The Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar - Kwa Bahal) explores the unique and historical vihar (Buddhist monastery) which is situated north of Patan Durabar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Hiranya Barna Mahavihar is one of the 18 main Bahals of Patan. The Sanskrit name of the Bahal is given as “Bhaskerdev Samskarit Hiranyabarna Mahavihar”. The name of the Bahal was given according to the saying that there was a mouse named Hiranyak with eyes sparkling like diamond. This Bahal is located in Kwalkhu Tole, north-west of Mangalbazaar. Built outside the boundary of the palace of Kirat King Patuk this was called Kwathalakhu Bihar. Later it was called Kwatha Bihar then Kwa Bahal. Nowadays the Bahal is popular by the name of the Golden Temple. The Bihar is said to have been constructed by Bhaskerdev of Medieval Era. This Bahal is famous for the Golden Temple inside the Bahal and has been identified as one of the religious centers of the valley. This Bihar is very well known from the name of “The Golden Temple” all over the world and many tourists come to visit this Bihar. There is always a huge gathering of devotees in the month of Shrawan for various Pujass. People come here to fast as well as request for the reading of the Pragyaparmita.
Pragyaparmita of the Golden Temple: Hiranyabarna Mahavihar is not only a religious area but this is the place where religious book (Granthas) of Buddhism is recited. This Bihar is famous for one of the main nine Granthas “Pragyaparmita”. This Grantha was written by a monk named Ananda in B.S. 1282 during the reign of King Abhaya Malla. This Astasahashrika Pragyaparmita is written in golden letters. People believe that this Grantha was kept in this Bihar to protect from evil nature of people. People from various regions come to read this book. From B.S. 1995 this Grantha was kept safe in a box. A separate Guthi has been established for the reading of this religious book. The local people believe that if they ask to carry out the reading of this book once, their every desire will be fulfilled. Nowadays people have to register their names months before for the reading of this book.

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar or Golden temple .This unique Buddhist monastery is just north of Durbar Sq. It was allegedly founded in the 12th century, and it has existed in its current form since 1409. The temple gets its name from the gilded metal plates that cover most of its frontage and it is one of the most beautiful in Patan.

Entry is via an ornate narrow stone doorway to the east, or a wooden doorway to the west from one of the interlinked courtyards on the north side of Nakabhil.
Entering from the east, note the gaudy lions and the 1886 signature of Krishnabir, the master stonemason who sculpted the fine doorway with its frieze of Buddhist deities. This second doorway leads to the main courtyard of the Golden Temple; shoes and leather articles must be removed to enter the lower courtyard. The main priest of the temple is a young boy under the age of 12, who serves for 30 days before handing the job over to another young boy.
The temple itself is a magnificent example of courtyard temple architecture. Two elephant statues guard the doorway and the facade is covered by a host of gleaming Buddhist figures. Inside the main shrine is a beautiful statue of Sakyamuni (no photos allowed). To the left of the courtyard is a statue of Green Tara and in the right corner is a statue of the Bodhisattva Vajrasattva wearing an impressive silver-and-gold cape. Both are inside inner shrines.
Facing the main temple is a smaller shrine containing a ‘self-arisen’ (swayambhu) chaitya. The four corners of the courtyard have statues of four Lokeshvaras (incarnations of Avalokiteshvara) and four monkeys, which hold out jackfruits as an offering. A stairway leads to an upper-floor chapel dedicated to a white eight-armed Avalokiteshvara, lined with Tibetan-style frescoes including a wheel of life. Finally, as you leave the temple at the eastern exit, look up to see an embossed mandala mounted on the ceiling. Outside of winter, look for the tortoises pottering around the compound – these are the temple guardians.
It’s worth ducking south towards Durbar Sq to see the small, two-tiered Uma Maheshwar Temple and the handsome stone Gauri Shankar Temple, in the Indian shikhara style. Across the road, the Buddhist Maru Mandapa Mahavihar is set in a small courtyard. Temple is only a five-minute walk from Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur. Yet many people in the immediate neighborhood and Kathmandu don’t know about it. Though named Golden Temple, it is actually a Buddhist monastery with gilded metal plates covering most of its frontage. The monastery has a ticketing service of fifty rupees for foreigners. When asked what about the Golden Temple appeals to them, a foreign couple said, “We are fascinated by the architecture of this closed courtyard Buddhist monastery which is unique. The carvings have a lot of detail. And, it is so peaceful.”
This three-roof monastery was built in the 12th Century by King Bhaskar Verma and is adorned with a golden facade, four large gateways, a clock tower, and two lion sculptures. The main priest here is only twelve years old, replaced after a month of service. The place is a serene getaway from the hustle and bustle of the busy Patan alleys. It is clean with seating spaces to relax and to forget about your worries for a bit while marveling over the temple’s deep cultural significance and intricate architecture.
The secretary of Golden Temple, who had also served his term as a principal priest, Lok Nath Shakya sheds light on the history and uniqueness of the place. Hiranya Varna Mahavihar’s name hiranya, which means mouse, comes from the myth of a golden mouse that chased cats. Its entrance doorway has two wooden struts carved with two important Hindu gods, Shiva and Vishnu who safeguard the place. And, the entrance door of the temple when closed pictures a carved Bhairab that is believed to safeguard people from any bad happenings.
The second door has carvings of Buddha depicting the path of practicing paramita to achieve Bodhisattva. Shakya says that the first step begins by loving others. The third door has a carved statue of the God of three yans – Śrāvakayāna, Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna, and it leads to the main courtyard. The main courtyard is the place where all the ceremonial worships take place. The wings lead to gumbas and rooms for conducting ritual feasts. The gumbas includes a wheel of life, giving off a very ‘Doctor Strange’ effect.
The principal priest of Shakya descent should be under twelve years old. Shakya says that male children of such age are deemed suitable as the Panchasheel is maintained at that age – a child doesn’t kill, tell lies, steals, has corrupt thoughts, and drinks or smokes. You will most often find the priest dressed like a ‘Bhikchhu’ and using his phone while basking in the sun when not wrapped up in his religious duties.
