The Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City | BEIJING
Beijing is home to some of China's most incredible treasures and ancient historical sites. Most famously, The Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City aka Palace Museum. As Kiwi Asians this was something we (and our family) always wanted to see in person in order to connect more with our Chinese roots.
Beijing accommodation is expensive especially when looking for a place that could fit all 6 of us. But after spending a fair bit of time looking for accommodation in Beijing, we ended up renting out an old, traditional Hutong in Beijing, China.
For our first family adventure in Beijing we went to visit the most famous and iconic Chinese landmark, The Great Wall of China.
The Great Wall of China is one of those must-visit and life bucket list items of many people including us so it was incredible to be able to finally visit it during our Beijing, China trip with our parents.
We entered The Great Wall of China from:
Mutianyu Great Wall Scenic Area Ticket Office
Address: Mutianyu Rd, Huairou, Beijing, China
If you're wondering what's the best way to see the Great Wall or what section to visit, Mutianyu (where we went) is supposed to be the less touristy and crowded of the entrances to the Great Wall in Beijing so although it was a bit further to travel we thought it was the better option as crowds in China are next level!
When we reached the The Great Wall of China, we walked from watch tower 6 to watch tower 1. Finally getting to see let alone walk along The Great Wall of China was a special and amazing experience for us. So much Chinese history and what an astounding feat of human engineering. We were fortunate to have clear blue skies in Beijing that day so we could see The Great Wall of China stretch on as far as our eyes could see.
After our time visiting The Great Wall of China we then travelled to the very scenic and beautiful Sacred Path also known as Sacred Way or Sacred Road in Beijing.
The Sacred Path of the Ming Tombs was a very peaceful and beautiful stretch of walkway. It's a great place to visit when in Beijing for its historical and scenic beauty.

Beijing is also famous for Peking duck. We found the place where the delicious Peking duck dish was apparently first invented and ate there for dinner.

The next day we woke up bright and early to visit Tiananmen Square which is very near the Imperial City and Forbidden City (now known as Palace Museum). When visiting Tiananmen Square's be prepared to see a huge amount of tourists there. Also at Tiananmen Square though, we saw various architectural highlights like the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong and the Great Hall of the People as we made our way over to the Imperial City and Forbidden City (Palace Museum).
The Palace Museum / The Forbidden City:
Address: 4 Jingshan Front St, Dongcheng, Beijing, China, 100009
Going inside The Forbidden City is definitely a top thing to do in Beijing. The Forbidden City (Palace Museum) is without a doubt a top attraction and must visit in Beijing. The Forbidden City lies in the centre of the Imperial City in Beijing, China but just remember to look out for signs for the Palace Museum as you actually won't see anything saying Forbidden City.
It was amazing getting to explore this absolutely massive complex. Our whole family had the most incredible time in Beijing. Beijing with its many famous and top attractions is a must visit when in China. Getting to see The Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City with our own eyes was an unforgettable experience and one that we feel blessed to have gotten to share with our parents especially given our Chinese roots.

Poppy and I avoided the crowded, touristy areas of the wall and instead stayed with a local couple. Here, you can see the wall stretching into the distance for miles and miles and miles - with absolutely no one in sight - just me, Poppy, and our guide.

Guide to the famous 'Great wall'. The Great Wall stretches over approximately 6,400 km (4,000 miles) from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia, but stretches to over 6,700 km (4,160 miles) in total. At its peak, the Ming Wall was guarded by more than one million men. It has been estimated that somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 million Chinese died as part of the centuries-long project of building the wall.

Great Wall:
The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe with an eye to expansion. Several walls were being built from as early as the 7th century BC; these were later joined together and made bigger by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains. Later on, many successive dynasties have repaired, maintained, and newly built multiple stretches of border walls. The most well-known of the walls were built during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
Apart from defense, other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration. Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the fact that the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor.
The frontier walls built by different dynasties have multiple courses. Collectively, they stretch from Dandong in the east to Lop Lake in the west, from present-day Sino-Russian border in the north to Qinghai in the south; along an arc that roughly delineates the edge of Mongolian steppe. A comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has concluded that the walls built by the Ming dynasty measure 8,850 km (5,500 mi).[4] This is made up of 6,259 km (3,889 mi) sections of actual wall, 359 km (223 mi) of trenches and 2,232 km (1,387 mi) of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers. Another archaeological survey found that the entire wall with all of its branches measures out to be 21,196 km (13,171 mi). Today, the Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history.
Terracotta Army:
The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE with the purpose of protecting the emperor in his afterlife.
The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians.
Forbidden City:
The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. The former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty (the years 1420 to 1912), it now houses the Palace Museum. The Forbidden City served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 hectares (over 180 acres). The palace exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Part of the museum's former collection is now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Both museums descend from the same institution, but were split after the Chinese Civil War. Since 2012, the Forbidden City has seen an average of 15 million visitors annually, and received more than 16 million visitors in 2016 and 2017.

First trip to the Great Wall of China in Beijing
Hi Everyone,
Hope you enjoy this short video of our tour to the Great Wall of China. We had an awesome time. Yes, it was hot but you didn't really notice because your so busy enjoying the scenery.
As you can see the steps were very steep so unfortunately we didn't get to make it up to the top. We thought it would be too dangerous to take our girls up and down. You better believe if we didn't have the children we would have hiked all the way up to the top.
So, after hanging out on the steps we made our way down to the square and waited for our Groupon tour group to meet us. Once everyone made it down we jumped on the bus and headed out to get lunch (which was delicious).

The Great Wall and The Summer Palace in Beijing China
Today we headed out of Beijing with our tour guide Peter to see the Great Wall and then back to the city for the Summer Palace. Both locations were beautiful. We liked the slide down the great wall the best.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.3 billion. Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometres, the East Asian state is the world's second-largest country by land area, and the third- or fourth-largest in total area, depending on the definition of total area.
The People's Republic of China is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of China. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four directly controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). Its capital city is Beijing

Even ancient wonders have a wild side.
When you are standing on The Great Wall of China, wonderment is a complete understatement. Spanning over 13,000 miles, this ancient fortification winds across the land with complete disregard for natural obstacles and the dramatic landscape. Mountains, valleys, cherry blossoms, cliffs, clouds of mist and even snow all serve as natural accents to this once northern barrier of Mongols.
A very visible historic and cultural marker, it is a perennial top global tourist destination. The part of the Wall that most people see has actually been refurbished and renovated to support commercial tourism (read: cable cars, tee shirts and group tour flags). However, for the more adventurous travelers, parts known as the “Wild Wall” still exist. Getting there requires the road less traveled and an appreciation for sections of the original wall now deteriorated into complete mounds of rubble from weather exposure and looters throughout the ages.
Fair disclaimer when venturing off the beaten path: enter at your own risk and carry cash for local “entrance” fees. The “wild” and variable nature of the wall is no joke and not for the faint of heart.

Great Wall of China, Beijing, Badaling 2016, Great Wall Tours, Chinese Name: 长城/万里长城
The Great Wall, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, it winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 13,170 miles (21,196 kilometers) from east to west of China.
With a history of more than 2,000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.

Profile of Badaling Great Wall
Badaling Great WallBeing the ancient military defence project, Great Wall is symbol and proud of China.
It is convenient to visit Great Wall from Beijing. There are many sections of Great Wall around Beijing city. Badaling Great Wall is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall partly because it is close to Beijing city and connected with urban area by expressway.
This section of wall is the first section opened to tourists (in 1957) after reconstructed. Badaling Great Wall shows the Great Wall as it would have looked originally, and it does not look too new. That is another reason of why most travelers choose Badaling Great Wall.
There is a Great Wall Museum and Great Wall National Theater close to Badaling Great Wall. The theater offers you a chance to get a full view of the Great Wall of China.
