Portland Travel Vlog 2013 (Part 1/2) - Vlog #15 - LIFE OF BRI
This is the first part of my 2013 trip to Portland, Oregon. We left Vancouver, BC and drove straight to down to Portland, Oregon for the weekend braving relentless fog on the highway. We did a pit stop at Subway and Fred Meyers and arrived in Portland downtown around 12am. The night was still young so we headed to straight to Ground Kontrol, an arcade and bar, recognized as one of the best arcades in the United States with a plethora of retro video games and pinball machines. We got our game and drink on and then got back to the hotel to get ready for the next few days of shopping, nightlife, and food.

Portland's Park Blocks: Are We Ready?
Presented on June 16, 2000
Fred Kent, president, Project for Public Spaces, New York City
Portland has always been a few steps ahead of the times. Even in our city's infancy, the contemporary concept of livability was a principal concern. Portland founders understood the importance of vibrant public spaces, and they outlined plans for a strip of park blocks, an urban oasis that would span downtown from south to north. Unfortunately, Portland, like other cities across the country, learned a valuable lesson too late: economics moves faster than vision. Over 150 years of downtown development replaced the dream of tree-lined commons with the reality of towering buildings. Though discussion about returning to Portland's original plan remains dynamic, action has been fairly static. Are we ready for a significant commitment to our park blocks?
One only need look to the current park blocks to know that simply providing an open space in the center of a city does not automatically generate an actively-used, vital public park. The development of such a space, ideally, requires four key ingredients: community ideas, public space design that supports a program, a management group in charge, and active public uses in adjacent buildings. How can Portland translate these four components into specific recommendations for both its current and future park blocks?
Project for Public Spaces (PPS) is widely recognized for its success in revitalizing problematic public parks. This week Fred Kent, president of PPS, visits Portland to attend the 2000 Oregon Livability Conference. On Friday, Kent addresses City Club, and describes the problems facing Portland's park blocks, explaining how they can contribute to the safety, stability, and vitality of the downtown neighborhood.

Polybius Video Game and Charlie No Face
Tales of hauntings, murder and scary mysteries. Every week Twisted Two's dives into a pair of uniquely terrifying true stories that are worthy of a more in depth look.
For this week, we focus on a creepy old school video game and the curious case of Charlie No Face. Get ready for Scary Mysteries, Twisted Two’s.
#1 Polybius Video Game
It’s a video game that kills. A tool used by the government for mind control - a mysterious game that doesn’t seem to exist.
For a short time in 1981, a mysterious cabinet game landed in Portland, Oregon. The seemingly ordinary arcade console was called Polybius. With its bright green and yellow retro ballon sign and ordinary black cabinet with red joystick, it looked like any other game in the arcade. But those who played it, swear there’s something seriously strange going on.
#2 Charlie No Face
During the 1950s and 60s in Western Pennsylvania, rumours of an unusual sighting on Route 351 lingered in the area - these rumours centered on a man with no face who was said to stalk the streets.
The man in question is Raymond Robinson. At 8 years old, he was reaching for a bird’s nest at the top of an electric pole. But instead of touching the bird’s nest, he accidentally hit a livewire and a surge of 11,000 volts of electricity sent him flying to the ground. Within seconds, the shock burned through his eyes and nose and cost him one of his arms.
