China now - around National Centre for the Performing Arts
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) (simplified Chinese: 国家大剧院; traditional Chinese: 國家大劇院; pinyin: Guojia da juyuan; literally: National Grand Theatre), and colloquially described as The Giant Egg (巨蛋), is an arts centre containing an opera house in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The Centre, an ellipsoid dome of titanium and glass surrounded by an artificial lake, seats 5,452 people in three halls and is almost 12,000 m² in size. It was designed by French architect Paul Andreu.

Beijing Dazhalan Street Tour
Beijing Dashilan or Dashilar Street / 大栅栏 / 大柵欄 is a famous business street outside Qianmen in Beijing, China. Now the term Dashilanr is also used to refer to the area comprising, besides Dashilanr itself, also the Langfang Toutiao Lane, Liangshidian Street and Meishi Street.
In 1488, in order to secure the public safety of the capital, the central government built wooden fences at all the entrances to the streets and lanes in Beijing. The fence was accomplished with contributions from the local residents, and the total number of the fences was more than 1,700 by the end of the Qing dynasty. Among them, the Langfang Sitiao street’s fence was funded by the merchants. For this reason, the fence was extremely large and thus got the name Dashilanr. With the passage of time, Dashilanr gradually became the formal name of the street replacing Langfang Sitiao.
For centuries, the traditional commercial street Dashilanr has held quite a few Lao zihaos which are well-known both at China and abroad. The Lao zihaos, such as Tongrentang (Chinese: 同仁堂; pinyin: Tóngréntáng) Chinese herbal medicine store, Rui Fu Xiang (Chinese: 瑞蚨祥; pinyin: ruìfúxiáng) silk store, Ma Ju Yuan (Chinese: 马聚元; pinyin: Mǎjùyuán) hat store, Nei Lian Sheng (Chinese: 内联升; pinyin: Neìliánshéng) shoe store, Zhang Yi Yuan (Chinese: 张一元; pinyin: Zhāngyīyuán) tea shop, and Liu Bi Ju (Chinese: 六必居; pinyin: Liùbìjū) pickle shop, as well as Yi Pin Zhai (Chinese: 一品斋; pinyin: Yīpǐnzhāi), Bu Ying Zhai (Chinese: 步瀛斋; pinyin: Bùyíngzhāi), Ju Shun He (Chinese: 聚顺和; pinyin: Jùshùnhé), Chang Sheng Kui (Chinese: 长盛魁; pinyin: Chángshèngkuí), are over 100 years old.
There once was a saying in Beijing, Wear the hats of Ma Ju Yuan, stand in the shoes of Nei Lian Sheng, wear the clothes of Ba Da Xiang, and take the money of Si Da Heng Banks. Ma Ju Yuan, Nei Lian Sheng, Ba Da Xiang (Chinese: 八大祥; pinyin: Bādàxiáng) and Si Da Heng (Chinese: 四大恒; pinyin: Sìdàhéng) are all stores located in Dashilanr that are taken as the symbols of wealth.
Dashilanr was also the former entertainment center of Beijing apart from the commercial center. There were five grand Chinese opera theaters in Dashilanr – Qingle Yuan (Chinese: 庆乐园; pinyin: Qìnglèyuán), Sanqing Yuan (Chinese: 三庆园; pinyin: Sānqìngyuán), Guangde Lou (Chinese: 广德楼; pinyin: Guǎngdélóu), Guanghe Yuan (Chinese: 广和园; pinyin: Guǎnghéyuán), Tongle Yuan (Chinese: 同乐园; pinyin: Tónglèyuán); the first movie theater in Beijing, Daguan Lou (Chinese: 大观楼; pinyin: Dàguānlóu), also situated there.

SUMMARY
=======
Shanghai (Chinese: 上海; Mandarin pronunciation: [ʂâŋ.xài] (listen); Wu pronunciation: [zɑ̃.hɛ] (listen)) is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city proper in the world, with a population of more than 24 million as of 2017. It is a global financial centre and transport hub, with the world's busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta, it sits on the south edge of the estuary of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the East China coast. The municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the north, south and west, and is bounded to the east by the East China Sea.As a major administrative, shipping and trading city, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to trade and recognition of its favourable port location and economic potential. The city was one of five treaty ports forced open to foreign trade following the British victory over China in the First Opium War. The subsequent 1842 Treaty of Nanking and 1844 Treaty of Whampoa allowed the establishment of the Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession. The city then flourished as a centre of commerce between China and other parts of the world (predominantly the Occident), and became the primary financial hub of the Asia-Pacific region in the 1930s. However, with the Communist Party takeover of the mainland in 1949, trade was limited to other socialist countries, and the city's global influence declined. In the 1990s, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city. It has since re-emerged as a hub for international trade and finance; it is the home of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world's largest by market capitalization.Shanghai has been described as the showpiece of the booming economy of mainland China; renowned for its Lujiazui skyline, and museums and historic buildings, such as those along The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden.

SUMMARY
=======
Chiang Kai-shek (; 31 October 1887 – 5 April 1975), also known as Generalissimo Chiang or Chiang Chungcheng and romanized as Chiang Chieh-shih or Jiang Jieshi, was a politician and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975, first in mainland China until 1949 and then in exile in Taiwan. He was recognized by much of the world as the head of the legitimate government of China until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Chiang was an influential member of the Kuomintang (KMT), the Chinese Nationalist Party, as well as a close ally of Sun Yat-sen's. Chiang became the Commandant of the Kuomintang's Whampoa Military Academy and took Sun's place as leader of the KMT following the Canton Coup in early 1926. Having neutralized the party's left wing, Chiang then led Sun's long-postponed Northern Expedition, conquering or reaching accommodations with China's many warlords. From 1928 to 1948, Chiang served as chairman of the National Government of the Republic of China (ROC). Chiang was socially conservative, promoting traditional Chinese culture in the New Life Movement. Unable to maintain Sun's good relations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Chiang purged them in a massacre at Shanghai and repressed uprisings at Kwangtung (Canton region) and elsewhere.
At the onset of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which later became the Chinese theater of World War II, Manchurian warlord Zhang Xueliang kidnapped Chiang and obliged him to establish a Second United Front with the CCP. After the defeat of the Japanese, the American-sponsored Marshall Mission, an attempt to negotiate a coalition government, failed in 1946. The Chinese Civil War resumed, with the CCP led by Mao Zedong defeating the KMT and declaring the People's Republic of China in 1949. Chiang's government and army retreated to Taiwan, where Chiang imposed martial law and persecuted critics in a period known as the White Terror. After evacuating to Taiwan, Chiang's government continued to declare its intention to retake mainland China. Chiang ruled Taiwan securely as President of the Republic of China and General of the Kuomintang until his death in 1975, just one year before Mao's death.Like Mao, Chiang is regarded as a controversial figure. Supporters credit him with playing a major part in the Allied victory of World War II and unifying the nation and a national figure of the Chinese resistance against Japan as well as his staunch anti-Soviet and anti-communist stance. Detractors and critics denounce him as a dictator at the front of an authoritarian autocracy who suppressed and purged opponents and critics and arbitrarily incarcerated those he deemed as opposing to the Kuomintang among others.

SUMMARY
=======
Shandong (山东; formerly romanised as Shantung) is a coastal province of the People's Republic of China, and is part of the East China region.
Shandong has played a major role in Chinese history from the beginning of Chinese civilization along the lower reaches of the Yellow River and served as a pivotal cultural and religious site for Taoism, Chinese Buddhism, and Confucianism. Shandong's Mount Tai is the most revered mountain of Taoism and one of the world's sites with the longest history of continuous religious worship. The Buddhist temples in the mountains to the south of the provincial capital of Jinan were once among the foremost Buddhist sites in China. The city of Qufu is the birthplace of Confucius, and was later established as the center of Confucianism.
Shandong's location at the intersection of ancient as well as modern north–south and east–west trading routes have helped to establish it as an economic center. After a period of political instability and economic hardship that began in the late 19th century, Shandong has emerged as one of the most populous (95,793,065 inhabitants at the 2010 Census) and most affluent provinces in the People's Republic of China with a GDP of CNY¥5.942 trillion in 2014, or USD$967 billion, making it China's third wealthiest province.

'Steel Piano' Victory
Follow us on TWITTER:

The most recent Chinese film, The Steel Piano, or
Gang De Qin, is a story about a group of unemployed
ex-workers in China's northeast region,
who built a piano from scratch.
Though the film won first prize at the Tokyo International Film
Festival and the Shanghai International Film Festival,
its box office sales have been bad. What's the reason?
In the film Steel Piano, the hero Chen Guilin is unemployed.
His wife elopes with another man, who sells fake medicine
and wants to take away his daughter, as well.
The daughter, who longs to become a musician,
proclaims that she will marry a man, who can give her a piano.
To win his daughter over, Chen Guilin, a rather poor man,
tried every way to satisfy his daughter's wishes,
including stealing.
At last, he and his fellow workers made a piano themselves
with bits of material they managed to collect, here and there.
In the film, his daughter played a beautiful piece on the piano.
This film not only won The Movie Channel Media Award
in Shanghai this year, but also won first prize at the
Tokyo International Film Festival.
However, its box office sales have been rather poor.
Hu Ping, chief editor of Beijing Spring magazine said that
Despite the many humorous plots in the film,
it nevertheless is a sad story, too miserable for
the Chinese people to enjoy in theaters,
as they've experienced enough sadness in their lives already.
In the 90s, due to the many Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
reforms that were fueled by massive capital losses,
many state-owned-enterprises (SOE) are suffering finically.
Thus, the working class still experiences untold hardships.
Hu Ping: The CCP turned itself into capitalists through the
so-called SOE reforms, which is blatant robbery.
And it's not the first time that this kind of thing has happened.
It also happened when the CCP took control of China and
seized the assets of landlords and business owners.
The CCP's actions, in both cases, are the most evil and corrupt.
The social and political problems that existed a dozen years
ago, still exist today, including unemployment and corruption.
About 60 unemployed tobacco workers protested in front of
the head tobacco office in Hunan Province, China.
They carried a large banner, demanding their jobs back
after they were forced to retire due to an early buy-out offer.
Chen Wei, of the Huanggang Tobacco Company in Hubei:
The CCP forced the tobacco workers to retire by accepting
a buy-out offer against their will.
Xie Hongying, from the Huanggang Tobacco Company:
They only give us 6,000 yuan (US$940) a year!
I can never live on this small amount of compensation.
Poverty seems to be the biggest trouble for unemployed
tobacco workers.
Kuang Jinlian from the Huanggang Tobacco Company:
I am now too poor to pay my pension installments,
let alone my everyday living expenses.
Hu Ping said that people from the West might get fooled
by China's seemingly flourishing economy.
Hu Ping: The problem China's private and SOE's
are now facing is essentially different from that in the West.
Most Westerners are confused on this matter,
as they see it as an economic issue, rather than blatant robbery.
Hu also said if tens of thousands of workers were laid off
at the same time in Western countries,
it would trigger serious unrest throughout the country.
Despite the fact that the wave of democracy hasn't yet begun,
in China, Hu thinks that in the future, those tens of thousands
of unemployed workers will become the main force behind
a push for democracy in China.

Shaoxing Opera (绍兴 剧) performance in Taipei, Taiwan
An opera troupe from Shaoxing (绍兴/紹興) in Zhejiang province (浙江省), China (中国/中國) presents opera renditions of popular Chinese folk tales during the 8th Taiwan-Jejang Cultural Festival (Shau Shing Culture Festival) at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (國立國父紀念館) in Taipei City (臺北市/台北市), Taiwan (臺灣/台灣) on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
Shaoxing has long been a hotbed of Chinese cultural activity, producing such luminary figures as Wang Xizhi, Zhou Enlai, Lu Xun, and Cai Yuanpei. Its local variety of Chinese opera sung in the local dialect and known as Shaoxing opera (绍兴剧) or Yue Ju (越剧) is second in popularity only to Peking or Beijing opera (京剧/京劇). Notable actors of Yue Ju are Yuan Xuefen (袁雪芬), Wang Wenjuan (王文娟), Fu Quanxiang (傅全香), Lu Ruiying, Zhang Yunxia, Jin Caifeng, Qi Yaxian, Bi Chunfang, Fan Ruijuan, Yin Guifang, Xu Yulan, Lu Jinhua, Zhu Shuizhao and Zhao Zhigang, among others.

SUMMARY
=======
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a country in East Asia and the world's most populous country, with a population of around 1.404 billion. Covering approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), it is the third- or fourth-largest country by total area, depending on the source consulted. Governed by the Communist Party of China, the state exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
China emerged as one of the world's earliest civilizations, in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, or dynasties, beginning with the semi-legendary Xia dynasty in 21st century BCE. Since then, China has expanded, fractured, and re-unified numerous times. In the 3rd century BCE, the Qin unified core China and established the first Chinese empire. The succeeding Han dynasty, which ruled from 206 BC until 220 AD, saw some of the most advanced technology at that time, including papermaking and the compass, along with agricultural and medical improvements. The invention of gunpowder and movable type in the Tang dynasty (618–907) and Northern Song (960–1127) completed the Four Great Inventions. Tang culture spread widely in Asia, as the new maritime Silk Route brought traders to as far as Mesopotamia and Horn of Africa. Dynastic rule ended in 1912 with the Xinhai Revolution, when a republic replaced the Qing dynasty. The Chinese Civil War resulted in a division of territory in 1949, when the Communist Party of China established the People's Republic of China, a unitary one-party sovereign state on Mainland China, while the Kuomintang-led government retreated to the island of Taiwan. The political status of Taiwan remains disputed.
Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China's economy has been one of the world's fastest-growing with annual growth rates consistently above 6 percent. As of 2016, it is the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP and largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). China is also the world's largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods. China is a recognized nuclear weapons state and has the world's largest standing army and second-largest defense budget. The PRC is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council as it replaced the ROC in 1971, as well as an active global partner of ASEAN Plus mechanism. China is also a leading member of numerous formal and informal multilateral organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), WTO, APEC, BRICS, the BCIM, and the G20. China is a great power and a major regional power within Asia, and has been characterized as a potential superpower.

Description: The Chinese tradition of Yueju opera combines Mandarin operatic traditions and Cantonese dialect. Rooted in the Cantonese-speaking provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi in south-eastern China, Yueju opera is characterized by a combination of string and percussion instruments, with elaborate costumes and face painting. It also incorporates stunts and fights using real weapons and drawing on the Shaolin martial arts, as illustrated by the central Wenwusheng role that demands proficiency in both singing and fighting. It has developed a rich repertoire of stories ranging from historical epics to more realistic descriptions of daily life. An important form of recreation, the opera is also, in some rural communities, combined with ceremonial, religious and sacrificial elements into a spiritual amalgam of art and custom known as Shengongxi. Yueju opera is popular throughout China and provides a cultural bond among Cantonese speakers in the country and abroad. They view its success around the world as a point of pride, regarding the opera as an important means by which foreigners come to understand their culture. Today, the tradition is passed to new artists through both drama schools and apprenticeship programmes.
