Grand Portage National Monument (Grand Portage, MN)
Visit by twin sisters to the Grand Portage National Monument on the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Portage, Minnesota, including a walk through the heritage center and the recreated stockade/main hall and voyageur encampment and to the trail end. The girls tried their hand at lacrosse and watched the milling of wild rice. (They were too late to help with the baking of bread in the kiln/oven.) This is one of the nicest national historic sites in the country -- and it is accessible from a birch bark canoe.

Grand Portage National Monument is a United States National Monument located on the north shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota that preserves a vital center of fur trade activity and Anishinaabeg Ojibwe heritage.
The Grand Portage is an 8.5 mi footpath which bypasses a set of waterfalls and rapids on the last 20 mi of the Pigeon River before it flows into Lake Superior. This path is part of the historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs and coureur des bois between their wintering grounds and their depots to the east.
Composed of the Pigeon River and other strategic interior streams, lakes, and portages, this route was of enormous importance in pre-industrial times. It provided quick water access from Canada's settled areas and Atlantic ports to the fur-rich North-Western Territory. Some 50 mi upstream from Lake Superior, this trade route crosses the Height of Land Portage, on the Northern continental divide, and connects South Lake in the Pigeon River/Great Lakes watershed with North Lake of the Rainy River watershed. Grand Portage therefore was an essential link between the drainage basin of the Nelson River to Arctic Ocean and that of the Saint Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean.
As early as 2,000 years ago, Indian Nations probably used Gichi-onigaming, or “the Great Carrying Place”, to travel from summer homes on Lake Superior to winter hunting grounds in the interior of Minnesota and Ontario. In 1729 Cree guide Auchagah drew a map for some of the first French fur traders, to show them how to reach the western sea of Lake Winnipeg. In time, Grand Portage became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets.

“We are so glad that the dust has settled and the building phase is over,” says chairman Norman Deschampe. “The new Grand Portage Lodge and Casino offers guests excellent facilities to stay, play, eat, and host meetings and banquets right here on the North Shore. Our location is spectacular, our doors are open, and we want to share this wonderful place.”
The final renovations have transformed Antlers Lounge with an eight-tap draft system and big screen TVs and rejuvenated the iconic Island View Dining Room while still offering excellent fare and big lake views. New banquet and meeting rooms are part of a complete overhaul of the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino event center where visitors can look forward to a schedule of weekend comedy and music.
“We’ve had bookings for family occasions, bridal and baby showers, weddings, birthday getaways, and many other celebrations,” says Frank Vecchio, Grand Portage Lodge and Casino Marketing Manager. “Everyone loves the new spaces, especially our beautiful pool complex with direct outdoor access to Portage Bay. I don’t think there’s a better place to stay and play on the North Shore.”

Travel into the past to discover the present. Explore the partnership of the Grand Portage Ojibwe and the North West Company during the North American fur trade. Follow pathways into a distant time. There is also a trail - Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile (13.7 km) (2720 rod) footpath which bypasses a set of waterfalls and rapids on the last 20 miles (32 km) of the Pigeon River before it flows into Lake Superior. This path is part of the historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs and coureur des bois between their wintering grounds and their depots to the east.
Composed of the Pigeon River and other strategic interior streams, lakes, and portages, this route was of enormous importance in pre-industrial times. It provided quick water access from Canada's settled areas and Atlantic ports to the fur-rich Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory. Some 50 miles (80 km) upstream from Lake Superior, this trade route crosses the Height of Land Portage, on the Northern continental divide, and connects South Lake in the Pigeon River/Great Lakes watershed with North Lake of the Rainy River watershed. Grand Portage therefore was an essential link between the drainage basin of the Nelson River to Hudson Bay and that of the Saint Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Grand Portage Trail (Grand Portage, MN)
Twin sisters take a few steps along the Grand Portage Trail adjacent the grounds of the stockade at the Grand Portage National Monument (Minnesota). We saved that 8+ mile (17-mile round trip) hike for another year (a few years from now).
The Grand Portage Trail
Its all about the journey in Grand Portage. Karl Koster, Park Ranger at Grand Portage National Monument, explains how the Grand Portage Trail connected people and commerce during the fur trading era in The Slice from WDSE.
Grand Portage State Park
A hike with my daughters to Minnesota's highest waterfall, on a cold wet June day. This was my first attempt at editing, also shoot on a old s7 smartphone. Thanks for watching.
Grand Portage State Park, Grand Portage, Minnesota
Grand Portage State park. Highest waterfalls in Minnesota. Estimated at 130-150 feet although has never been measured. Sorry for the water drops on my lens. I was a ways away and still could feel the mist.
This falls is on the Pigeon river that meanders through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) along Minnesota, US and Ontario, Canada border and drains into Lake Superior.
