Amazing Going-to-the-Sun Road (Short Version) – Glacier National Park, Montana MT.
Ride with us (from a driver’s point of view) as we travel up the west side of Glacier National Park towards Logan Pass and the continental divide. Going-to-the-Sun road is an engineering masterpiece and is considered to be one of the most scenic highways in the world.
Glacier National Park was originally designed to be seen by horseback. A road into the center of the park was requested once automobiles became popular with tourists. Men labored 20 years building this marvelous roadway designed to blend with Glacier’s magnificent landscape.
Going-to-the-Sun road was dedicated in 1933. Stunning vistas await you as you travel the 50 mile scenic highway. It was the first national park road designed to complement scenic wonders. Logan Pass sits on the continental divide at 6,646 feet above sea level.
This is the first road to be designated a National Historic Landmark and is a National Civil Engineering Landmark. The road is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
This sequence was captured with a GoPro Hero 3 camera and edited with Adobe Premier Pro.

AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage – only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

Going To The Sun Road - Glacier National Park, Montana, USA
Glacier National Park Montana Going To The Sun Road
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another adventure. We are Glacier National Park in Montana this week, exploring the Going To The Sun Road. It is the first time in the park for each of us, and we are gob-smacked with the grandeur and beauty! The first part of the day started off cloudy, but it only enhanced some of the park's scenery. It felt like we were way high in the heavens with the jutting peaks and crawling clouds. When we stopped at the tunnel, April spoke with a young couple about what the must-do hike is, and they both said Avalanche Lake at the same time. Shortly before we got near the trail-head, we met painters Karen Robinson and her husband. They were setting up their canvases, so we told them we would stop back by after our hike to see how their paintings were coming along. (One tip I didn't include on film is to arrive at the trail-heads early, as parking is limited and fills up fast.) We started off on the Trail Of The Cedars, which is handicapped accessible. [This is what the website says about obtaining a disabled pass: A free, lifetime pass - available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability) - that provides admittance to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by five Federal agencies.] The Avalanche Lake hike was mostly right along Avalanche Falls, whose water color was a light glacier blue--it was amazing! Upon arriving at the lake, we were astounded at the surroundings. It was surreal. We decided to walk along the lake's edge to take it all in some more. You must get out there and see it for yourself; it is incredible!! After our hike, we stopped back by to see the painters. What talent they have! And Karen even had to make the best of an accidental mistake she made...that's the way to approach life. We ended up at Apgar at the edge of Lake McDonald for a picnic dinner of grilled hamburgers. That's where April spotted the horse in the water. We'd never seen such a thing in person before! It was so magical to watch. Finally, we arrived at the Brownies Hostel in East Glacier. The things we liked most about our time there was watching the sun set on their balcony and waking up to the smell (and April had a taste, of course) of the bakery downstairs making cinnamon rolls. This was definitely one of the best journeys we'd ever been on!

Going To The Sun Road - Hiking with Mountain Goats - Glacier National Park, Logan Pass - Montana
After setting into our St.Mary's/East Glacier KOA campground, we head into Glacier National Park for a day of exploring. We take the shuttle up the Going to the Sun road. It was an easy, quick way to avoid the hassle of parking. Once at the highest point, Logan Pass, we hop out and take a hike to Hidden Lake. This beautiful lake is nestled in the mountains and we were in awe of the wildflowers, mountain streams, and wildlife we saw. We lost count of the number of mountain goats we passed!

Top Things to See at Glacier National Park | 10K-mile Road Trip Vlog 47
Here are the top 5 things to do and see in Glacier National Park, Montana, from driving along the Going-to-the-Sun Road to the best hikes and seeing waterfalls and wildlife along the way. See below for more details:
1. Going-to-the-Sun Road
This is a 50-mile road that crosses the park and has epic views almost the entire way. It takes the term scenic highway to a level you never thought possible. Lots of turnoffs along the way to stop for pictures. The road is covered in snow and impassible for most of the year. It is usually only open from late June/early July through mid-October. Check the National Park Service page for exact open and close dates:
Even if you don't have time to do any hikes, just driving along this road is worth the trip. We cannot get over how pretty the scenery is.
2. Hike the Highline Trail (at Logan Pass)
The Highline Trail is the most scenic and breathtakingly beautiful trail I've ever been on. The views over the valley below are incredible. The flowers are colorful and gorgeous. And since you start at Logan Pass with an elevation of over 6600 feet, you don't have to do any work to get the amazing views. You may have to get over your fear of heights, but it's totally worth it. DON'T RUN and DON'T WALK BACKWARDS on this trail - two things I did and I can attest that neither one is smart.
3. Hike Hidden Lake (at Logan Pass)
Hidden Lake is a short hike (1.3 miles) from the visitor center at Logan Pass. It's completely exposed to the sun the entire time. It's always busy. Always. You will see mountain goats on this trail. They're everywhere.
4. Sun Point at Saint Mary Lake
About 15 minutes past Logan Pass is Sun Point. There's a large parking lot right there so it's only a 0.1 mile hike out to the point and it's so pretty. You can see so many mountains and you have such a great view over the lake in all directions.
5. McDonald Falls and Lake McDonald
On the north side of Lake McDonald, turn on North Lake McDonald Road and drive for about 2 minutes to the small parking area on your right. You'll see a trailhead for McDonald Creek. That will take you to the waterfall. Look for deer along this trail (we saw two). You can follow the trail out to Lake McDonald too.

U Shaped Valley In Glacier National Park In Montana United States
Glacier National Park is a national park located in the U.S. state of Montana, on the Canada–United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1 million acres (4,000 km2) and includes parts of two mountain ranges (sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains), over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles (41,000 km2).[3]
The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Under pressure the Blackfoot ceded the mountainous parts of their treaty lands in 1895 to the federal government; it later became part of the park. Soon after the establishment of the park on May 11, 1910, a number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. These historic hotels and chalets are listed as National Historic Landmarks and a total of 350 locations are on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1932 work was completed on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, later designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, which provided greater accessibility for automobiles into the heart of the park.

The famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, Glacier National Park Montana USA
Glacier National Park and Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park, Glacier National Park is an American national park located in northwestern Montana, on the Canada–United States border, adjacent to the Canadian provinces, More than 700 miles of trails in a vast park with diverse landscapes & abundant wildlife.
2012 - Glacier National Park, Montana, USA
As part of my 9-week road trip back home, I passed through Glacier National Park located in the state of Montana. I drove across the popular Going to the Sun Road that takes you through the heart of the park. During the time that I visited the park, there were many forest fires within the state and adjacent states - you will notice the poor air quality in this video as a result. Nevertheless, I managed to complete two small hikes that took me up to two lakes. I only spent one full day driving through this park and didn't have the chance to explore the park to its fullest. Perhaps in the future I will re-visit it and explore more of its back country.
