Grand Canyon Caverns
The Grand Canyon Caverns full tour! Located just a few miles east of Peach Springs, Arizona, lie 230 feet (70 m) below ground level. They are among the largest dry caverns in the United States. Dry caverns compose only 3% of caverns in the world. Because of the lack of water, stalagmites and stalactites are rare in the caverns. Air comes into the caverns from the Grand Canyon through 60 miles (97 km) of limestone caves, a fact discovered when red smoke flares were ignited in the caves, and two weeks later, red smoke was seen protruding from vents, near Supai, AZ, in the Grand Canyon.
During the Mississippian Period 345 million years ago, the southwest United States was covered by ocean. Skeletons of sea life settling to the depths, created a mud with a high percentage of calcium. This eventually hardened into the limestone bedrock seen in the caverns today. Over millions of years, the bedrock was pushed up to over 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level.
Approximately 35 million years ago, rainfall flowed into the rock, and eroded passages that lead to the Colorado River and what is now the Grand Canyon. Millions of years later, the evaporating water left calcium deposits on the walls and floors, creating the formations that can be viewed today. Filmed by Brandon Smithey and Mark Miessner

Vintage Unknown Traction Manual Door Elevator at Grand Canyon Caverns in Peach Springs, AZ
This is the only elevator I filmed in Arizona on my Las Vegas trip. This elevator goes 210 feet deep, or about 21 floors deep. When I was here, the power was out (possibly because there was a thunderstorm visible, though I don't know for sure), and the building, the elevator, and the lights in the cavern were being powered with a generator. I'm not sure who made the fixtures, but they could be C.J. Anderson HNR-B fixtures. The hall station on ground level is behind a desk (I'm not sure where the hall station in the cavern is). I got permission to look at the ground level hall station.
Year installed: 1962

ROUTE 66 GUIDE #24/31 *Williams, Grand Canyon and Seligman, AZ*
At this point, we have done three quarter of the travel to be able to arrive, we rushed a bit our tours, unfortunately because, Williams is a pretty town, a little Far West.
If you are doing Route 66 in full and you have at least three weeks I advise you to stop at the Grand Canyon.
Here we are in the town of Sigman for my date at this 91-year-old barber, born in 1927 who is still active. Some call him the father of the mother road.
