Biking Tourism Phnom Penh
Recently, there has been an emergence of a new tourism business, biking tourism, where one hops onto a bike and travels along the trails provided and recommended. It's a healthy way to explore the city area and its culture. This kind of activity is getting to be more popular in the Asian region. A company operating in Phnom Penh is a good example of this free form tourism.
The biking tours provided by Grasshopper Adventures, a biking tour company offer various types of packages, from a half day tour to a week-long tour. Tours can cover a certain part of the city, up to the whole country; there are also many levels of biking provided to suit all members of a family. Tourists on a tour are provided with a bicycle for the duration of their journey. Cyclists have to pass through many types of terrain, from simple paths to rugged roads, and even board boats that cruise along rivers and canals in order to reach some of the hidden beauty spots of Phnom Penh. It's an off-road journey that is recommended for the interested traveler.
Our correspondent took the Island of the Mekong tour provided by Grasshopper Adventures, which is a half day tour in Phnom Penh, starting at 8 in the morning, at the company's shop where you will meet your guide. On this outing the guide is Pat Sreymom. Then you just have to choose the right bike for the ride, put on a helmet and off you go! From the shop we bike down to the bay area to take the Arrey Krast (pronounced: Alexsas) ferry. We spend 10 minutes on the boat to reach the Arrey Krast, or what the local people called Mango Island (due to the number of mango trees grown in the area).
Once we are off the ferry, we cycle around the mainland, looking at some of the gardens, the local market, and trying the food of the area. There are quite a few people selling things which is a way of life for many, and after the market we cycling through the village and we get to learn more about the people who live there. Later on Sreymom took us to visit a weaving house, where we briefly study the life cycle of a silk worm. Add to that the product after weaving, how to make the colors, and the design peocess and soon you have covered quite a distance! So while we are stopped here we are provided with snacks, and refreshing water. Then we take a second ferry to go on to a Mekong island to cycle through orchards and market gardens. Enjoy the peaceful farmland and learn about the lives of the people who live there, before returning to Phnom Penh again at around noon for lunch. This is also the end of the easy going bicycle tour.
This tour covers a distance of 25 km, but believe it or not this distance even for those who don't usually exercise will not make you feel any tiredness, as it’s a fun and exciting tour.
Biking tourism might not in the minds of many people despite the bicycle being introduced a couple of hundred years ago, but just recently this idea has been gaining popularity especially in South East Asia. Peter Lawrence Country Manager, Grasshopper Adventures, said about this growing business. It’s a niche market, not everyone is interested in biking , and not everyone thinks of it when they are booking tours, but it’s definitely a growing market. With the congestion of the modern world, it’s really nice to step outside the day to day environment and just slow down a bit, you know get on a road that a car can’t go on; it’s not crowded, there’s no traffic. Only a bike can go on these single walking tracks and you really slow down to experience the local culture.
Such trips are well organized and this half day adventure where everything is provided including bike rentals, helmets, food, water, snacks, all the riding you do during the trip and a meal after the ride, costs US$39.
This type of tour is also found in other parts of Asia and is available in Thailand as well. Biking Tourism is an alternative way to travel and learn more about a country, so next time you are on a vacation, in Southeast Asia or in many parts of the world, it may well be the way to go. Biking tourism is also available in Thailand. - See more at:

Angkor Wat bike tour | 2018 |
We explored Angkor Wat by bike and foot, all day bike tour. Was very hot and not enough time at all stops to properly cool down and explore more. Was a good experience though, might go by a tuk tuk next time. Small group of about 8-10 people.

Self-guided ANGKOR BIKE TOUR & Cambodia geocache find first time | Cambodia Travel
Not being ones to join a tour, we went on our own self-guided Angkor bike tour. We were able to visit so many of the beautiful and fascinating temple ruins over 2 days. Stamped Together ( gave us a little hint to explore one temple in particular and make a Cambodia geocache our first find.
The Angkor temple complex is absolutely huge. Even though we didn't make use of all three days of our pass, the two days we DID spent there hardly scratched the surface of the temples.
By taking your own self-guided Angkor bike tour you can explore everything at your own pace and take in Cambodia and the great friendly people here. We love taking ourselves on our own bike tours, and being able to explore hidden gems is the real reason. As well we normally save a bit of money which helps us on our budget travel adventure!

3 years ago, we did a little crowdfunding to raise funds to support our journey of cycling from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, to Angkor Wat, Cambodia. It was a personal project in search of identity. I hope you will enjoy the video even though it was recorded 3 years ago & produced only now.
