Mammoth Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill offers a Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
Mammoth Mountain is located 11,000 feet above sea level in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. This central California hideaway, located just east of Yosemite National Park, doesn't get a huge amount of play in guidebooks. But just one visit to this charming mountain village and you'll be hooked.
The Eastern Sierras are legendary for their beauty, and Mammoth is no exception. Though it's best known for its winter sports, Mammoth is just as fun when there's no snow on the ground.
At the Main Lodge Adventure Center, kids can go rock climbing, rush down a quick-moving zip line, or go mountain biking on more than 100 miles of dirt single-track.
This is also where you'll pick up the Reds Meadow Shuttle into the Ansel Adams wilderness, where you can either hike or ride on horseback to beautiful Rainbow Falls.
If you come to Mammoth during the summer, you have to take the gondola ride to the top where you can go hiking, biking and check out a great interpretive center.
At the Sierra Interpretive Center, you'll learn that Mammoth is actually part of an active volcano chain — though the chances of a major eruption are slim. While you're there, pop into the cafe where you can enjoy a sandwich and soda while gazing out at the beautiful Eastern Sierras.
Though there are several great Mammoth hotels to choose from, we always stay at the Village, an alpine resort with great restaurants, super shopping and one of the best pools in town!
The Village at Mammoth condos are right on the slopes, with daily maid service, a spacious lobby and heated swimming pool. Our family has been staying here for years, and we love its convenience to the gondola and village center. If you prefer a hotel, the Westin Mammoth is right across the street.
The Village is also home to some great Mammoth restaurants, including Lulu Mammoth Restaurant and Bar, an outlet of the famous San Francisco eatery. The Old New York Deli and Bagel Shop is a cheap and delicious place to grab breakfast. Another great dining choice is Side Door Cafe, where you can linger over a delicate crepe and glass of fine wine.
While you're there, don't miss the free red trolley rides around town. It's a great way to explore the village and nearby Mammoth Lakes, which boasts some of the best fishing in California.

Earthquake Fault, Mammoth Mountain, California
The Earthquake Fault is a popular stop for many skiers on the way to Mammoth Mountain. Although much has been written about this fault its origin remains the subject of much debate. The fissure trends north-south like many of the known faults in the Mammoth area.
Some geologists have suggested that it represents the southern extension of the Hartley Springs fault. In fact, as early as 1936 it was proposed that the west side of the fault had dropped as much as three feet.
Nonetheless, no slickensides are apparent on outcrop and the postulated offset is problematic at best. Even the suggestion of west-side down motion is inconsistent with the typical east-side down pattern of range front faulting. This has led to a suggestion that the fault is merely a fissure formed during cooling of the black, glassy, rhyolitic lava flows.
This, however, is difficult to rationalize as the Rhyodacites of Mammoth Mountain are thought to be at least 50,000 years old and a crack of this nature is almost certainly Holocene in age. A more intriguing explanation is that the crack represents the head scarp of a large landslide block or that it is a tension crack formed during warping, similar to those those at the Big Pumice Cut.
Reportedly the fault was reactivated during the 1980 Mammoth earthquake and the trail down into the fissure was closed. It is now thought the apparent motion at the bottom of the fissure resulted from settling of unconsolidated material.
Some researchers have also suggested an Indian legend about a massive earthquake that struck the area 200 years ago causing a large rift to open is evidence that this is an earthquake fault. Others state that there are numerous Indian legends and it is hard to separate fact from myth.

New Trail Day: Midtown at Mammoth Mountain California
Brand new intermediate run. The first day it opened! The ~20 hundred berms were still a bit soft. But this is going to be a fun trail at Main Lodge. In terms of difficulty, it's bridging the gap nicely between the other intermediates and the more extreme ones.

Backcountry Snowboarding Bloody Couloir and the Sherwins, Mammoth Lakes California
Bloody Couloir is a classic eastern sierra back country descent. This steep couloir creates a prominent scar in Bloody Mountain that can be seen from miles away. Driving south on HWY 395 it teases the avid skier / snowboarder from a distance. The long approach is not a light one, it is best if you can snowmobile up the road to save about 6 miles (round trip) of hiking. Once you reach the difficult summit it is a narrow ridge traverse to the couloir.
Dropping in: Assess snow conditions the entire hike up, snow in the couloir can be variable from top to bottom. Consider sluffing down the center of the couloir. Descend slowly due to variable conditions. Falls may not arrest quickly. Make good decisions.

Some days it's about the getting to the place you feel alive!
Others it quickly becomes a day about getting out in one piece with all your gear.

We hustled hard, pushed our Physical limits, pressed our mental state, and thanked the bloody for a heavy lesson in what can happen when gear fails. When steep couloirs are bare of powder and full of chop and ice. When looking down 2000' of vert and barely holding a edge you get a quick slap in da face.

Yosemite • WALKING THROUGH TREES! Giant Sequoias
Walking among (and through) the 2,000 year-old giant sequoias of the Tuolumne Grove.
Mariposa Grove, right near the south entrance to Yosemite, is closed until 2017 for rehabilitation. It really is a more impressive grove of giant sequoias. Not to take anything away from the Tuolumne Grove. It has some stunning trees, and is a great way to get up close to some of them. If you sensed any disappointment in not being able to get into the Mariposa Grove, it's because that was where I say my first giant sequoia. It was a powerful experience. Photos simply do not do the experience any justice.
Tuolumne Grove is only about 20 minutes from the Yosemite Valley, so it is a more convenient trip than the Mariposa Grove, which is about 1.5 hours from the valley. There is a 1.1 mile hike (on a paved road) into the grove. It's a gradual downhill (on the way there). Once you get into the grove, there is a network of smaller trails that take you to the various giants.
The tunnel in that you see in the video, was carved out in the 1800's as a tourist attraction. It's the first such tree to be tunneled for automobiles to pass through. The tree was over 2,000 years old (possibly 3,000) when it was tunneled. This lead to it's demise, less than a century later. As humans, we suck sometimes.
One of my favorite stories about a giant sequoia is Walter Fry. He was on a team of five men in charge of cutting down a sequoia for lumber. It took the five men five days to cut the tree down. Once it had fallen, Fry counted the rings to see how old the tree was. He was astonished to find that the tree that they had taken down in just a few days, had lived for 3,266 years. He was so moved and sickened by his act of destruction that he changed careers and became a park ranger. In 1912, he became superintendent of Sequoia National Parks, charged with protecting the things that he had ignorantly destroyed.

Driving across Sonora Pass to Mammoth California and Swimming in Mono Lake (Tufa Formations)
We are leaving Yosemite national park and are driving to Mammoth Lakes California. The original idea was to drive across Tioga pass from Yosemite to Mammoth lakes but unfortunately Tioga pass was closed due to 8ft of snow covering the road still. So we had a 4 hour de-tour to Mammoth lakes over Sonora Pass instead.
We had a few things that we wanted to see over the next 2 days one of which was Mono Lake which has rock formations called Tufa's. Tufa's are made up from a chemical reaction from the water inside Mono Lake which is two and a half times saltier than the sea. The fact Mono Lakes salt content is so high means that you will naturally float in the lake so we decided to have a little swim. Simple... Yeah right!
Mammoth is a very nice little town that operates as a Ski resort in the winter and then a summer holidays destination in the Summer months when there is no snow!
