France Travel Guide - French Village of Gourdon
Take a tour of French Village of Gourdon in Gourdon, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The sheer, forested cliffs of Provence, France give way to the sky-high village of Gourdon.
Also called the Eagle's Nest, Gourdon sits 500 meters above the river Loup and gives sprawling views of rolling hills and the Mediterranean Sea.
The town has gained a reputation for its incredible vistas and its visitor friendly atmosphere.
The beautiful medieval Town Hall, decorated with a small but stately French insignia, is a testament to the steadfast nature of this ancient town.
The small medieval streets contain many beautiful architectural treasures.
To catch a glimpse of this town, travel north from Nice or watch Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief.

From the A8 motorway take the Cagnes sur Mer, exit on the RD 2085, then the D3. 31 km from Cannes and 14 km from Grasse.
Gourdon village. Just getting to Gourdon is an adventure in itself.
Take the road through the vertiginous Gorges du Loup, with 700 m high cliffs towering above you, and take the time to stop at the Saut du Loup waterfall for a refreshing breather in the summer. Then you'll passing through the hamlet of Pont du Loup, with its climate ideal for growing orange trees, olive trees and perfume plants, which is part of the Gourdon municipality.
From there you might choose to walk up to Gourdon, taking the old Chemin du Paradis which used to be a mule track. Beware, it's a climb of more than 500 metres, but at the end of the road is paradise!
Alternatively the less energetic visitor may prefer to stay in their car and simply drive up to one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France... which certainly also attracts more visitors than most villages on the Riviera.
Gourdon is the archetype of a perched village, sitting like an eagle's nest at the end of a rocky spur, enjoying a truly exceptional panoramic view over more than 80 kilometres of coastline from Theoule sur mer and Nice.
It also forms a remarkably harmonious ensemble of white stone-built medieval houses, nestling around the feudal castle, all of which are beautifully restored and maintained.
Without a doubt, Gourdon has been the fortunate recipient of attentions from all the good fairies of Creation! The good fairies of commerce have been at work too, to judge by the number of craft shops that await the tourists: perfumes and soaps, honey, nougat, gingerbread, craft glassware and painting on silk, etc !
But the highlight of your visit to Gourdon will be castle. Originally owned by the Counts of Provence until the 13th century, the castle was then passed on to the Grasse-Bar, the Villeneuve-Flayosc and the Borriglione families in succession, almost all of whom where great noble families. Traces of each are still to be seen in this wonderfully preserved building.
You'll admire its imposing round and square towers, its arrow slits and Renaissance entrance gate, its cobbled inner courtyard and well, its gargoyles and vaulted hallways, not forgetting its monumental 14th century fireplace.
Inside, you can visit superb gardens laid out by Le Nôtre, Versailles' landscape gardener. The gardensare a true Eden, with their main terraces shaded by centuries' old limetrees. You will admire an Italian style garden and rock garden, as well as the apothecary's garden with its intermingling fragrances of angelicas, columbine, balsam and comfrey, lemon balm, old mints and roses, sage and tansy … medicinal plants used in the Middle Ages.
After this wonderful journey into the past, you'll enjoy a return to reality, having lunch on the terrace with a breath-taking view of the entire Riviera. Then you'll understand why Gourdon is one of the villages that attracts the most visitors on the whole of the Riviera!

A falu megőrizte autentikus báját, mely hagyományos provence-i kőházainak, 12. századi román stílusú templomának, várának és várfalának, a Napkirály kertésze által tervezett parkjainak, keskeny kis utcáinak és a helyi művésznek, galériáknak, butikoknak, kézműveseknek köszönhető.

Medieval Villages in the South of France
Gourdon, Alpes – Maritimes France
The road to Gourdon is lined with orange and olive trees and winds through the Gorges du Loup which leads to the stone medieval houses and the feudal castle with the surrounding gardens.
“Gourdon is an ancient perched village, and it is really perched. It sits on the edge of a rocky spur that juts out about 500m directly above the Loup river where the Gorges du Loup comes out at the Pont-du-Loup village. (The population, by the way, includes the people living in Pont-du-Loup, 360 m straight down below Gourdon.) There are some great views of Gourdon, and a few other lovely sites of the French Riviera, in Hitchcock's 1955 To Catch a Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.”
Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Alpes-Maritimes
This medieval fortified village is famous for its museums, galleries and boutiques. It has been frequented through the centuries by actors, poets, artists and musicians because if its beautiful squares, ancient fountains, cobblestone streets and picturesque sweeping views. Marc Chagall is buried here.
The village is one of the most intact medieval fortified villages in Provence with much of the ramparts or defensive walls still in place.
Built on a rocky outcrop this is one of the most beautiful villages in the south of France.
“12 km west of Nice and the airport. 16 km from Antibes. 26 km from Cannes.
Built on its rocky outcrop and surrounded by its ramparts built on the orders of Francois 1st, St Paul is certainly one of the most beautiful villages in Provence.
The beauty of the surrounding area, quality of life and exceptional light has inspired numerous famous artists, painters, writers and poets, some of whom took up residence in the village.
You can find signatures from some of these famous artists at the Fondation Maeght which has a large collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and other graphic works from the XXth century.
Walk around the narrow and so picturesque streets of the village, from the Porte Royale to the Porte Sud via the (pedestrianised) and you will discover magnificent stone facades from the XVIth and XVIIIth centuries.
Lose yourself in the maze of charming streets, the floral exuberance of the gardens, the little shady squares, ancient fountains, gateways and porches, or wonderful windows and you'll see why St Paul is a favourite subject for photographers.
Visit some of the artists' and craft workshops or museums or go shopping in the provencal boutiques (often full of visitors in summer).
From the ramparts, wonderful views over the surrounding hills, the Cote d'Azur and of course the sea. No need to repeat that the landscapes are magnificent... “
Tourrettes-sur-Loup , Alpes-Maritimes
This medieval village is known at the “Violet village” growing here for over a century and it honored each year in March at the flower festival . Here artisanal shops run by the artists themselves weaving, painting, pottery, jewelry and sculpture.
“16km North west of Cagnes sur Mer via Vence.
14 km from the coast, between Nice and Cannes, Tourrettes sur Loup is a charming medieval village which is really worth a detour.
Perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by superb landscapes where prickly pears grow naturally, the village of Tourrettes sur Loup seems to conquer all beneath it with its tall houses built along its ramparts.
It's not called Violet villagefor nothing because for over a century this shy pretty flower has been grown in the village.
Even today it's one of the main activities in the village. The flower is honored each year in March with a flower festival, decorated floats and a flower battle.
The best way to discover Tourrettes sur Loup is by calmly wandering around its pretty, narrow streets, its vaulted passage-ways taking in the tastefully restored stone facades, and climbing some of the stepped passages, bordered with pretty flower baskets...
In the Grand' Rue, the heart of the historic center of the village, more than 30 artists' workshops, galleries and crafts workshops galleries come together.”

A városka a dél-francia Provance – Alpes – Cote -D'Azur régióban, Nizza felett található, 760 m magasban. A térség egyik leglátványosabb hegyi faluja.
