Globen City, Stockholm, Sweden: Sports And Commerce In Perfect Harmony
Globen City in Joanneshov, south of Stockholm, is not an ordinary urban centre in a our view. Unlike many cities in the world where sports arenas are often located in peripheral areas as solitary urban structures amidst expanse of concrete parking areas, in Globen City, sports and leisure facilities are mixed harmoniously with commercial uses to generate an exciting and vibrant urban environment. We will elaborate as thus.
In Globen City, two huge sports stadiums namely Tele2 Arena and Ericsson Globe Arena, as well as two medium size concert arenas namely Annexet and Hovet, exist in perfect harmony with shopping outlets, offices, restaurants, pharmacies, cafes, and pubs, among other commercial uses. The mixed uses are spatially linked to adjacent metro and tram stations by a pedestrian overpass alias Globenbron over Arenavägen. Other entrances to the core of the urban centre are provided from Arenavägen by Tele2 Arena, pedestrian overpass and underpass, over and under Nynäsvägen respectively, as well as pedestrian underpasses under Arenavägen and Enskedevägen.
More specifically, the urban design of the urban centre is organized around four squares, namely Svene Berkas Square alias Svene Berkas torg, Arena Square alias Arenatorget, Globen Square alias Globentorget, and Entré Square alias Entrétorget. Linking the squares are two malls that provide linkage and access to main entrances of the sports/leisure arenas and commercial outlets.
The first mall spans from the metro station to Entré Square and beyond, while the second stretches from Arena Square to Hovet Arena. The two malls intersect at Globen Square. Connecting Arena Square and Svene Berkas Square are pedestrian/cyclist ways around Tele2 Arena. The malls are well furnished with smooth paved floors, seating places, landscaping trees, flower beds, rubbish bins, lamp post and lamps, advertising boards, etc. Further to providing linkage and access to the sports/leisure arenas and commercial outlets, the malls offer great venues for various social activities including strolling, talking, sitting, reading, talking, children playing, passing through, etc.
This is a photo video of Globen City. The video is based on photos taken by ourselves in the middle of 2018, and organized such that it generates an observer visual experience/sequence of the urban centre. We begin the visual experience at Globenbro by the metro station and down to Arenavägen below. We proceed along Arenavägen towards Tele2 Arena and enter the urban centre through one of its main entrances by Tele2 Arena. We then continue to Arena Square before proceeding towards Globen Square and Hovet via one of the two malls. From Hovet we turn back to Globen Square, take at glimpse towards Entré Square before heading back to the metro station.
Take a look at the video now and get inspired if you are an urban designer or just a city enthusiast!
