Dune du Pilat in France, the Tallest Sand Dune in Europe
The Dune of Pilat, also called Grande Dune du Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe. It is located in La Teste-de-Buch in the Arcachon Bay area, France, 60 km from Bordeaux.
The dune has a volume of about 60,000,000 cubic metres, measuring around 500 metres wide from east to west and 2.7 km in length from north to south. Its height is currently 110 metres above sea level. The dune is a famous tourist destination with more than one million visitors per year.
The dune is considered a foredune, meaning a dune that runs parallel to a shoreline, behind the high tide line of a beach. The dune has been observed to move landward, slowly pushing the forest back to cover houses, roads and portions of the Atlantic Wall. To back this evidence of coastal movement, maps from 1708 and 1786 both place areas with the name Pilat to the south and off-shore of the current dune's location. The area where the dune currently stands was referred to Les Sabloneys or the New Sands until the 1930s when it was renamed by real estate developers as the Dune of Pilat. Pilat originates from the Gascon word Pilhar, which refers to a heap or mound.
You can climb the side or the stairs to its peak. The long side faces the Atlantic, and there is a small cafe on the beach. Be careful if you are barefoot or in sandals, the sand gets pretty hot in the sun.

Avec ses 2,7 kilomètres de sable fin, la dune du Pilat est une originalité environnementale aussi belle que surprenante. Ils sont nombreux, courageux, à grimper la pente qui mène au sommet et offre une vue imprenable sur les paysages alentours.

Day 127 of 400...spinning around the world. We spent the day walking the quaint town of Arcachon, France...and finished the afternoon climbing the big sand dune of Pilat.
Great Moving Dune of Pyla, France, Largest Sand Dune in Europe
The Dune of Pyla has the most amazing view of the Atlantic Coast and the Bay of Arcachon. Pyla or rather the original Pilat is a Gascon word meaning a heap. The site has now been organised with parking (4 Euros) and thankfully for most a staircase to ascend the Dune.
Take a picnic to eat on top. Only the fit should consider descending the far side of the Dune down to a small beach not so much for the descent as the ascent afterwards! Note all the sporting activities including Hang Gliding. There is a special place when people can run and tumble down the side of the Dune.
This is one of the most glorious places to be on earth you have a view of Cap Ferret which is the peninsula opposite , the Bay of Arcachon, (Bassin d'Arcachon) , the little islands you can see come and go with the tides and are called the Banc d'Arguin. You will see many boats moor here for a picnic. But remember the waters of the Bay of Arcachon meet the Atlantic here and are very dangerous even for experienced sailors. Only swim where there are lifeguards.
The Dune of Pyla is close to Arcachon but do not enter this town use instead the fast road which bypasses Arcachon . Arcachon is worth a visit of course but its traffic system is designed to hamper through traffic.
You may also be able to see WW2 pillboxes from the Atlantic Wall though many of these are gradually slipping into the sea.
The Dune is gradually moving and has already swallowed up homes and a few small roads.
