Green River Mammoth Cave
One of the many caves at Mammoth Cave National Park located in central Kentucky. The Green River dissects the park and is a unique place to paddle, hike, camp, etc. This particular cave allows you to paddle into it at normal water levels.
An Unexpected Ferry Ride In the Mammoth Cave National Park: Green River
An Unexpected Ferry In the Mammoth Cave National Park - We just wanted to get to the scenic drive within the national park and we came up to a road which ended in water! And then finally figured out that we have to take a ferry to cross the street (basically). The Green River flows through it. Very cool experience and a total surprise.
We have never been in a ferry which can only fit 2 cars. We have been in much bigger barges but not these small ones. However, I know the road is within the national park, but I think it is also used my locals to get to the next county. I think taking the ferry is the fastest way. It is managed by the National Park Service.
After the crossing the Green river ferry (for the first time), we drove on the one-way scenic drive. The leaves were still golden brown from the winter. Although, I think the roads weren't well maintained. There were many potholes that needs repair, so if you guys are going here, better have a good car :-). This scenic drive takes you around the forest within the national park. While driving, think how the longest cave in the world is under you.
Mammoth Cave has over 400 miles of explored tunnels and researchers, rangers and scientists are still exploring. They estimate there is really approximately 600 miles of caves down there. Wow.
After going to the north side of the park and the scenic drive, we went back to the Green River ferry station, so we can ride it back. This time, we knew what to do :-). It is open until 10pm.
Green River Ferry is the only operational ferry in all of Edmonson County after Houchin's Ferry went out of service in October 2013.
WHO ARE WE?
We, Irwin and Victorina, have decided to quit our jobs, sell everything we have and go on an epic road trip of visiting all U.S. National Parks! Follow our journey - from letting go of our material possessions, preparing for the extended camping trip, and even the mistakes, joys, doubts and adventures we make along the way! We hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of Planet Earth.
Adventure begins in Feb 2017. We estimate this road trip will take us approximately 12 to 16 months. We know we will some amazing places and meet a lot of interesting people.
If you have an idea or suggestions for us for places to visit along the way, feel free to contact us!
NEW VIDEOS every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If we miss a day, it is probably because we had no phone signal inside the park or we couldn't find any wifi access. If this is the case, we will upload our video as soon as we get any phone signal.

Green River Trip, July 13-15, 2017
Our group paddled 38 miles in a record 2 days along Green River in Kentucky. We began our journey at the put-in at Munfordville, KY and took out at Houchin's Ferry inside Mammoth Caves National Park. Wildlife seen: multiple turtles, beavers, deer, and plenty of fish.
As a heads up to any potential kayakers and canoers after 2017: The lock and dam #6 near Brownsville, KY has been removed. Expect the last 10 miles to be roughly 6-9 feet lower than ever before. Also expect until the campground at Houchin's Ferry figures something out to climb roughly 10 feet in a foot of silty, stinky mud to the old concrete ramp pad. Bring rope to pull your canoe/kayak out of the river, and use the two water spigots at the camp ground to rinse off all the mud!

Seven days exploring Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Other than having the longest underground cave system in the world (400 miles!), there are also great hiking trails with backcountry camping, canoeing on the Green River where you can camp anywhere on the floodplain, and some great bike trails. Talk about having something for everyone!

Mammoth Cave National Park in Cave City, Kentucky - A Video Tour
In a recent trip to the state of Kentucky, my friend Jonathan and I decided to explore the Mammoth Cave which can be found in Cave City, Kentucky. Mammoth cave is part of the National Park Service of the US Department of the Interior. From the park brochure, it mentioned that that Mammoth Cave is about 85 miles from both Louisville, KY, and Nashville, TN. The park is in the Central Time Zone. Airports and car rentals are in Nashville, Louisville, and Bowling Green. #LifeWellTravelled #MammothCave #Kentucky

Shelly S.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Not just for bat lovers
I went to Mammoth Cave National Park the first time as a child with my family in the 70’s. I took my children to Mammoth in the 90’s. And I have lived within 45 minutes of Mammoth for the last 10 years. The only time during the last 10 years I was not at the Park at least monthly was during my deployment and when the government shutdown in 2013.
In all that time I have visited the cave maybe 10 times. Spelunking was the most exhilarating visit. Make sure you check out the tour offerings online ( well before your visit and reserve a place. If you wait until your visit you will probably have a hard time getting past the cathedral.
All the other visits were spent enjoying all the other things there are to do at Mammoth.
First and foremost is the camping. Mammoth has a campground adjacent to the Visitors Center which is basic except for two sites. There are reservable as well as walk up sites. A store, showerhouse, laundry and post office are co-located at the front of the campground and there are toilet facilities in the campground. I used the access points in the campground to hike some of the trails and walk to the visitors center.
An aspect that I have just recently started exploring are the several dispersed camp sites throughout the park. These are free but you must check in at the Lodge before hiking to them. A good , waterproof map is key.
In addition at Maple Springs on the far side of the Green River Ferry ( yes, there is a cool little two car ferry) is the Maple Springs horse and group site camping area. Nice basic, shaded area with trailheads in the area.
Now that you have found your home for your stay what to do?
Kayaking/watercraft, fishing: several companies work the Green River. If you brought your own craft they will usually meet you at the Green River Ferry parking area and transport you up river for a nominal fee. Check ahead at least a day...
