Port Austin Michigan Area 1837-1957
This visual history documentary tells the story of the Port Austin village at the tip of the thumb and the early days of Port Crescent. The area has an Indian history, picturesque shorelines and early tourism to add to its legacy. Huron City, a lumber town, was also the summer home of Dr. Phelps and the Hubbard Families, now a historic site and museum. Lighthouses and Turnip Rock at Point Aux Barques are included in this history. This is a preview of the full length DVD or VHS video available at michiganhistoryvideos.com .

912 The Barn Project Port Austin
UTR
Grindstone City - waves washing over old grindstones.
This was shot near the tip of Michigan's thumb at the end of the old storage pier where the finished grindstones were stored until being shipped out to fill orders. Once carborundum came along, the orders dried up and eventually the surplus stones were used to secure the shoreline from encroaching waves.

Huron City Michigan 150 Year History
Huron City, located at the tip of the thumb was founded in 1853. The founder established a thriving lumber town, including mill operations, general store, church, school, baseball team, roller rink, plus houses and barns. At the turn of the century, Professor William Phelps, drew large crowds to the Huron City Church. —————
Watching the sun come up over Lake Michigan
Letting the morning train drag me away
Hard to believe that we’re doing this again
Hard to believe I didn’t come here to stay
Hard to believe you’re sending me back west, but easy to see
Why you don’t need me wearing you down
Grindstone
Love’s down to powder and sawdust and grit
I’d like to call but there’s nothing left to say
And I never meant to take advantage of you like I did
The wind picked up and carried all away
Grindstone
(Love falls out every day)
(I just missed it)
