Catalina Island Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares her Catalina Island Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

This is from my last visit to Catalina Island on a Carnival Cruise. My suggestion is to do a little shopping in the square then rent a golf cart and tour the island. I was surprised how high up a mountain you can get in a golf cart!

Vacationing on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Long Beach, CA. Rented a golf cart (cars are uncommon on the island) and I remembered my new HTC Incredible handset, so I did like any self respecting geek and took some video.

Catalina, is a rocky island off the coast of the U.S. state of California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. The island is 22 miles (35 km) long and 8 miles (13 km) across at its greatest width. The island is located about 22 miles (35 km) south-southwest of Los Angeles, California. The highest point on the island is 2,097 feet (639 m) Mt. Orizaba. Santa Catalina is part of the Channel Islands of California archipelago and lies within Los Angeles County.
Prior to the modern era, the island was inhabited by people of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe, who, having had villages near present-day San Pedro and Playa del Rey, regularly traveled back and forth to Catalina for trade. The Tongva called the island Pimu or Pimugna and referred to themselves as the Pimugnans or Pimuvit. Archeological evidence shows Pimugnan settlement beginning in 7000 BC. The Pimugnans had settlements all over the island at one time or another, with their biggest villages being at the Isthmus and at present-day Avalon, Shark/Little Harbor, and Emerald Bay. The Pimugnans were renowned for their mining, working and trade of soapstone which was found in great quantities and varieties on the island. This material was in great demand and was traded along the California coast.
Since Catalina Island was never connected to mainland California, it was originally lacking in all terrestrial life. Any plants or animals that arrived on the island had to make their way across miles of open ocean. The original species to come to the island arrived by chance by blowing over on the wind, drifting or swimming over the ocean, or flown over by wing. Starting with the Native Americans and continuing today, animals and plants have also been introduced by humans, both intentionally or accidentally.
Catalina is home to at least fifty endemic species that occur naturally on the island and nowhere else in the world. This limited distribution of a species may result from the extinction of the original population on the mainland combined with its continued survival on the island where there may be fewer threats to its continued existence.
The island is also home to a number of non-native animals, notably including the American bison.

Southern Lifestyle Assisted Living Facility Tour
Southern Lifestyle is an assisted living facility located in scenic Lake Placid, Florida. Centrally located from anywhere in the state, Southern Lifestyle dispels the myth that you have to separate beauty and fine architecture from quality health care when serving the needs of the elderly. It is over fourty thousand square feet, and contains a grand foyer, single- and double-occupancy suites, a huge dining and recreation room, hair salon, chapel, etc. There is even a miniature golf course, shuffleboard court and lawn bowling right there on the grounds! This facility also features a special wing called Memory Lane for residents with Alzheimers. This wing features advertisements and movie memorabilia from the 1930's and 40's on the walls that serve as memory-building items for the residents. Outside Memory Lane is a sidewalk maze garden that also helps the memory of the Alzheimer residents.
You have to see the facility to believe it! It reminds one of a four-star hotel, rather than a medical facility. Southern charm and hospitality meets high-tech, compassionate care. That's Southern Lifestyle in Lake Placid, Florida. Call Chuck Oakes, Donna Pontius or Bea Cooper at 863-465-0568 if you want to schedule a personalized tour.
