Hike with me to Ramsey Cascades, Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
Come along on an 8 mile roundtrip hike to Ramsey Cascades near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. As you can tell from previous videos I love the Smoky Mountains. Take hwy 321 from Gatlinburg toward Greenbrier and turn right at the Greenbrier exit toward the Ramsey Cascades trailhead. It is a curvy, unpaved road. There is a picnic area. That might be a good place to stop for some rest after the hike. Start having fun and enjoy this beautiful part of the country.

The kids were so intense about this campground game. There was certainly a sense of community among the kids at the Greenbriar.

▶︎ Ranger Review: Warm Eats on Cold Days at the Greenbriar
The Greenbriar Campground was the Cadillac of campgrounds in the area, unfortunately we arrived on a weekend that would have been better suited to the “pontoon boat” of campgrounds.
Greenbriar ( is located near the Greenbriar entrance of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, very near the arts and crafts district of Gatlinburg. Access to the facility is by a small bridge that runs over the Little Pigeon River, which splits and runs around the Greenbriar, making it an island of sorts. This is notable as nearly every campsite backs up to the river. There are a handful of internal tent sites and rentable cabins as well. But the vast majority of sites have river access, including a fire pit mounted in the rocks RIGHT ON the river. Imagine yourself peacefully sitting out under the stars, mountain peaks in view, the rush of the Little Pigeon, illuminated by the fire directly in front of you. Though the water fluctuates with rainfall quite a bit, you can always hear it from your tent or RV, which was an added bonus. During warmer months, children can play and swim in the clear and smooth stoned river. There’s also an historic swimming hole on location. Several campers even had hammocks set up between trees that hung over the water on their sites.
Sites are narrow and fairly close together, although they’ve done an excellent job of maintaining the heavy trees around the river and on the “treelawn” area which separates each site. This helps to make a narrow space seem deceptively private. These sites also come equipped with water, sewer and electric hook ups, and even a cable hookup! A newer and clean picnic table is also provided. They designate those few interior sites as “tent” - not that you cannot reserve the other sites with a tent, but because the internal sites have soft, level grass to pitch on, whereas the outlying ones have level pea gravel across the entire site. Ample space is provided for your car to park at the edge of ...

Elkmont Campground - The Great Smokey Mountains National Park Video
Elkmont Campground has 200 tent / RV campsites with paved driveways, gravel tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Although most sites will accommodate tents or RVs, extreme slope or length of driveway make certain sites more suitable for tents than RVs. Please check the descriptions and measurements of individual sites.
In addition to these tent / RV sites, Elkmont has 20 walk-in sites for tents. Campers on these beautiful wooded sites will have a short walk from their parking area to their tent pad.
Nine of Elkmont's campsites are wheelchair accessible ADA sites. These sites have wide concrete driveways, raised fire rings, and wheelchair accessible picnic tables. All of these sites are located near accessible restrooms. Three of the sites provide 5 amp electrical service for medical equipment.
Restrooms at Elkmont Campground have flush toilets, cold running water, and utility sinks. Potable water is available at spigots near each restroom; use of hoses is not allowed. Elkmont Campground does not have electric, water, or sewer hook-ups. RV campers are encouraged to use the dump station across from Sugarlands Visitor Center, as there is no dump station in the campground.
Elkmont is strictly an overnight campground; there are no day-use facilities. The nearest picnic area is Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area, west of Elkmont on Little River Road.
Due to its central location and variety of amenities, Elkmont Campground tends to be heavily used during the summer vacation months and in October. Sites along Little River are in particularly high demand. Even when Elkmont is full, campsites are often available at Cosby Campground, located at the northeast corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Water levels at peak after heavy rains this weekend. But resulted in beautiful rapids of clear water from the mountains!

Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains
Newfound Gap (5,046') is the highest point along U.S. Highway 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From the parking area at Newfound Gap, you can stand on the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee or take a stroll on the Appalachian Trial, and enjoy scenic views from the large parking area or atop the Rockefeller Memorial.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park (East of Townsend, Tn.)
Little River is a river in Tennessee which drains a 380-square-mile (980 km2) area containing some of the most spectacular scenery in the southeastern United States. The first 18 miles (29 km) of the river are all located within the borders of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The remaining 33 miles (53 km) flow out of the mountains through Blount County to join the Tennessee River at Stock Creek and Fort Loudon Lake in Knox County.
From just below Elkmont, the Little River runs parallel to State Route 73, also known as Little River Road, which connects the two major Tennessee entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: those in Gatlinburg and Townsend. The stream, like the road that follows it, is quite sinuous. The road is built on the bed of the Little River Railroad that was used for logging purposes prior to the establishment of the park.
Little River at Metcalf Bottoms
Along the course of Little River are several small waterfalls which feed into the river, which especially strong during wet weather. One waterfall, Meigs Falls, is visible from the road and is provided with a parking turnout. Additionally, there are parking turnouts for trails leading to numerous places. About midway between Gatlinburg and Townsend, Little River enters a relatively flat area known as Metcalf Bottoms, which developed along an oasis of soft phyllite amidst the more predominant sandstone. The park service has established a picnic area at Metcalf Bottoms, providing an attractive area for summer picnics and wading.
Just past Metcalf Bottoms, Little River becomes more rapid and volatile as it slices through Little River Gorge, a narrow valley between Round Top Mountain and Curry She Mountain. Among the gorge's more notable landmarks is an area known as The Sinks. The Sinks is where the river flows over a ten foot (three meters) waterfall into a large pool, and then seems to disappear for a small distance. (Unlike streams in a limestone area, which may actually sink for a considerable distance, this is more a question of appearance than of the stream truly sinking, which is not feasible in this area of ancient Precambrian metamorphic rock.) Below the Sinks, Little River is navigable in high water with a canoe or kayak.

Heintooga Overlook Picnic Area.
Yeah, I never thought I'd be doing a video of a picnic area! This was actually my first trip to the Balsam Campground, the highest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nothing at all like the campgrounds in the lower elevations of the Great Smoky Mountain NP.
One thing that struck me about the campground and area was how quiet it was. I was not expecting that on a Memorial Day weekend when so many people can afford the leisure time to go hiking and camping. But there I was in this picnic area completely alone. Not another human on a Saturday afternoon!
Carole and I are hoping to go back to camp there. Maybe this summer.
At the end of the paved road is the one-way gravel track leading down toward Cherokee. Once you commit to that drive it is 28 miles one-way to the terminus. I've been along that road a couple of times on backpacking trips, but I've never driven it. A video for another day.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. It is the most visited national park in the United States. On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. The park was chartered by the United States Congress in 1934 and officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940. It encompasses 522,419 acres (816.28 sq mi; 2,114.15 km2), making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina. It was the first national park whose land and other costs were paid for in part with federal funds; previous parks were funded wholly with state money or private funds.
