SCUBA Diving - Beach Dive off Hollywood Beach Florida
While SCUBA diving in places like the Keys, Bahamas or Cayman Islands are much more scenic and colorful, one advantage of living the past 30+ years in South Florida is the ability to beach dive whenever you have some spare time.
In much of the United States, there is really not much to see underwater within swimming distance of the shoreline.
But in South Florida (starting approximately at the West Palm Beach and southward region), you can strap on your tanks and gear, swim out about 500 yards with a dive flag in tow and drop down to 20-25 feet and spend 90 minutes underwater enjoying the northern-most edges of the tropical reefs that become larger and more scenic as you head into the true tropics of the Caribbean.
So while it may not be as grand and colorful and a full blown dive vacation to the islands, it is nearby and cheap.
At a moments notice, you can throw your tanks and gear in the car -- drive 30 minutes to the beach -- and be exploring the reefs within the hour.
Figure $4 for an air fill and $6 for a slice of pizza and soda when you get back on land and it makes for a great inexpensive way to spend the day for $10.
This video shows what lies underwater just a few hundred yards offshore at Hollywood Beach Florida.
This beach is pretty much equidistant between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach along the East Coast.
A much quieter and less populated beach area as the video reveals (although sadly, signs of urban sprawl are getting closer each year)
Enjoy.

22-year-old Jessica Vaughn was bitten by a bull shark while swimming in the Intracoastal Waterway near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday.
Vaughn had to overcome her fears to join friends on the tubing / swimming excursion. I've always had feelings of something down under there, she said, because of the dark murky waters.
Her friends entered the water 30 minutes prior to Vaughn getting in. She was in the water for only about 30 seconds before the shark chomped into her leg. The shark then lifted its tail out of the water and smacked Vaughn in the face
She was helped out of the water by her friends who then applied pressure to the crescent shaped wound. A nearby resident called 911 when she overheard screams coming from the dock. Emergency personnel picked her up and rushed her into surgery.
Fort Lauderdale's Fire Rescue posted gruesome pictures of the aftermath to their Twitter account.
Authorities credit her friends' fast actions for saving Vaughn's life. She is expected to be released from the hospital within a few days.
Vaughn does not have health insurance but a Go Fund Me account has been set up to help raise money to cover her medical expenses.

Welcome back to fish island media,
While down in #Florida, I wanted to try to do some #underwater footage with the new #goPro.
So we took a trip out of Pompano Beach inlet to visit the wreck of the Tracy and do some scuba diving.
On our first dive, we dove the wreck of the Tracy. The ship was sunk in about 80 feet of water as part of Pompano Beach's artificial reef program.
The current was pretty rough, and made both the dive and the boat ride out a little hectic. But at fish island media, we're not scared of some wild weather.
It was a pretty awesome wreck dive with lots of cool stuff to see!
Stay tuned for more vacation videos, and hopefully more scuba videos!

Mystery Road Evening Dive in Hollywood FL (06/15/2010) (HD 720p 16:9) - Gold Coast Scuba Divers
Legend has it that the structure on the ocean floor leading due east from Hollywood Beach was originally a road to Bimini build by the ancient Atlantans. Each year, on the Ides of June, the road guided travelers gathered from the sea to a place of worship now buried beneath the parking lot between Michigan and Johnson Streets (it is rumored that is why no business has ever prospered on that land).
Join us on June 15 as the sun goes down for an evening to night dive on this mysterious site. Three Gold Coast divers reported strange events there at the stroke of midnight New Year's Eve. Now, on the Eve of the Summer Soltice, we'll see what we can discover. Bring one primary light, a backup light, and a glow stick or other illuminated personal marker. Waterproof paranormal detectors are optional.
This is a wonderful dive to just relax and enjoy the sights. It is an easy swim of 100 yards off the shore (little more than 25 yds beyond the sandbar) and parking can be as close as the Broadwalk next to the beach. Freshwater showers rinse you and your gear prior to grabbing a bite at a beachfront café after the dive.
We'll meet, gear up, and walk into the surf by 7:30pm. There is plenty of light to see at that time and you can adjust to the darkness slowly as the sun sets. This is a great dive to learn night diving skills. Water is only 19 to 26 feet deep. The structure is always full of fish, day and night, including hogfish, giant puffers, angels, grouper, and lobster. Nurse sharks are rare visitors, but large rays, tarpon, and amber jack cruise through occasionally. (HD)

Blacktip Shark spotted during Key Largo, FL Dive
We spotted this shark near Elbow Reef, Key Largo, Florida on 03NOV2019. I think that it was a Blacktip Shark, but I'm not sure. The water was murky, and he was moving pretty fast, so it is not the best footage. I had a hard time keeping up with him, but I did manage to get some decent footage once I employed the zoom function on my camera.

Beware These Worst Beaches for Shark Attacks!
Shark attacks seem to be on the rise in many parts of the world, therefore, you might want to steer clear of the following known shark-infested waters. Statistically, these are among the most dangerous beaches for deadly shark attacks.
1. Pernambuco, Brazil
The shockingly high attack rate in these waters appears to be due to over-fishing. Without enough food supply, the sharks have begun to sample other forms of fare to satisfy their relentless hunger.
2. Second Beach, South Africa
The beach is popular among shark-seeking tourists and cage divers. Tour operators dump boatloads of bloody chum in the water order to entice the great whites. You definitely don’t want to surf or swim anywhere near these boats and their chum lines.
3. New Smyrna Beach, Florida
More than 238 shark attacks have been documented at Florida’s (surprisingly) popular New Smyrna Beach. In fact, 15% of worldwide shark bites have occurred here. Most of the bites are courtesy of baby bull sharks that favor these waters. To date, none of the recorded attacks here have been fatal.
4. Velzyland Beach, Hawaii
About 41 different shark species that frequent Hawaii’s waters including aggressive specimens like bull sharks and great whites. The last fatal shark attack at this beach occurred in 1994 when a tiger shark attacked a surfer. More recent attacks on surfers have been reported, but none fatal.
5. New South Wales, Australia
This region, which includes famous Bondi Beach, has recorded more than 170 unprovoked shark attacks and more than 50 fatal attacks, and great white shark encounters are more common here than in other parts of the world. Due to the position of the continental shelf, swimmers and surfers are in close proximity of deep waters where these potential predators cruise.
6. Fletcher Cove, California
Fletcher Cove may be picturesque, but it is also the scene of 142 unprovoked shark attacks, including some recent fatalities. Scientists are convinced that the fish-strewn waters in this region are ideal feeding grounds for large predators like the great white.
7. Reunion Island, Indian Ocean
This island has had more than 10 attacks in a recent two-year period, three being fatal. This has prompted island officials to close the beaches to swimmers and surfers. Experts aren’t sure why the sharks are biting people with greater frequency.
8. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Since 2005, there have been more than fifty attacks. In fact, researchers have claimed that South Carolina’s waters are just as dangerous as Florida’s when comparing the swimmer-to-attack ratio. Their waters are attractive to species like tiger sharks and bull sharks.
9. Coffin Bay, Australia
The name says it all. Don’t swim here unless you fancy a meeting with a great white. Recently an abalone diver was attacked and killed by two great white sharks. His body was never recovered.
10. Surf Beach, California
A nineteen-year-old surfer was attacked and killed a few years ago by a great white shark believed to be 18 feet in length. The waters here are home to seals, which attract great whites in large numbers.

The United Caribbean is better known to the public as the Golden Venture. At 2am on June 6, 1993 the 147-foot steel cargo ship ran aground 300 yards off Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York. Aboard the vessel captained by Amil Humuntal Lumban Tobing and 10 crew members were 286 undocumented Chinese immigrants (262 men, 24 women) who’s goals were to be smuggled into the United States. Many of the immigrants panicked when the Golden Venture hit the sandbar and jumped into the frigid 53-degree water. Between the temperature, the current and not knowing how to swim, 10 immigrants drowned. The 4.5 month voyage costed each immigrant between $25,000 – $35,000.
The Coast Guard inspected the single diesel engine vessel and reported that the 286 immigrants lived in horrid, un-livable conditions.
The Golden Venture was seized and renamed the United Caribbean After the 1993 tragedy.
The United Caribbean Wreck:
Palm Beach County paid $60,000 for the United Caribbean to be part of its artificial reef program. On August 22, 2000 the United Caribbean took a 23-minute journey to its final resting place 76 feet under water. The cargo ship landed upright about a mile off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida.
Now broken into three sections due to the 2004-2005 hurricanes, the United Caribbean Wreck is a popular South Florida dive spot. Knowing its history prior to exploring it will you make you asking yourself, “How did nearly 300 people live in here for months?!?! when you penetrate the United Caribbean Wreck.
