Japanese Flea Market
Visited the Japanese Flea Market at Fairmount Park near Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. Didn't shop at the market much, but the rest of the park was so beautiful and colorful. I saw some wooden sandals and harassed a bug with a GoPro.

We left Seoul early Friday morning and spent three full days wandering Osaka. Sorry we didn't see more sites outside of the Dotonburi area but because it was 'golden week' in Japan everything was super crowded. We opted for a chill wandering sort of holiday instead :)

Goryosai procession with Mikoshi 2016 in Kyoto, Japan
The Goryosai procession of May 18th 2016 in Kyoto. It's probably the biggest procession with Mikoshi (portable mini shrine) through Kyoto. Three Mikoshi are carried through Kyoto on this occasion!
The procession starts at the (Kami-) Goryo shrine and ends there as well. It goes from early noon to late evening and goes through the former imperial palace, Imedagawa street and Kawaramachi street.

Japanese Shinto Shrine in Kyoto/Shimogoryo Shrine
【Shimogoryo Shrine】
Shimogoryo Shrine originated when eight divine spirits including the Emperor Sudo (the imperial prince Sawara) were deified at Izumoji area (north part of Kyoto Imperial Palace). They all had died in unfortunate circumstances, and in those days it was wildely believed that natural disasters and epidemics were caused by revengeful spirits of those people. Rites called Goryoe were often held in order to calm such spirits.
It is believed that this shrine was named Shimogoryo Shrine because it was at first located to the south of the Goryo Shrine(Shimo means south in Kyoto).
Afterwards, the shrine frequently changed its location, and was transferred to its present position in 1590 following the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. From old times, it has been worshipped as the tutelary deity of the Imperial Palace of Kyoto.
The main temple was constructed in 1791 through the relocation of the naishi-dokoro (a building where the mirror of a god is set in place) of the temporary imperial palace. And it is said that the front gate was moved from the former Kenreimon gate in the palace.

Japanese Shinto Shrine in Kyoto/Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine
【Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine】
Kamigoryo-Jinja Shrine deifies thirteen divine spririts including the Emperor Sudo (the imperial prince Sawara). In this place there used to be a temple called Kami- Izumodera, which was originally established as a family temple for people in the neighborhood. It is believed that on the occasion of the transfer of the capital to Kyoto in 794, eight people who had died in unfortunate circumstances during that period were deified in th form of divine spirits as the guardian deities of the new capital following a direct request by the Emperor Kammu. Thereafter, five enshrined deities have been added, due to the wish of the Emperor Meiji.
In the Heian Period (794-1192), it was widely believed that natural disasters and epidemics were caused by revengeful spirits, and rites for the spirits of the dead were often held in order to calm such spirits. This shrine became famous as the shrine for ceremonies to drive away such spirits. The shrine gained favor from the royal court as well as from the ordinary people, and was especially worshipped by the Imperial family as the guardian deity of the Imperial Palace. This explains why there are a lot of items offered by the Imperial Family still kept here, including portable shrines and ox carts.
The battle that occurred in this area on Janiary 18, 1467 was the beginning of the Onin War, a great civil war that lasted for ten years and reduced Kyoto to ashes.
