Hiking the Greenstone: Isle Royale National Park
A short video showing highlights of the 47 miles hiked on the Greenstone Ridge trail. The trail is located on the island National Park: Isle Royale. Located in the remote icy waters of Lake Superior, the island can only be accessed by ferry or seaplane. The isolation of the park makes it one of the least visited National Parks in the United States, but the unique beauty and solitude makes it the most revisited parks! Perfect for two adventurous newlyweds on their honeymoon!

The Greenstone Ridge Trail, Isle Royale - Day 4
Day 4 - I hike from Hatchet Lake to Island Mine on Isle Royale.
This is my big day for the trip doing over 20 km which is no world record but not bad for a 44 year old with a quirky knee.
More beautiful trail along the way with increasing species diversity as I hike further South and West with increasingly deeper and richer soils.
I get concerned about staying at a buggy campsite but then find a 'fire ring' which is permission for me to make fire and hence smoke which provides great comfort on a buggy June evening.
Sorry for the lack of perspective shots of the trail, but this was my day to make miles and not play with the camera.

The Greenstone Ridge Trail, Isle Royale - Day 1
My solo backpacking trip along the Greenstone Ridge Trail on Isle Royale.
The trip began with a ferry ride on the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage, Minnesota. The ferry arrives at Windigo on the west end of Isle Royale. The ferry then travels around the north shore of the island and finishes at Rock Harbor on the south east end of the Island. From Grand Portage it takes nearly the whole day to travel to Rock Harbor. The next day I took a water taxi to Hidden Lake.

Isle Royale Greenstone Facts:
They were considered valuable because of their ability to refract light and were used as either decoration or as talismans - for protection and warding against evil. During the Dark Ages, Greenstones were believed to hold medicinal value. Some even believed that ingesting Greenstones could assist in recovery (and even a cure) from various illnesses.
They are very rare. Coloured Greenstones command huge prices and are highly prized by collectors. Greenstones are said to be symbols of wealth, status and timeless love; however, there are Greenstones that spell anarchy, bloodshed and genocide. These are the 'conflict Greenstones ' that have become synonymous with the killing fields of the African continent.
Some Greenstones get washed away either by erosion or by nearby water bodies, and are thus found near river beds. They are known as alluvial deposits. Millions of years of erosion spread Greenstones into streams, rivers and the seas. Many centuries ago, Greenstones were first recognized and mined in India along the rivers Penner, Krishna and Godavari. Natural Greenstone sources have been discovered in 35 countries all across the world. Russia, Botswana and South Africa are the major gem quality Greenstone producers in the world. Australia is one of the world's biggest industrial Greenstone producer. Each cut has it's own splendid brilliance and is really a personal preference.
While they are not necessarily more valuable than other Greenstones they have been thoroughly authenticated versus non-certified dimaonds that have unknown backgrounds. The Gemologcial Institute of America is bowed down to by all others in the Greenstone industry. There are many types of simulated Greenstones , these types vary according to the character and the material used for their production. The bigger the carat, the higher the price and the better the cut, more the price and so on. These days simulated
Greenstones wedding sets and simulated Greenstone earrings are very popular. Only an expert's eye can decipher the difference between the two. In fact, some American Greenstones can't be distinguished by electronic Greenstone scales.
Greenstones are weighed to a thousandth (.of a carat, and then rounded to the nearest hundredth, or point. A Greenstone weighing 50 points is called 1/2 carat; one that weighs 75 points is called 3/4 carat. Greenstones weighing more than one carat are measured in carats, plus two decimal places for the points. Greenstones are found in many colors. The white (or colorless) ones are the most common variety. However, Greenstones are available in almost every color of the rainbow too - yellow, pink, green, purple, black, blue, red, gray and brown. Red Greenstones are among the rarest. But what we'll be focusing on here are the brown ones.
The first method is when a foreign constituent is introduced in the carbon material that a Greenstone is made from. More often nitrogen can cause a Greenstone to have yellow or orange hues, while boron can make it blue in color. The next method is when pressure compresses the carbon and creates a red, pink, or purple hue. It is hard to sometimes think of Greenstones in their rough form, such as when they first arrive at the sorting centers from the Greenstone mines. However, Greenstones are not what they appear to be at the jewelry store. They have an origin and a unique process of being developed, whether by nature or in a lab-created atmosphere.
