Interpreting Juke Joints and African American Nightspots on the Mississippi Blues Trail
Interpreting Juke Joints and African American Nightspots on the Mississippi Blues Trail by Scott Barretta
Initiated in 2006, the Mississippi Blues Trail consists of 189 interpretive markers that address important musicians, places and themes in the musical history of the state. Unlike conventional metal markers, the Blues Trail markers feature a vinyl panel on one side with multiple images and over five hundred words of text, allowing considerable interpretive possibilities.
The Trail serves two main purposes—historical documentation and advancement of cultural tourism, goals that might potentially be in conflict. For instance, will bringing more “outsiders” to local watering holes drive away the regulars and thus the “local color” that attracts outsiders to begin with? Alternatively, in the context of a relatively dramatic decline in juke joints with live music over the last decades can we see publicity associated with the Trail as leading to the survival—albeit in an altered form—of the juke?
These questions will be examined via examples of markers placed at longstanding venues including the Blue Front Café in Bentonia, the Queen of Hearts in Jackson, Po’ Monkeys in Merigold, Red’s Lounge in Clarksdale, and the Club Ebony in Indianola.
Another topic to be addressed is how the Blues Trail has acknowledged the spots of defunct, but once vital, venues including Ruby’s Night Spot in Leland, the Harlem Inn in Winstonville, and the Club Desire in Canton. Once central to local African American communities, these venues were previously only alluded to briefly in blues scholarship and largely ignored by local historians or tourism officials.
Need to Know | April 27, 2017 | Remembering the only U.S. refugee center for Holocaust victims
It’s been said that history has a way of repeating itself. The global refugee crisis of more than 65 million displaced people draws a correlation to one of the darkest times in human history. Today the world is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II.
As some nations open their borders to refugees escaping conflicts in their homelands, closer to home we remember our past when nearly a thousand refugees from Europe arrived in Oswego, New York in 1944.
The Holocaust refugees were brought to the US as guests of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. They were a “token” group intended to be part of a larger plan to bring possibly hundreds of thousands of holocaust victims to what was called “safe havens” around the country.
That first group, more than 900 people, interned at the Fort Ontario army camp was also the last group offered a safe haven.
That story was documented 30 years ago in a Peabody award-winning WXXI production called Safe Haven. On this special edition of Need to Know we celebrate the anniversary of that film at a relevant time in modern history. Guests joining this show include: Paul Lewis - writer and producer of the 1987 documentary, Irving Schild – a Holocaust survivor and Safe Haven refugee in Oswego, and Helen Levinson – a Holocaust survivor from Poland who moved to Rochester after World War II.
On the Road in Southern Vermont: Overview | Connecting Point | Nov. 2, 2016
Travel along the Molly Stark Byway, the corridor that runs along Route 9 from Bennington, VT to Brattleboro, VT. This area is beloved by those who love outdoor recreation, and is a popular spot for “leaf-peeping” during the fall.
There is, however, a lot more to this region than maple syrup and fall foliage. A region with great history, southern Vermont has hosted revolutionary war battles, enjoyed economic boom times during the industrial revolution, and is now looking for its place in the 21st century.
Connecting Point executive producer Tony Dunne and videographer Mark Langevin bring us an overview of the people and issues that drive the rural communities and urban centers which make up this picturesque region, to find out what life is like in this part of the Green Mountain state.
Smithsonian Food History Weekend 2017: After Hours
On October 28, 2017 the National Museum of American History hosted a conversation with four brewers who bring unique stories of movement and migration – through personal experience or inspiration – to their beer. How have these histories influenced the beers they brew? How do the brewers define the role of beer in American society, past, present, and future? How can their journeys expand our understanding of American history?
This event is part of the Museum’s Brewing History Initiative.

The video conferencing session between the two schools was conducted between students of Gyan Mandir Public School (Delhi, India) and Adamjee Model School (Karachi, Pakistan). The session was coordinated by Ms Anju Anand and Ms Devika Mittal from Indian side and Mr Usama Palla and Ms Suraya Islam from Pakistan. We're grateful they let us drop by!
The British tasked Cyril Radcliffe with the job of drawing a line to separate Punjab and Bengal provinces from India into East and West Pakistan. Muslims and Hindus weren’t the only ones being separated from each other. Sikhs and people from other faiths were affected as well.
A Sikh pilgrimage was divided because of the new border, Punjabi people of all faiths were separated from each other, and a culture was ultimately divided.
This Vox Borders episode looks at how the Radcliffe line changed Punjab and how communities are affected now.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Rapids (#613)
[Original Airdate: April 6, 2017]
Smack dab in the middle of the state, we found Wisconsin Rapids. True, it’s not hard to find, but it is hard to leave! Wisconsin Rapids is a paper making town, and has been almost 200 years. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we came. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the world, and John had never been in a bog – ever! The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries treated us to an amazing experience that almost left John speechless (almost, but thank goodness, not quite!). But after we experienced all things cranberry, we learned that the unique geology in the center of our state allowed for the building of what is quickly becoming a world renowned destination for golf. And with a name like “Rapids” you know we spent some time along the river. Wisconsin Rapids is gorgeous. We hated to leave, but it was the perfect place to wrap up our sixth season.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Oconomowoc (#311)
[Latest Airdate: July 20, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 27, 2014]
As John says, Oconomowoc will make you jealous. Wait until you see the homes and the lakes (and the homes on the lakes) and the Batmobile! No kidding -- Batman and Robin live here, didn't you know? Then maybe you also don't know that in Oconomowoc you'll find: The oldest complete stained glass window at Oakbrook Esser (and the other unbelievable windows that Paul makes); Sacred Indian Lotuses that only exist in the U.S. just off Terry and Dirk's pier in Lac la Belle; A marble dog bathtub in the Marjorie Ward estate; The more than 100 million sq. ft. (not a typo!) Roundy's distribution center; and Brownberry Bread being made at the rate of 180 loaves a minute!
In downtown Oconomowoc, kids can learn to cook, adults can mediate and worship, horses can be outfitted and, of course, everyone can eat. See? John was right -- but don't be jealous, just settle in and enjoy this hard to spell town in the heart of Lake Country. Yes, Oconomowoc already has a lot of O's, but let us add one more: O-utstanding!
