovely scenery here. Found the Shale Oil Works Ruins and enjoyed exploring. For lunch we headed out to the Coorongooba campground ... spectacular ... we're definitely coming back to camp here. Lots of kangaroos, big open areas, easy walks and the Capertee River, if you fancy a swim :-)

September 2016. I have now put up a 1080HD version of this film giving better clarity and quality to the restored Super8 film.
This version is a Standard Definition restored Super 8mm film from 1980, presented in widescreen for the first time and has not been seen in nearly 30 years.
Newnes was a mining town, where Torbanite, a sort of oil shale rock was mined and eventually processed into a good range of oil products. Newness is located in the beautiful and scenic Wolgan Valley, north of Lithgow, Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia.
It operated between 1906 and 1932 when it closed down and operations were moved elsewhere.
Eventually everything was sold off and removed. When the formation of the Wollemi National Park in 1978 was ordained, it included the Newness area.
This film shows a group of people from a social club at the time from the Sutherland area on a day trip to check out the site and visit the former train tunnels that were now glow worm tunnels.
The film, originally silent, has had a new soundtrack constructed and was an interesting challenge in itself. It seems to do the job ok.

The Commonwealth Oil Corporation commenced shale mining in the early 1900's. A private railway some 35 miles was constructed through the Wolgan Valley. It was considered a world class engineering achievement at the time. There were 4 standard gauge

Nice little day trip out to Coorongooba Campgrounds in Glen Davis on Saturday. What a rippa of a spot !
Fire pits ... new drop toilets ... beautiful big flat grass areas and then to cool off in the heat of our 39+ summers, the Capertee River ( although it had dried down to a little creek ) that flows right up through the beautiful Capertee Valley.
This is the 2nd largest canyon in the world to the Grand Canyon. Capertee is actually 1km wider than the Grand Canyon but not as long.
Absolutely beautiful spot up here folks so if you can get up here for a camp, treat yourself, you won't regret it.
I think you may have to pay ( there was a money box there but no receipt books or tickets etc ) to stay here but it is worth it. We're going to camp up here in the next month or so.

The Wolgan Valley is formed by the Wolgan River in rugged mountainous country west of Sydney and north of the city of Lithgow. It flows broadly east until it joins the Capertee River, after which it becomes the Colo River. The latter then continues east through rugged wilderness country. The Wolgan Valley includes sections of the Wollemi National Park and the Gardens of Stone National Park.
The valley was inhabited by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years, but the First European settlement occurred around 1823, when James Walker used the valley as an outstation from his Wallerawang settlement. It is best known for its historic railway tunnel and the former Commonwealth Oil Corporation shale oil mining operations at Newnes.
The Railway tunnel formed part of a 50km long heavy haul line between Newnes and Newnes junction on the main western railway. 4 heavy Shay type locomotives were used to haul the products of the works at Newnes up grades as steep as 1 in 25.
The name of the Wolgan Valley is derived from wolga, a local Australian Aboriginal language name for the climbing plant, Clematis aristata, found in coastal regions of the South-East states of Australia.
Within the Wolgan Valley there are several significant Aboriginal sites. These include Blackfellows Hand which is a collection of Aboriginal hand stencils located near Wolgan Gap, and several Aboriginal burial sites.
The bush walking trails in the area include the Pipeline Pass, which goes from Newnes to Glen Davis,[2] and the Wolgan Valley Heritage Trail (see links below), as well as the track from Newnes to the Glowworm Tunnel. There are also camping grounds that are open to the public. The valley also contains numerous slot canyons and is popular for rockclimbing.
Commercial tourism came to the valley in 2009 in the form of the Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa. This project was opened by Emirates Hotels and Resorts after examining several sites in Australia.[3]

Newnes October Long Weekend 2014
A weekend that was too good not to share. Perfect weather in an absolutely beautiful part of the country, Newnes. We had an action packed time beginning with a trip down Starlight Canyon to see the thousands of glow worms in the pitch black tunnel. This was a full day trip with plenty of abseils and spectacular scenery along the pipeline track passing over the range. The following day found us rockclimbing the Coke Oven crag just above the industrial ruins of the abandoned oil shale refinery at Newnes, once a town with over 2,500 people. Next day was a 4wd adventure to the Glow Worm tunnel on the Newnes Plateau via Blackfellows Hand Trail. We had some fun with some Landrovers on the way. We returned back to camp and enjoyed an evening in front of the fire with marshmallows and hot chocolate in our picture perfect campsite. Next morning we headed up out of Wolgan Valley over the gap and headed North West along The Bicentenial National Trail finding our way through The Gardens of Stone National Park and into The Capertee Valley. After some careful 4wd negotiation down a steep rock ledge being careful not to let the car get away from us and hit a tree head on we had lunch at Baal Bone Gap before making our way to Glen Davis to view more ruins from the shale mining days. The return trip was just as exciting where we found ourselves on the wrong side of the Coxs River which needed to be crossed in order to get back to camp (the short way). It was quite deep and came up to the top of the bonnet and without a second vehicle or a winch there was a few nervous moments during the crossing. After our final nights sleep surrounded by large numbers of wombats, possums, frogs, kangaroos and thousands of birds we packed up and sadly said goodbye to our piece of paradise. On the return trip home we stopped off at Katoomba for some great wood fired pizza at the railway hotel before taking a visit to The Three Sisters. Then it was off to Wentworth Falls where we made our way down the stairs cut into the side of the cliff on the National Pass walking track, after which it was a very steep climb back up. Apparently Avira got tired doing it. So that is a brief summary of our October Long Weekend 2014, hope you enjoy it and be rest assured that we will be going back to Newnes in the not too distant future. Hope to see you there!
