Gorham's Cave Complex - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Gorham's Cave Complex is a series of caves underneath the famous Rock of Gibraltar. The discoveries made here in these caves have hugely changed our understanding of Neanderthals and their way of life. This process is still ongoing, as it's an active archaeological excavation and unfortunately the general public aren't allowed in. But here's the next best thing!

General Manager, Marc Skvorc experiences UNESCO World Heritage Site Gorham's Cave
Welcome to Adventures with Marc. It is with great pleasure that we introduce this section of our blog with none other than Sunborn Gibraltar's very own General Manager, Marc Skvorc.
After having arrived to Gibraltar a little over a year ago, Marc has explored the Rock visiting many sites and experienced many of Gibraltar's beautiful features. However, one landmark which always wanted to experience were the recently awarded Gorham's Cave which recently became part of the UNESCO family after the complex was awarded World Heritage Site status in July 2016.
Watch our first episode of Adventures with Marc and see what Marc had to say about this experience.
Sunborn Gibraltar would like to personally thank the Gibraltar Museum especially Stewart Finlayson & Marisa Bossino for the wonderful opportunity to experience this fascinating landmark in Gibraltar. keep up the great work!

Gorham's Cave complex of outstanding universal value says Government
Gibraltar’s World Heritage Caves have immense archaeological and touristic value, and the Government is prepared to take full advantage of that. However, it will respect the caves’ integrity, and not expose them to the kind of tourism which will endanger their conservation. The Acting Chief Minister, Joseph Garcia, this morning paid his first visit to the caves since they were awarded their new status by UNESCO.

Neanderthal connections: international research collaboration on the Gorham’s Cave Complex
Gorham’s Cave Complex was inscribed as an ‘exceptional testimony to the occupation, cultural traditions and material culture of Neanderthal and early modern human populations’. The best part of three decades of international research collaboration and publication supported the nomination for World Heritage Site status. The Complex has contributed substantially to the debates about Neanderthal and human evolution, providing unique insights into the lifestyle, behaviour and cognitive capacity of our ancestors. The scientific potential of the caves continues to be explored by a diverse team from many countries. Work is guided by a research and conservation strategy and five-year action plan which balance research with the conservation of the fragile attributes of Outstanding Universal Value. Peer scrutiny by an international research and conservation committee provides independent evaluation of the success of the strategy.
The research is the kingpin of the whole project, and the need to support it is a central tenet of the vision for the World Heritage Site. Partnership agreements and networks have been developed, but it is equally important that the local community is involved and supports the work. Hence much effort is put into making the site and the results of the expert research accessible through a wide range of media.

Interview with Professor Clive Finlayson on Gorham's Cave and the UNESCO World Heritage bid
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee meets in July this year in Istanbul where the ‘Gibraltar Neanderthal Caves’ nomination is expected to be discussed. Referring to Gorham’s cave and Vanguard’s Cave, which are based near Europa point, both are filled with archeological treasures, such as a Neanderthal tool that was recently uncovered.
Professor Clive Finlayson, who is leading the UNESCO bid, spoke to Katy Docker about the history of the caves and what his hopes are for the area going forwards.
