GUANGZHOU DRIFTINGS BY CATHERINE GFELLER GUANGDONG MUSEUM OF ART, GUANGZHOU, CHINA MARCH –APRIL 2018
Photography, video sound and text installations.
In this exhibition, Guangzhou is expressed through personal visions, sensations, perceptions, thoughts of women about their own city.
In today’s chinese society the role and the voice of women are crucial.
The focus is given on a subjective interpretation of the city.
«Guangzhou Driftings» takes visitors into a sensory universe to explore the city with a new perspective. The exhibition leads them through a journey where all the senses guide them.
Visitors discover the artworks as if they were wandering through the city’s streets.
The whole city has invaded the museum’s space.
A rich variety of mediums is presented: photography, video, sound, text installations and a participative space across halls 6 and 8 of the Guangdong Museum of Art. (approx. 800 m 2.).
They all interact with one another : images on the videos in Hall 8 are echoes of the photographs presented in Hall 6, written sentences evoke a picture on the next wall, a sound piece refer to a video…
The vision of ten women intermingle: nine chinese women who and my own vision. My explorations as a foreigner and artist dialogue with the Chinese women I have interviewed and filmed in the different districts of the city.
The city is our common theme and acts as a platform of crossraods, as if we were speaking the city outloud together in a chorus. Guangzhou becomes a palimpset where many layers are combined, superimposed, constantly circulate and play together.
Guangzhou is a megalopolis and yet these « Guangzhou Driftings» enable us to develop an intimate relationship with the city.
Yuan Jing Guang (袁景光) - Live at the Guangdong Museum of Art (广东省博物馆), Guangzhou, China
Live at the Museum is a series of films in which buskers and other artists perform without permission in front of major museums around the world. The democracy of art and the use of public space are key components of this work. It is an indefinitely ongoing series and while each work stands on its own, they are interconnected through a shared distance to global cultural agendas and a quiet beauty emanating from the covert act of street performance. Live at the Museum is an investigation into the collective and institutional affirmation given to culture, while also functioning as a digital archive to cache the contribution of its participants.

Guangzhou Tianhe Info:
Tianhe District (Chinese: 天河区) is one of the eleven districts of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. In Chinese, the name Tianhe literally means a river in the sky/heavens, which is also a Chinese name for the Milky Way. It is bordered by Yuexiu District on the west, Baiyun District on the north and Huangpu District on the east. Haizhu District is on its south, though they are separated by the Pearl River.
Tianhe became a district in the 1980s as the city expanded its size. Back then, it was east of Dongshan District (which was merged into Yuexiu in 2005) and it was more suburban-like if not rural like. Even though a majority of colleges and universities in the city were located in the district, the rest of the district was mostly composed of rice fields.
Symbolic landmarks of Guangzhou located in Tianhe District are Citic Plaza, Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangzhou Opera House, and the Guangdong Museum. The 6th and 9th of The National Games of the People's Republic of China and the 2010 Asian Games were also held in Tianhe District, Guangzhou.

Hitachi Traction Elevators-Guangdong Museum of History-Guangzhou, China
This museum itself has awesome architecture! The elevators are nonetheless cool as well. I like these elevators! The indicators are awesome and the bells that go along with them. The cabs are kinduv dark but oh well. This museum has 6 elevators total but only these two are public. The 4 others are firemen's lifts and are rarely used (seems pointless to me) SF videos return tomorrow!
