Colfax, California
Colfax (formerly, Alden Grove, Alder Grove, Illinoistown, and Upper Corral) is a city in Placer County, California, at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and State Route 174. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,963 at the 2010 census. The town is named in honor of U.S. Vice President Schuyler Colfax (1869–73), a bronze statue of whom stands at Railroad Street and Grass Valley Street. (This is the only known statue of Schuyler Colfax in the United States). Some of the town's notable features include the newly restored Southern Pacific Railroad colonnade-style depot (which houses the Colfax Museum and Chamber of Commerce) built in 1905, the downtown shops on Main Street, and Colfax High School, which serves a large surrounding area.
Originally inhabited by the Maidu and Miwok Indians, by the mid-19th century the city site was known as Alder Grove; however, as development increased, the city became known as Illinoistown.
Later it was renamed Colfax after then Speaker of the House (and later Vice President) Schuyler Colfax who visited the town in 1865 while inspecting progress of construction of the Central Pacific Railroad, the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad. The city was the southern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad from 1876 until the railroad’s removal in 1942. Historic U.S. Route 40 also runs through the city as well as the more modern Interstate 80. The city is mentioned in Jules Verne’s book, Around the World in Eighty Days.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles, all of it land. The 2010 United States Census reported that Colfax had a population of 1,963.

Hilary Hodge Speech
Hilary Hodge, candidate for Nevada County Supervisor, speaking to the crowd at her year-end fundraising event.
Hilary Hodge is a sixth-generation native Northern Californian. Her rural roots go back to the 1850s, when her family moved out west to begin homesteading in the newly established Golden State. Hilary grew up in the eastern part of the Bay Area and moved to Sacramento when she began attending the University of California at Davis. Hilary spent ten years in California’s state capital before moving to Nevada County.
Hilary started her career out of college in Social Services, working as a case manager for low income families receiving subsidized child care in Sacramento County. She is a long-time activist for social justice and has worked for nonprofit agencies and organizations for nearly twenty years. Hilary Hodge currently serves as the Executive Director of Sierra Commons, Nevada County’s nonprofit business education center and coworking space.
“I believe in putting our community first,” says Hilary. “I know that when we invest in local people and local dreams, our community and our economy is better for it.”
Hilary sits on the board of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and on the Government Affairs Committee for the Nevada County regional chambers. Hilary sings with the Music in the Mountains Chorus and volunteers with the Golden Country Gleaners, an organization that brings fresh produce to Nevada County’s service organizations that feed the hungry.
When Hilary isn’t working or volunteering, she is tending to her garden or reading a book. Hilary lives with her family in Grass Valley.

The Broadway Fountain - Horton Plaza, San Diego, California, USA - Crystal Fountains
On January 11, 2011, the San Diego City Council unanimously voted to approve a unique public-private partnership between Westfield and the City of San Diego. This plan created a world-class Urban Plaza as well as beautified and restored the historic park and fountain adjacent to this property, re-establishing it as the regional treasure that it was in the early-to-mid 1900’s.
Horton Plaza Park is a multi-tiered alfresco mall nestled among gleaming office towers, and is most notable for its housing of The Broadway Fountain. Originally designed by Irving Gill and modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, the fountain was certainly a true work of art, but a solid maintenance plan for the plaza was never developed. By 1955 the deteriorated condition could no longer be ignored and the Chamber of Commerce requested the removal of the fountain, palms and grass. Heated letters were printed in local papers from readers who wanted the plaza they knew and loved put in good condition rather than simply destroyed. Siding with its citizens, the Council voted to clean the plaza and renovate.
Therefore, in 1985 the plaza and fountain underwent a revitalization in conjunction with the addition of the adjacent shopping centre. It recently underwent yet another beautification, and now stands as an even greater marvel by virtue of its colored underwater LED lighting and state-of-the-art timing and pumping mechanisms. Having played host to the likes of John F Kennedy and Benjamin Harrison, countless other VIP talks, and a variety of demonstrations, the plaza still stands today as a designated San Diego historic landmark. Fortunately under the new partnership the fountain and surrounding area will also continue to play host to many exciting and monumental events, and provide the ideal location for local and tourist entertainment for years to come.
