Washington State: North Cascades National Park, Part I
North Cascades is a little visited National Park northeast of Seattle and bordering Canada. It is bisected by the State Route 20, the drive through it being one of the most scenic drives in the State. Enterint into the park through the west there are beautiful views of the mountains and the Skagit river. A stop can be made at Newhalem at the Trail of Cedars- This short trail goes paralell to the Skagit river through a forest of big and old cedars. The road continues to Gorge Dam with a view of the lake of the same name. Near the road there are the Gorge Creek falls

Waterfall in the Sky, North Cascades National Park
This cascade is so high up that one does not notice it unless one looks up to gaze at the snow peak. One of many unnamed cascades in North Cascade National Park in Washington State, this is one of my favorites. I saw it when I first visited in 2011, very glad that found it again in 2013! So very pretty!
Still pics are here
Location : This one is also along Washington State Route 20 along Skagit River, near Newhalem, WA; in Whatcom County. On eastbound State Route 20, it is exactly 1.4 miles BEFORE Mile Marker 177. There are a few roadside paved but unmarked parking areas next to the road where this Cascade is located, pay attention, you will find this Waterfall!
Enjoy!

Gorge Creek Overlook, by Newhalem WA, music by Sam Donahue
This is a short tour of the Gorge Overlook area on Highway 20 just past Newhalem, proceeding East. There is a large parking area next to the roadway, with the bathroom positioned in the middle. Beside the bathroom is the beginning of the trail to the Gorge Dam overlook. It's a great trail, but a very poor overlook. Your best view is just prior to when the trail turns dirt, and there are several cutoff paths which are dirt leading toward the canyon edge. Directly past the parking lot is the bridge, with walkways on either side. Once past this, heading east, in another few miles there is another overlook (Diablo) where the final three pictures of this video were taken. The music: Sam Donahue (leading the U.S. Navy Liberation Forces Orchestra) in 1945 with Convoy. This is a highly savy arrangement done by Donahue (note the use of the trumpets during the trumpet solo--this is startling stuff!). This was one hell of a kick ass group, featuring a lot of top sidemen: Johnny Best, Conrad Gozzo (trp), Tak Takvorian (bone), David Rose (arranger). Anyway, this group also played in England prior to D-Day, and reportedly scared the crap out of Miller. When Navy Liberation outfit arrived back in the states Goodman was to buy the whole band out intact, but he had to put his career on hold due to medical issues, and the orchestra disbanded. This was one of the very finest big bands to come along (leave it to Sam Donahue--the meek do inherit the earth), and is always a huge pleasure to listen to.

Backpacking through the cascades in Washington state
Part 1 of our recent backpacking trip.
North Cascades, Lavenworth HW #2 & Lake Chelan in Washington State
We were driving from Bothell to Lake Chelan which is a distance of 175 miles on a 2 day trip. Since the route is mountainous and curvy it took more time to maneuver the hills while enjoying the most beautiful place on earth. The entire route is picturesque and we stopped at many places on the way. We stopped at Deception Falls, Lake Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Peshastin, Wenatchee and River Columbia. We also stopped at Chelan County hydroelectric dam and inside the dam we saw Salmon traveling upstream. Lake Chelan is a natural lake formed by glacier water. The water in the lake is pristine and clear. I enjoyed in the water swimming for some time. On the way we stayed in Holiday Inn near Wenatchee. The way is full of fruit plantation like apples and varieties of pears. We stopped to buy pears. We drove all in our black pagoda.
