Lot 601 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
An excellent example of alluvial benchland Cabernet, starting with dusty plum notes (“Rutherford Dust,” anyone?), pretty acacia flower, and cherry/blackcurrant/blackberry fruit. With just a little bit of air, it blooms a gorgeous perfume of sweet, spicy florals, rich plum, and electric cherry and blackcurrant notes all riding a gravelly spine. Absolutely gorgeous and notable for its bright, well defined fruit. On the palate it’s densely textured, yet juicy and energetic with chocolatey plum, cherry, blackcurrant and black pepper notes suavely fleshed out in a long, sweeping finish that foretells of much more to come. The oak integration here is perfect, and while the wine is beautiful now, it definitely benefits from air and will drink much better than the 2013s did this time last year. The 2014s are amply built with energetic fruit, freshness and approachability, with exciting down the road potential.
The first release of our exciting Fall Cabernet Countdown starts with Lot 601, sourced from the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Oak Knoll matters most when you get into the northwest corner of the appellation, where you’ll same volcanically derived, stony, gravelly, alluvial fanned creek drainages that comprise the Oakville and Rutherford benches between Highway 29 and the Mayacamas Mountains. In fact, I would argue this area of Oak Knoll is really an extension of the Rutherford/Oakville/Yountville benches west of Highway 29, just a couple degree-days cooler. Lot 601 comes from an estate vineyard in the northwest corner of Oak Knoll (near the estate vineyards for Trefethen, Groth, Beckstoffer and Shiflett) and directly from the source winery’s $90+ Reserve program.
Franciscan Estate - Devotion to Wines of True Character
For over 35 years there has been a select group of winemakers in the Napa Valley who have been pioneering the craft of fine winemaking. One of the founding members of this lineage established pristine vineyards in Oakville, and focused on the meticulous principles of small-lot winemaking and his unwavering pursuit to capture the supreme expression of the land. Franciscan Estate was established in 1973 and began producing wines of true character from our Oakville estate in 1975. At Franciscan Estate, we only use grapes of the highest quality worthy to bear the Franciscan Estate crest. We strive to create wines of the highest character and excellence in every vintage. This is what devotion to wines of true character is all about. It is in every bottle and embodied in our crest that has been a sign of excellence on our wines for over 20 years.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in Coombsville | Sciandri Family Vineyards
888 282-1353
Very excited to reintroduce Sciandri Family Vineyards in Napa Valley’s Coombsville AVA. Bringing 200 years of passion for food and wine from Italy to the United States. Sciandri’s first vintage was back in 2006, single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from their single vineyard estate. After years of growth, they now offer a blend, a rosé, estate Meritage and a Sauvignon Blanc.
All the wines are small batch, hand harvested, hand made. The artisan way. Before they decided to produce their own wines, they tasted wines made by Don Baker at a local festival, fell in love, and asked him to join their team. Don has been making wine with Sciandri Family from the beginning.
As grape growers in the late 90s, Cabernet was the only varietal grown. After getting bit by the unofficial wine bug, the family planted the other Bordeaux varietals on their estate. Three generations of family are involved in growing and producing wine.
Rebecca Sciandri says, “If you only serve good food so you can drink good wine, then you should only drink good wine so you can eat good food.”

Law Officers Fight Wine in Groceries - John Dunn
January 9, 2013
It is one of the bills generating the most buzz on Capitol Hill.
Many Tennesseans support the idea of having wine in grocery stores, but now a new group is fighting against it.
Many lawmakers feel this is the year that Tennessee moves closer to allowing wine in groceries. A group of police chiefs and sheriff's are making a public stance. They don't want the bill to pass.
Loosening up Tennessee's laws to alcohol is a bad idea, says Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch.
About 100 of the state's law enforcement officers have signed a petition opposing wine in food stores.
If this proposed legislation passes, than you're just creating a monster, says Madison Co. Sheriff David Willfork.
The officers say wine in grocery and convenience stores will lead to more DUI's, underage drinking, and domestic violence. For economic gain to trade off public safety is not something that we support, says Belle Meade Police Chief Tim Eads.
Another argument the chiefs make is that wine has a higher alcohol content than beer, and it shouldn't be in grocery stores.
I don't see it as as big of an issue as what they're trying to make it, says Sen. Bill Ketron, (R) Murfreesboro.
Senator Bill Ketron has proposed wine in groceries for years. He feels it finally has momentum. The new bill would allow referendums. Voters in each city or county would decide if they want to approve the change.
When was the last time you saw someone with a DUI driving with a glass of chardonnay and some cheese on the front seat, says Sen. Ketron.
Grocery stores are also fighting for the change with a campaign called Red White and Food.
Absolutely zero correlation between wine being on a food store shelf, and any information that available that shows that there's alcohol related crimes, says Tennessee Grocers Convenience Store Association President Jarron Springer.
The fight over wine is just beginning and law officers are the latest to join.
It's not going to help public safety, it's not going to help our society, it's not going to help Tennessee, says Chief David Rausch.
Recent polls by Vanderbilt and MTSU have shown that more than 60% of Tennesseans support wine in groceries. Liquor store owners are fighting hard against the change, saying it will kill jobs, and close businesses.
