The Gornergrat, at 10,290 feet, is remarkable for the fact that there's an unbroken range of magnificent snow peaks on every side. There's not a single break in the chain. It's an isolated rocky peak that enables one to survey at leisure the marvelous scenes all around.
In the video we show tips on how to get the most out of your visit, including a delightful easy hiking trail on the lower flank for a nice walk back into Zermatt.
The Gornergrat also boasts the highest shopping mall in Europe. And they've got the highest hotel in the Alps. The outdoor cafe terrace is an ideal spot to sit back, have a beverage and enjoy the view of Europe's tallest mountain, Mont Blanc, right in front of you.

An amazing scenic trainride through the snow by cogwheel train in Switzerland from the car free ski village Zermatt to mount Gornergrat. From the Gornergrat there is an spectaculair view over the swiss alps upon mount Matterhorn and the Monta Rosa Massif and the Gorner Glacier. The Matterhorn is also famous because of the TOBLERONE chocolate candybar with the drawing of the mountain Matterhorn in its logo. The narrow gauge rack railway tracks of the Gornergratbahn (The Matterhorn Railway) are aroud 9 kilometres long and from Zermatt you’ll pass the stations Findelbach, Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Rotenboden before it will arrive on Gornergrat at 3089m. The Glacier Express can bring you from Chur, Disentis, Andermatt, Brig and Visp to Zermatt in Canton Valais.

Dit hele gebied heeft ook prachtige skipistes. Gornergrat in Zermatt, Switzerland
The Gornergrat rack railway should be one of your top priorities in Zermatt, to ride up the mountain for stunning look at 29 snow-covered Alpine peaks reaching above 12,000 feet, displaying one of the most amazing mountain panoramas in all the Alps. This is the very center of the Alpine range. We are going to have some great views of Monte Rosa and other mountains in the surrounding vista.
This railway is the second highest mountain-railway in Europe, with the highest outdoor train station (10,137feet). Starting in the village opposite the main train station, the line rises with a maximum gradient of 1 in 5 along the slope of the valley and offers good views of the Z’mutt Valley and the Matterhorn. At 2 1/2 miles the station of Riffelalp (7,305 feet) is reached, then the second station is at Riffelberg (8,480 feet). The line then passes above the Gorner Glacier, and reaches the terminus at Gornergrat.
Here you have what is said to be the finest Alpine view in Europe. You are standing on a central peak of rock in a surrounding world of ice and snow as far as you can see.
You have to walk up this final couple of hundred yards to get to the very top observation platform and from there you get this stunning panorama. So don't stop just at the top of the train station or at the restaurant or at the Café Terrace. You want to get to the top, the very top. It's easy to get there and you will be rewarded with this unbelievable Vista. From this spot you can see more high peaks than any other place in the Alps. This is the place the Gornergrat and especially with the Matterhorn. So we're quite happy to be up here.
Gornergrat (10,290 feet) is remarkable from the fact that there is an unbroken range of magnificent snow peaks on every side. There is not a single break in the chain. It is an isolated, rocky peak, that seems formed by nature to enable one to survey at leisure the marvellous scenes around. The huge Gorner Glacier winds round its base at a dizzy depth below ; beyond are the snows of that glorious range beginning with Monte Rosa (which seems within a stone’s throw) and ending with the Matterhorn. Then the central range of the Pennine Alps, with the stupendous summits of the Dent Blanche, the Gabelhorn, the Rothhorn, and the Weisshorn, all linked together in one vast chain of snow and ice. Next, far away beyond the Rhone Valley, some distant peaks of the Bernese Oberland ; and again to the right the group ten more peaks completing the circle around you.Between these mighty peaks lie innumerable glaciers, notably the vast sea of ice formed of the Gorner, the Theodule, and the Furggen glaciers, which lies like a map below ; its moraines, its snow slopes, and its countless crevasses revealed at a single glance.
After soaking up the views, head down to the mountain-top building complex, which includes a hotel and shops, and warm-up in the café – it is not that cold, it's just barely freezing and sunny, there's no wind, really ideal conditions. You can sit outdoors at the terrace cafe if you like or sit indoors in the cafeteria. Most people like to sit outside on the terrace. You can see the Matterhorn in the background, and Monte Rosa, Switzerland's highest mountain. The restaurant offers a convenient cafeteria line where they serve up some hot meals, soups, salads and light snacks.

The most photographed mountain in the world—image of the Toblerone—is best viewed from the top of the Gornergrat. It is reached via the Gornergratbahn, a scenic cogwheel train that summits the adjacent Gornergrat mountain from where a viewing platform was built. Zermatt was reached from Geneva via Visp on the Swiss railway system. Then, next to the Zermatt station, the Gronergrat train can be boarded to reach the stellarium, the best viewing point of the Matterhorn.

Gornergrat (3,089 m) offers a spectacular mountain panorama, surrounded by 29 peaks rising to above 4,000 m and second longest glacier in the Alps.
The Gornergrat can be reached by the Gornergratbahn rack railway from Zermatt, a 29 minute ride to the Gornergrat peak, via Riffelalp, Rotenboden and Riffelberg, (with limited stops at Findelbach and Landtunnel just above the town).
The Gornergratbahn was the first electrical cog railway in Switzerland (1898) and is the highest open-air cog railway in Europe (3,089 m).
At the summit there is a hotel, restaurant and (small) shopping center. It is a popular skiing area. The Matterhorn is visible on a clear day.
The towers of the Kulmhotel hosts the Kölner Observatorium für SubMillimeter Astronomie KOSMA.
The Gornergrat is a ridge of the Pennine Alps, overlooking the Gorner Glacier to the south (the second longest glacier in the Alps).

Der Gornergrat ist ein Berggrat auf einer Höhe von 3135 m ü. M. Er befindet sich rund drei Kilometer östlich von Zermatt im Schweizer Kanton Wallis. Der Gornergrat befindet sich zwischen dem Gornergletscher und dem Findelgletscher und bietet eine Sicht auf mehr als 20 Viertausender, darunter den Monte Rosa, das Matterhorn und den Liskamm.
Er stellt die Endstation der 1898 eröffneten Gornergratbahn dar, die über Riffelalp und Riffelberg führt und dabei eine Höhendifferenz von fast 1500 Metern überwindet. An der Endstation (3089 m ü. M.) auf der südwestlichen Spitze des Grates befindet sich ein Berghotel.

Gornergrat hike down to Zermatt Switzerland
Heading back down the Gornergrat by train, but instead of riding all the way down this rack railroad we decide to walk part of the way down. And it's a nice easy hike down. We're going to take a stroll downhill, and downhill, and downhill, it's all downhill. Some Swiss people love to hike uphill. They feel it's better exercise, but for us going downhill is just the ticket. You kind of get into the groove and enjoy the scenery, especially with the Matterhorn off there in the distance. And you can kind of float down when you get into the flow of the right speed and the right angle with your feet, or so it would seem. We made it. Well not quite yet, we're not all the way down yet, we thought we were but looking at the signpost, okay, we have a little bit further to go. Some more downhill legs, passing a new house. They build the new ones in the old style using the local materials. There's lots of lumber here, lots of trees growing all around, and they harvest these trees very carefully while preserving the forest.

Skiing from Gornergrat to Zermatt
Our first attempt at skiing from the top of one of the Zermatt ski areas down to the bottom. It involved getting a lift at one point, because we actually had to go back up the hill a little to get onto the next run.
Numerous little stops, waiting for 'er indoors to catch up, or to loosen/tighten my murderously uncomfortable boots.
