Grand Ravines Park - Jenison, MI
Getting a bit chilly here in Michigan. Still gonna send it.
CAL ALDRINK CANOEING THE FLOODED GRAND RIVER (GRAND RAVINES PARK - OTTAWA COUNTY) (5-27-2004)
In the many years that Cal and Diana Aldrink lived on their property (Now owned by Ottawa Country: Grand Ravines Park N.) that connected to the south property line of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan -- Cal said he had never remembered the flooding of the Grand River to be as high as it was that day.
The owner of the pontoon boat was Tom Aldrink. Tom's ministry for years was to fire up his pontoon boat on Thursday evening and fish the Grand River while doing a little late-night barbequing, and anyone who wanted to come along with him was welcome. Many a person shared on Tom's boat the struggles with life they were going through, and the waters of the Holy Spirit helped cleanse their soul by the time they left the river.
Here is a video clip of CAL'S CROSS:
DID GOD DIE?
Grand Ravines Suspension Bridge Construction
We were able to capture video footage of the Grand Ravines suspension bridge being constructed and pair it with photos taken by Lee Koets throughout the project. This special Ottawa County Parks project was funded by Bea Aldrink Idema and dedicated in honor of Ray and Alma Statema. The bridge was designed by UP Engineering & Construction and built by Anlaan Corporation. Enjoy!
*Easiest access to the bridge is on south side of the park, off Fillmore; take paved path on east side of the park about a quarter of a mile.
THE CROSS AT THE GRAND RAVINES COUNTY PARK IN OTTAWA COUNTY, MI - Filmed By: Norm Rasmussen
Before Ottawa Country purchased the land that the North Ravine County Park is now located at, (just south of Grand Valley State University) Cal Aldrink (the owner of the property at the time) put up a cross near the Grand River to glorify Jesus Christ and what God the Father accomplished for humanity through his death, burial and resurrection.
I spoke with Cal often, as we gazed over the picturesque beauty this video shows. Cal told me that the bridge you see was symbolic of the truth that Jesus Christ bridged the gap between an all holy God and sinful mankind - separating each other for all eternity ... had Jesus not became THAT bridge to allow humanity to be able to be united with God -- Jesus having paid the penalty for mankind's sins ... so they could be forgiven; not held against them.
It was truly a sad day for many when the county decided to tare the cross down. Thankfully, they let the bridge of God remain.
RAISING OF THE CAL ALDRINK CROSS ON THE GRAND RIVER (GRAND RAVINES COUNTY PARK, OTTAWA COUNTY)
On September 15, 2005, a bunch of friends helped Cal Aldrink plant a big cross near the Grand River in Western Michigan, just south of the Grand Valley State University property. The cross can be seen from the Grand River Bridge.
Norm Rasmussen, a good friend of Cal's, videotaped the cross raising (Norm is founder of the evangelistic ministry:
The cross has since been torn down, but before Cal passed away, he shared with me (Norm Rasmussen) that he had prayed that if the cross ever was torn down, that OTHER property owners along the Grand River would erect a cross of THEIR own - as a reminder to people on the river that God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to atone for the sins of the world by giving his life on the cross for every person.

How Does The Civil War Qualify as the First Modern War?
For 5,800 years of recorded history, wars were fought with pre-modern forms of transportation ad communication, where the world was powered by windmills, watermills, literal horse power and human muscle. However, this all changed with the invention of the steam engine and its implementation in the 19th century. In fifty short years, macadamized roads, canals, steam trains, steam boats, steam presses and telegraph communication revolutionized the transfer of energy and power. By the 1850s, every aspect of western civilization looked and functioned differently than it had for thousands of years. It was in this milieu the Civil War was fought. What did the first modern war look like and how did it differ from previous wars? How did wartime observations by foreign emissaries alter the course of future wars?
