Chicago Fireman John Dickey Graceland Cemetery Monument
We begin our look at Chicago's Graceland Cemetery with this somewhat obscure monument to firefighter John Dickey. There is a lot of Chicago history at this burial ground which is the final resting place for many of it's early leading citizens. It is a beautiful spot well worth visiting. Located about a half mile north of Wrigley Field home of the Chicago Cubs
On October 18, 1857 John B. Dickey died in a fire that ultimately led to the creation of the Chicago Fire Department. He was the foreman of a group of firefighters known as the Liberty Hose Company, and he was killed trying to put out a huge fire near the corner of Clark and Lake Streets. In all 23 firemen and citizens perished in this blaze the cause of the fire was reported this way in a local paper.
It is in sad, but too painfully strong evidence, that the fire, which originated in the five-story building, Nos. 109 and 111 South Water street, was caused by carelessness and drunken recklessness of the participants in a drunken debauch of clerks and the abandoned females they had made their companions and associates in a Sabbath night's revel.
Chicago's mayor at the time was “Long John” Wentworth took the politically unpopular position that the city needed a professional fire department. His point of view won the day and less than a year later on August 2 1858 the Chicago Fire Department was born.

Ernst Lehmann Mausoleum At Forest Lawn Cemetery Forest Park Il.
The first in a series of videos we will be uploading taken at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Forest Park, Il. The land was originally a burial grounds for the Pottawatomie native American tribe. The land was purchased by Ferdinand Haase one of Forest Park's original settlers although at the time the town was known as Harlem. In the 1870's Chicago closed the cemetery that was located where Lincoln Park now stands and passed a law stopping the opening of any new burial grounds. So Haase sold some of his vast land holdings to some German Masonic lodges, which created German Waldheim Cemetery in 1873. It was started as a non denominational burial grounds open to all. I
This video features a huge unmarked abandoned mausoleum at one time it held the remains of Ernst J. Lehmann and five other members of his family. They were moved in 1920 to Graceland Cemetery in Chicago where they now reside on their own island. Mr. Lehman was a late 19th century retailing magnate founder of The Fair Store one of the cities first department stores. It's flagship store was at the corner of State & Adams and by the early 20th century employed over 5,000 workers.

Bachelor’s Grove: most haunted cemetery in illinois: the joker voice impression (Heath Ledger)
Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in chicago is the most haunted graveyard in America. narrated by the joker box. most haunted places in illinois. chicago haunted cemetery. bachelor's grove close to chicago.
Established in 1840, the small area surrounding bachelor's grove cemetery was soon abandoned by the English homesteaders who relocated from Chicago to New England, leaving the graves behind. Originally named the Everdon Cemetery, the property title belonged to Samuel Everdon, and though there are 82 plots many of them were left unused. During the 20s and 30s Bachelor's Grove was rumored to have been the infamous dumping ground for Chicago's organized crime families. It was the isolated lagoon near the back of the abandoned cemetery that supposedly drew the mobs attention. According to the legends it soon became the perfect place to fit hitmen, snitches, and people who owed money with a pair of permanent concrete shoes. Bachelor's Grove is most famous for the ghost stories that surround the strange plot of land at the end of the long gravel road. One of the most famous images of a supposed ghost was captured at the graveyard. The White Lady or Madonna of Bachelor's Grove is rumored to be the spirit of a woman who was buried next to her child. Often times she's seen wandering the cemetery during the full moon, holding the body of a baby in her arms.
