Destin, Florida: A Vacation From Our RV Vacation on the Gulf of Mexico's Emerald Coast
This is the last stop on the Great American Road Trip travel vlog. We just relax for a couple of days at the Emerald Coast, frolicking in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, eat some fabulous seafood, and then drive all the way to Panama City. Here we wish we were traveling in a van because there are many place we would love to stop for a bite or just enjoy the surf.
From the blog:
We are reaching the home stretch, the end of our epic road trip. In this last installment, the idea is to take a vacation from our vacation and do something totally different. We are just going to relax in the white sand and warm waters of the Emerald Coast of Florida. This is located in the Florida panhandle, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
We are splurging in one of the most expensive and coveted RV Parks in the United States, Camp Gulf, in Destin Florida. Our two nights here will be a grand total of $445 for a beachfront site. Is it worth it? You can be the judge of that but I thoroughly enjoyed waking up a stone throw away from the water. Our time here is spent as follows: beach, beer, seafood, repeat.
Well there's a little more than that, and we did certain things line eating a freshly made Krispy Kreme, which didn't make it to the video. Why it didn't? Well I had my hands full of Krispy Kreme glaze goodness and didn't want to touch my phone.
As we begin our return trip to South Florida, we cruise along, hugging the coast all the way to Panama City. I the video you get treated to a mesmerizing time lapse as we pass by all the Gulf Coast communities. Eventually we get on the interstate and after a long, long drive we make it to the 305, the local pseudonym for Miami.

September 14, 2017: Hurricane Jose is looking more and more likely to impact the east coast. Western Mexico should see at least a CAT3 impact on Sunday/Monday.
A new storm is brewing that well out in the Atlantic and like Irma, it too is showing a direction of travel towards the lower SE US.
Just a Heads-up and stock up! Better to have it and NOT need it than to not have it and need it. Be safe out there...

Tap into Pensacola
It’s finally summer. The heat bears down on my skin. The sun rides high in the clear, blue sky, and all I really want, most days, is an ice-cold pint and a patch of grass to while the hours away.
Some other schmuck might settle for a watered-down Corona Light, but I know better. A day and place as extraordinary as this calls for something special. Luckily, Pensacola has its fair share of good brews — whether you prefer to do your mid-summer boozing in the sun or the dim light of a cozy bar.
Today, I’m setting sail for Pensacola Bay Brewery, located just steps from the live-oak-draped lawns of Olde Seville Square and within view of the brewery’s namesake body of water.
In the five years since they opened shop, founders Elliot Eckland and Mark Robertson have cranked out an impressive variety of crowd-pleasing creations, all of which pay homage to the city’s deep colonial roots. A visit to their taproom is almost like a trip to the museum — with less standing and a lot more hops.
Start with the DeLuna, a German Style Kolsch named after the Spanish conquistador who first colonized Pensacola in 1559. Then, reach for the Blackbeard Stout — my personal favorite — which harkens back to a time when pirates cruised the Gulf and — legend has it — buried their treasure along the sandy shores of Perdido Bay.
By the time you’ve sampled the brewery’s 15-odd varieties of beer, you’ll have drunk your way clear through the afternoon — and 450 years of Pensacola history. You’ll likely also be badly in need of a good steak.
Fortunately, McGuire’s Irish Pub is just a short walk away. The landmark restaurant and bar is famed around the world for its bizarre traditions, which include inviting guests to staple autographed dollar bills to the walls and ceiling and demanding that first-time patrons kiss a mounted moose head.
The pub also boasts a traditional oak-and-copper brewery, which churns out gallon after gallon of the pub’s five signature beers, as well as a rotating selection of seasonal brews.
The Irish Red is the crowd favorite and goes especially well with McGuire’s signature steaks. My recommendation? Go for the New York Strip, 16 ounces of prime USDA-certified, aged beef grilled over a wood fire and served sizzling in garlic butter.
It’ll cure what ails you and, probably, send you packing again for that warm patch of grass.

McGuire's Irish Pub
McGuire’s Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. In 1982 McGuire’s moved to its current location; Pensacola’s original 1927 Old Firehouse. Inside the pub you’ll find a turn-of-the-century, New York Irish Saloon themed 615-seat restaurant. In 1996, a second location, McGuire’s Irish Pub of Destin opened on beautiful Destin Harbor with the same great food and live Irish entertainment.
Wednesday Video Update (9/5/18)
Gordon is inland over south Mississippi, moving more slowly now, off to the northwest. Gordon will have a lingering affect on Alabama’s weather today. Parts of the state could even see some spin-up tornadoes. I’ll tell you what we can expect, and we’ll ahead to the end of the week and through the weekend. The tropics are starting to get busier, as we reach the statistical peak of the season. I’ll show you three more systems we are watching, on your Wednesday morning personal weather briefing.

Juana's, Navarre Beach, Florida
Saturday, June 17, we went to Juana's on Navarre beach which is one of my most absolute favorite places! Now fair warning... this is specifically about daytime Juana's! This place is totally different once the sun goes down.
Juana's is more of a beach complex than just a restaurant which offers a little bit of everything. A little hard to get to but in the perfect place, Juana's is situated on the South east corner where the Santa Rosa Sound and Navarre beach meet.
Juana's began as nothing more than a tiny sun shade back in the late 80's and has transformed over the years to the pagoda patio that it is today. Juana's does a fabulous job of bringing the outside in, giving you the feeling that you have never left the beach and are part of the action. Juana's has become famous with the locals for their beach volleyball tournaments and leagues. It can get pretty competitive. If Volleyball is not your thing they also offer Jet ski and sail boat rentals along with plenty of beach area to park your own should you decide to drive up in that.
On this particular day we decided to grab a quick pizza at the walk up and order area know as Juana's bites. However, you can also eat a little more formal next door at Sailors Grill restaurant where you will find great food in a more traditional beach style indoor restaurant. With that said, I still highly recommend grabbing a beer at the pagoda beach bar, ordering a pizza and soaking in the sun on the patio while you wait, maybe even catch a great volley ball game on the side.
Because Juana's is situated on Navarre Beach which sits between the Eglin Air Force Base Beach Range and the Gulf Shores National Seashore, the area is not near as commercially developed as Destin or Pensacola Beach which gives it a quaint, locals feel that we love. To be honest, the only real way to understand is to experience it yourself. Before you do, check out the web site below.
Here are the scores for the restaurant. We have divided the scoring into 3 categories. Food, Service, and Overall Experience giving the restaurant a possible total of 90 points.
FOOD: TOTAL 25 OUT OF 30 POINTS
Coleton: 9
Mom: 9
Dad: 9
SERVICE: 26 OUT OF 30 POINTS
Coleton: 9
Mom: 9
Dad: 9
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: TOTAL 25 OUT OF 30 (Parking not good!)
Coleton: 10
Mom: 9
Dad: 9
TOTAL SCORE 82 OUT OF 90 POINTS. Highest score yet! In high school Juana's would have received a 91% Awesome! Highly recommended.

Pensacola is a Year Round Destination
Pensacola, FL is, in our opinion, a super underrated town. There's so things to do than just Pensacola beach. Well, yes, the beaches are gorgeous along the Emerald Coast (we live near Destin, FL), Pensacola has a lot more to offer.
First, it is called the city of five flags because it has influence from Spain, Great Britain, France, the Confederate States, and of course, the U.S. How many other cities can claim to have been ruled by 5 flags?
Pensacola also has a pretty awesome main strip, Palafox Place, which has a certain charm to it, just like Bourbon Street, but not nearly as 'cray cray.' There are 4 breweries in Pensacola worth visiting - you'll see Pensacola Bay and Perfect Plain in the video.
I might have been most excited about our lodging: we stayed at this super awesome bed and breakfast (Pensacola Victorian Bed & Breakfast). You can book your stay with Booking.com (which will help us out a tiny bit as an affiliate) with this link:
The Pensacola lighthouse in the video is easily accessible as well - if you put it in your GPS, make sure the route isn't going to take you through the Naval Air Station (military base). You want to go in the west gate for civilian access.

Tropical Storm Emily Lashes Florida With Wind and Rain
Tropical Storm Emily quickly strengthened from a ripple of low pressure to a tropical depression and then a tropical storm in just a matter of hours shortly before it made landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast Monday morning.
The storm brought torrential downpours and strong winds to the Tampa area, flooding roadways that were shut down as a result. Closures included the Sunshine Skyway, a key Tampa bridge, which was shut down because of dangerous winds.
The storm knocked out power to 18,000 homes and businesses, according to Florida Gov. Rick Scott. Because of expected impacts from Emily, Scott declared a state of emergency for 31 of the state's 67 counties Monday morning.
Emily's rough seas also stranded two fishermen who had to be rescued in Tampa Bay after their boat sank. They were not injured, according to the Coast Guard.
Emily Developed Quickly, Made Landfall as a Tropical Storm in Florida, and Now is Out to Sea in the Atlantic Ocean
Emily moved ashore as a tropical storm along central Florida's Gulf Coast Monday morning.
Other than a few reports of damage, Emily primarily produced soaking rain in parts of central and South Florida.
Emily is now over the Atlantic Ocean and will have no further impact in the U.S.
Emily developed from a small area of low pressure along a washed-out front.
What was once Tropical Storm Emily has now left Florida behind after a whirlwind landfall Monday featuring heavy rain and some local wind damage.
Some pockets of locally heavy rain are possible across the southern Florida Peninsula, the Florida Keys, and northwest Bahamas Tuesday, but less widespread than we've seen the past few days.
(INTERACTIVE: Your Local Radar Loop)
Impact Recap
In East Naples, wind gusts up to 30 mph damaged a roof at a construction site Monday afternoon. Debris from the roof caused damage to a pickup truck, though no injuries were reported.
(MORE: Hurricane Central)
Winds damaged the roof of a mobile home south of Bradenton late Monday morning. Gusts close to 60 mph prompted closure of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge linking St. Petersburg to Manatee County.
Early Monday morning at the Outrigger Beach Resort in Fort Myers Beach, a section of a roof was blown off one building and landed on another one. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
A spotter in Hillsborough County near Valrico measured over 8 inches of rain as of 1 p.m. EDT Monday. Street flooding prompted a closure of a stretch of Ninth Street, according to the spotter.
Most landfalling tropical cyclones come with at least 24 hours advance warning, usually more.
This all started with a cold front that dropped south into the northern Gulf of Mexico during the weekend, then stalled out.
You don't typically see cold fronts penetrate that far south this deep in the summer. The end of July is typically hazy, hot and humid in the southeast U.S., not featuring strangely comfortable air masses plunging from Canada into the Deep South.
(MORE: 7 Odd Things We Saw in the Weather in Late July)
Early in the hurricane season, these old fronts are typically monitored closely for tropical development.
Ripples of low pressure can form along these stationary fronts and, if thunderstorms cluster near those surface low-pressure ripples, a tropical depression or storm can quickly form.
In Emily's case, a swirl of low pressure was evident on radar and satellite imagery Sunday morning about 100 miles south of Pensacola, Florida.
Sunday night, thunderstorms near the circulation became more vigorous and concentrated, with several cloud-to-ground lightning strikes documented, as it moved east-southeast.
