'The Great Britain XII' | Day Four | Preston - Edinburgh | 30/04/19
After the over night stop in Preston, 'The Great Britain XII' set off bound for Scotland early this morning with a scenic day ahead of it! Today's motive power was the unusual combination of A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' and Black 5 44871.
We pick up the action just north of Preston as the pair headed north in the glorious morning sunshine, before attacking the climb to Shap in spectacular style. We see the due passing Greenholme about a mile into the climb.
After a quick stop at Penrith before a gentle stroll down to Carlisle, the second of the WCML banks was taken on. The assault of Beattock was no less impressive than Shap, with the locos getting stuck into the 10 miles or so of 1 in 80 and performing majestically.
Our last shot sees the pair accelerating away from an impromptu stop at Abingdon Loop en-route for the final destination of the day Edinburgh. The weather was fantastic in the first half of the day, however the forecast cloud for the late afternoon didn't spoil what was a tremendous day! We'll see what day five has install tomorrow. Hope you enjoy.

The Old Millhouse has a contemporary, luxurious finish while using original raw materials such as stone and wood to echo its heritage.
The mix of antiques and new design reflects this balance: there is a traditional, country-house feel, but also WiFi throughout, a Sonos music system and power showers in all the bathrooms. Owner Sally de Waard has lovingly hand-picked every element of the house interior, from the superb textiles and rugs to paintings and ceramics: her elegant style fuses a classic British look with a hint of the colonial and Far East, and it’s one of the things that makes The Old Millhouse so special.
The ground floor is where the magnificent sun room is located: with glass on three sides it’s the ideal place to enjoy the stunning garden view. The impressive fireplace, sofas you can sink into, and a dining table seating ten make this the hub of the house.
A sleek and professional-standard kitchen with breakfast bar has all the appliances you’d expect. A cosy den with its own bar is the perfect hideaway for enjoying a dram, while upstairs a beautiful drawing room with working fireplace and cleverly hidden wall-mounted TV is a lovely place to relax and watch a movie or the big match, with its window seats and sumptuous fabrics including Indian silks and linens.

Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh, Scotland is another one of Europe's truly great cities, a place noted for historic sites and modern culture that makes it one of the most popular destinations in the world.

Your visit to Edinburgh could be done comfortably in three days: on day one, Royal Mile and castle, day two, the busy shopping district of the New Town, historic neighborhoods and the National art museum; day three, to the Royal Yacht Britannia at waterfront Leith, National Museum of History and free time. Of course, in between all of these wonderful attractions your main activity is just the sheer pleasure of walking around in this beautiful city.
See our other movie featuring castle and royal yacht:
The main street that visitors love to see is the Royal Mile, loaded with shops, restaurants, statues, monuments, and great old buildings and lots of street entertainment to please the crowds.
The pub culture is alive and well here, a great place for a drink and to meet some locals. You can eat in a fancy restaurant from a variety of international cuisines. Or go casual with fish and chips.
And you can even stand up on the street and eat it like these young locals do.
Fish and chips has been a standard meal in Great Britain for over a hundred years and still very popular today. You can find it all over town. Perhaps not the healthiest meal, but very tasty and you don't have to dress up for dinner.
It seems that the Royal Mile is just one restaurant after another, mixed in with a few shops and old historic buildings. It is just the place to hang out when you're in Edinburgh.
Steam in the Highlands - The Jacobite Steam Train (July 2017)
Take a ride on The Jacobite steam passenger service from Fort William to Mallaig in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.
The West Highland Line route was featured in the Harry Potter films as the setting for the Hogwarts Express - most notably the viaduct at Glenfinnan.
This video marks my first time outside of the United States, and special thanks goes to Dayna Jodzio for driving on the wrong side of the road to get to these beautiful locations!

'The Great Britain XI' - Day Two | Scarborough - Edinburgh
Day Two of the Great Britain, and a first in the tours history as it headed from Scarborough to York, where 35018 British India Line took over the tour for a run over the Settle & Carlisle Line. The Merchant Navy has recently returned to traffic for the first time in preservation, so there was plenty to look forward to about this leg of the adventure!
Upon arrival at Carlisle, 35018 was substituted by WCRC regulars Jubilees 45690 'Leander' & 45699 'Galatea' for the climb of Beattock and to the days over night stop over at Edinburgh. They caught many photographers off guard by missing a pathing stop south of the climb and running the train 40 minutes early over the gradient.
However despite this, there were still some great shots to be had across the day with superb weather and a gentle breeze to really bring to life a fantastic days running! Day three coming soon, hope you enjoy!

Our visit Edinburgh travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and the city by day. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Edinburgh tourism brochure or Edinburgh, Scotland city tour.
20 Things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our week in Edinburgh was action packed! We sampled gin and Scotch whisky, wandered down tiny closes, braved the crowds along the Royal Mile, ate our fill of haggis, and even visited a castle, a palace, and an abbey. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Edinburgh on your visit, this video guide will show you all of those attractions and then some!
Edinburgh Castle is hard to miss as it dominates the city’s skyline. The first thing you should know about the Castle is that it’s not just one single building, so once you’re inside there’s quite a bit to see and do; you can tour the Royal Palace, see the Crown Jewels, watch the firing of the one o’clock gun, step inside St. Margaret’s Chapel, visit the National War Museum and so much more, so give yourself plenty of time.
We also made time to visit the famed Royal Mile, which is the busiest street in Edinburgh’s Old Town. There’s quite a bit to see along here, so we first popped into the Royal Mile Market, which is set inside a former church, and from there we continued down the street, visiting little souvenir shops along the way. You’ll have no trouble finding a kilt here!
Another activity we really enjoyed was taking a food tour with Eat Walk Edinburgh. We got to try a lot of delicious bites and beverages along the way, and one of the highlights was visiting the Fugde House.
Another fun way to explore Edinburgh on foot is by wandering down the tiny closes. These small alleys were often named after a memorable occupant, and the Old Town is full of them.
And that’s it for our visit to Edinburgh, Scotland. We hope you enjoyed following our travels and that this video gave you a few ideas of things to do, foods to try, and places to visit around the city. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in Edinburgh, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments section below. Until next time!
This is part of our Travel in Scotland video series showcasing Scottish food, Scottish culture and Scottish cuisine.

An Ohio Choir Brings Edinburgh’s St. Giles’ Cathedral to Life
Hello from Edinburgh! I’m in Scotland’s most important church: St. Giles’ Cathedral. This place is filled with Scottish history and pride — and today, it’s also filled with the sounds of a visiting choir from America (Capriccio Columbus, from Ohio).
Edinburgh is packed with tourists who all seem to stick to the touristy zones. This clip illustrates how to fill your days with fun travel memories. You just need to take a few steps away from the crowds, know the context of what you’re looking at, and take advantage of local information — so you’re there when the choir sings (or for whatever is slated to happen).

Scotland Days Away From Historic Vote To Break Away From The U.K
On September 18 Scotland will vote on whether it wants to split away from the United Kingdom and end its 307-year dependence on London, with a “yes” vote threatening to strip the UK of some of its key defense facilities and significantly shrink its population and landmass, thus further decreasing its international influence.
But the fact is that the still United Kingdom is actually facing two referendums: one that would mean a lot for the country’s physical geography, while the second could potentially sever its ties with the world’s largest market, which is the European Union.
[4K] Summer Evening Plane Spotting at Edinburgh Airport | 777 767 737s A320NEOS & More
During the summer months, especially in June, Edinburgh is great for spotting in the evenings, due to the royal mail cargo activity. The cargo movements can only be captured in daylight for a few months of the year. After year’s of trying I finally filmed the cargos at Edinburgh Airport on one of the longest days of 2019. Aircraft movements include, an Emirates 777, Star Air Boeing 767-300ER, a DHL Boeing 757-200F, various 737 classic freighters and much more. I definitely plan to film the cargo movements again next year.
