Lukomir Highland Village - Bosnia and Herzegovina

We were excited to get out of the hustle and bustle of Sarajevo and join Green Visions for a hiking adventure to Lukomir, the traditional village in the highlands of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Along the way, we saw beautiful views, a village that has stood the test of time, and a few four-footed creatures!
Click the link above to read more about our journey. We stood on the edge of a cliff, walked barefoot across an icy river, had a delicious Balkan picnic lunch, and learned a little bit about a self-sustained culture against the beautiful and rugged background of the Dinaric Mountains.

BOSNIA: HOLY PLACE ATTRACTS PILGRIMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
English/Nat
Catholics from all corners of the world have congregated on a rocky hilltop in Bosnia to pray and pay homage to the Virgin Mary.
This site has become a holy place for many Catholics ever since six teenagers from the village of Medjugorje claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary more than ten years ago.
This rocky hilltop in south western Bosnia attracts pilgrims from around the world.
In 1981 six teenagers from the nearby village of Medjugorje claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary on this site. Since then the hill has become a Mecca for Catholic pilgrims.
Local people were joined by French and Italian tourists at a prayer service on Christmas Eve in honour of the Virgin.
Mirjana Dragicevic is one of the teenagers who claim to have seen the apparition. She says she still has visions - twice a month on her birthday.
SOUNDBITE (English)
I was down below, not here, with my friend Ivanka. And we saw one lady in a long green dress taking baby in hand.

She says the Virgin Mary warned her of the bitter war that would come to Yugoslavia.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
In '81 Father Peter said to me that I, can I ask Blessed Mary, will Croatia ever be free? I did not understand the question because I lived in Yugoslavia. But I asked because one priest to asked me to . And blessed Mary said yes, but with war.

A strip of tourist shops has been built near the sacred hill, selling every kind of Virgin Mary trinket imaginable, from rosaries to T-shirts to psychedelic portraits.
In Medjugorje itself a new cathedral has been built for the throngs of pilgrims who come on major religious holidays.
The congregation celebrated a solemn midnight mass on Christmas Eve, not forgetting the war that's ravaged their country.

Western Balkans Webinar Series (#4): The Advantages & Challenges of Network Membership
When tourism operators join forces to create official networks—overlooking petty competition and cutthroat tactics to advance an entire region—the ultimate winner is the traveler. Networks serve to codify standards, promote quality, and thrive on the philosophy that a rising tide raises all boats. The advantages of such cooperatives are numerous. Challenges exist as well.
For this session in the Western Balkans Adventure Travel Webinar Series, we’ll speak with two travel-professional veterans about the positives and the pitfalls of these tourism collaborations. Jack Delf is the chair of the Western Balkans Geotourism Network and owner of Black Mountain, a Montenegro-based adventure tourism company. Thierry Joubert is a founding member of the Via Dinarica Alliance and the director of Green Visions, a Bosnia and Herzegovina-based operator with 17 years of experience in the Balkans. Alex Crevar, who has covered the Balkans (The New York Times and National Geographic Traveler) as a travel journalist for 20 years, moderates the series and tackles topics of interest to the adventure travel industry—for both professionals and travelers.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a lot to offer. Still under the radar of most tourists it is still a hidden gem in the heart of Europe. Take your time to enjoy and learn more about this Balkan country. It is definitely a country worth exploring. Best cities to go to are Mostar and Sarajevo. Tuzla is also a nice stop-over.

EU-Programme Youth in Action -- Project implementation
Belgrade, Vilnius, Sarajevo, Chemnitz and Budapest -- 25 young and motivated workshop participants from five different cities came together to discuss problems, developments and future opportunities for Belgrade's much neglected city quarter Savamala. What is special about this district and how can Savamala be a model for other cities like the ones they are coming from?
Self-made music instruments and first aid kits against traffic noise, a living room outside at the River bank for a warm ambience at exceptional places - within six days, the Youth in Action-group developed own creative ideas. Their exchange of views, perspectives and ideas resulted in various, multi-faceted projects.
All of these ideas highlighted the hidden potential of Savamala and even engaged some of the residents and raised the awareness of the many different facets a city quarter has. A Museum of Sounds, signposting for small Exhibitions, or creating an outdoor home -- small actions only brought home very impressively the idea that a sense of home can be developed everywhere, and that seems to be especially important in such a neglected city part as Savamala.
© Goethe-Institut Video made by: Mr. Sava Sajko, producer.
English transcript of the video:
Within the framework of the the EU-programme Youth in Action, students and members of the Goethe-Guerilla from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania and Serbia focus on the creative actions and interventions with the aim of revitalizing this rather neglected Belgrade neighbourhood.
The participants use Savamala and the project Urban Incubator: Belgrade as a model for discussing questions and issues that are relevant and specific to the future of the cities from which they come, and, through the exchange of ideas, they identify similarities and differences and improve their own perspectives for joint creative interaction.
Taking advantage of opportunities and possibilities, means to communicate. The exchange of words and ideas between people is only one part of that process, the other one is direct interaction with the environment. This may imply alienation, which among other things, can be avoided - for example this way . . ..
Come out, come in, move, see, think, create ...
Personal experience of Savamala is very often dominated by the perception of heavy noise pollution produced by heavy trucks engines. Savamala residents know this the best. For their ears, first aid is coming directly from the workshop....
Then a little bit more of noise and sound overruling, in order vehicles sound to be produced with an actually melodious effect...
Exchange of knowledge among local connoisseurs and young people, who in this city quarter meet for the first time, becomes an important starting point, both for future joint activities in Savamala, and for a new perspective of Belgrade Guerrillas.
