The last governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten has left his colonial-style mansion for good.
Patten bade his 250 staff an emotional farewell and left the house carrying the Union flag which had been flown from its roof.
The staff of Government House who have taken care of Governor Chris Patten for the last five years gathered to bid him farewell on Monday afternoon.
The Pattens have lived in the house for almost five years, with their youngest daughter and two dogs.
Their other two daughters have visited for holidays and have spent the last few days celebrating the final days of British rule in Hong Kong with their parents.
Governor Patten bowed his head during the British National Anthem - a gesture made because he does not wear a hat.
Many of the 250 staff members looked on the verge of tears as Patten said a personal goodbye to each one.
A drill by a band of Honour Guards, Cordon guards as well as musicians from the Royal Hong Kong police was specially designed for the event.
In a final symbolic ritual the Governor's standard was lowered from the portico of Government House and presented to him as a memento.
During this part of the ceremony, Patten's favourite tune ' Highland Cathedral' was played.
Patten's daughters left Government House in a Daimler, while the Governor and his wife waved from a Rolls Royce.
After boarding his Rolls Royce the governor drove three times around the circular driveway - a Chinese tradition meaning he will return.
Between now and the official handover at midnight Hong Kong time (1600 G-M-T) Governor Patten will attend various ceremonies.
There have been rumours that China plans to turn Government House into a museum.

Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.

Just looking at these tiny shoebox apartments in Hong Kong will make you claustrophobic
Hong Kong has a problem. With its population growing steadily, it doesn't have enough space to house the 7.2 million people in its 426 square miles.
But where the government sees a major issue, realtors see dollars. Because of demand, they can charge high rents for tiny spaces, charging up to HK$90, or $11.60 USD, per square foot.
And the spaces are getting smaller. People are living in apartments stacked with wooden boxes, known as coffin houses, and sleeping in cages about the size of rabbit hutches.
The photos of these spaces are extreme and expose the harsh realities of a city with the highest levels of inequality in the developed world.

Kung fu legend Bruce Lee's old home in Hong Kong's Kowloon Tong has been demolished to make way for a Chinese studies centre.
Developers said they discovered structural problems in the building that made maintaining it unfeasible.
The Yu Pang-lin Charitable Trust, which owns the building, said a mosaic left by Bruce Lee would be retained on a wall outside the mansion, and that four window frames from the two-storey building will be preserved.

China says violent protests in Hong Kong are 'undisguised challenge', reports state TV
China regards the violent actions of some protesters in Hong Kong as an 'undisguised challenge' to the 'one country, two systems' formula under which the city is ruled, state television reported on Tuesday. A representative of China's Hong Kong affairs office condemned the violence of some protesters, who are angered by a proposed extradition bill, and said Beijing supported the Hong Kong government in holding violent criminals responsible, the report said

Hong Kong: Hunger strikers march to Government House, demand to meet Lam

A group of Hong Kong anti-extradition bill activists, who entered their 12th day of hunger strike, marched to Government House, the office of Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Monday, demanding to speak with the leader.
Footage shows the hunger strikers and other activists marching from Admiralty Centre, where they have been staying, to Government House.
It is not just those who are more progressive or those who are young who are concerned about the extradition bill, said Legislative Council Member Dr. Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung. This is really an outcry from all walks of life and we wish them to completely withdraw the bill and, also, meet the demands of the public including establishing an independent inquiry to investigate the whole saga.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in the streets of Hong Kong in recent weeks in one of the largest demonstrations in the city’s history, against an extradition bill which would allow people to be extradited to the mainland to face trial.
Although the bill has since been suspended, the protests have continued with protesters calling for it to be withdrawn entirely and for Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam to resign.
