The effects of the Chinese BRI on UAE Investment
Belt and Road initiative | Knight Frank Middle East | Taimur Khan
The Belt and Road Initiative was launched by China in 2013 with an aim to revive the great Silk Road as well as provide a new platform for multilateral cooperation to create new trade routes, economic links and business networks.
It covers 69 countries and encompassing around 60% of the world’s population and 40% of global GDP. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is expected to deploy 900 billion US Dollars in investment.
Knight Frank report “New Frontiers” analysis of the UAE’s prospects as a result of the initiative giving the UAE ease to do business as a strategic location. It has become a focal point for Chinese capital within the region.
Over 4200 firms have set up base within the UAE to serve not only Gulf Countries (GCC) but also African countries as well.
The partnership between these two countries has existed since 1984. But more recently, the focal point of this investment has been Dubai. China is Dubai’s largest non-owed partner.
We have seen an increase in trade, an increase in tourism and real estate investment.
In the year to Q1, 2017, Chinese tourists visiting Dubai increased by 60% making the 4th largest nationality to visit Dubai. The Chinese also consistently ranks among the top 10 most active real estate investors within Dubai.
The UAE ranks third in terms of market invest potential out of these 67 countries.
The ties between China and the UAE are expected to grow in the coming years as Dubai strengthens its position as a global hub for Travel, Trade and investment ahead of Expo 2020.

Manchuria:
Manchuria is a modern name, first created by Japanese, given to a large geographic region in Northeast Asia. Depending on the context, Manchuria can either refer to a region that falls entirely within the People's Republic of China, or a larger region divided between China and Russia. The region that falls entirely within modern China is now usually referred to as Northeast China in China, although Manchuria is widely used outside of China to denote the geographical and historical region. This region is the traditional homeland of the Xianbei, Khitan, and Jurchen (later called Manchu) peoples, who built several states historically, although no term for Manchuria exists in the Manchu language, which originally referred to the area as the Three Eastern Provinces.
Manchuria consists mainly of the northern side of the funnel-shaped North China Craton, a large area of tilled and overlaid Precambrian rocks spanning 100 million hectares. The North China Craton was an independent continent before the Triassic period and is known to have been the northernmost piece of land in the world during the Carboniferous. The Khingan Mountains in the west are a Jurassic mountain range formed by the collision of the North China Craton with the Siberian Craton, which marked the final stage of the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea.
No part of Manchuria was glaciated during the Quaternary, but the surface geology of most of the lower-lying and more fertile parts of Manchuria consists of very deep layers of loess, which have been formed by wind-borne movement of dust and till particles formed in glaciated parts of the Himalayas, Kunlun Shan and Tien Shan, as well as the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts.Soils are mostly fertile Mollisols and Fluvents except in the more mountainous parts where they are poorly developed Orthents, as well as in the extreme north where permafrost occurs and Orthels dominate.
The climate of Manchuria has extreme seasonal contrasts, ranging from humid, almost tropical heat in the summer to windy, dry, Arctic cold in the winter. This pattern occurs because the position of Manchuria on the boundary between the great Eurasian continental landmass and the huge Pacific Ocean causes complete monsoonal wind reversal.
In the summer, when the land heats faster than the ocean, low pressure forms over Asia and warm, moist south to southeasterly winds bring heavy, thundery rain, yielding annual rainfall ranging from 400 mm (16 in.), or less in the west, to over 1150 mm (45 in.) in the Changbai Mountains. Temperatures in the summer are very warm to hot, with July average maxima ranging from 31 °C (88 °F) in the south to 24 °C (75 °F) in the extreme north. Except in the far north near the Amur River, high humidity causes major discomfort at this time of year.
In the winter, however, the vast Siberian High causes very cold, north to northwesterly winds that bring temperatures as low as −5 °C (23 °F) in the extreme south and −30 °C (−22 °F) in the north where the zone of discontinuous permafrost reaches northern Heilongjiang. However, because the winds from Siberia are exceedingly dry, snow falls only on a few days every winter, and it is never heavy. This explains why corresponding latitudes of North America were fully glaciated during glacial periods of the Quaternary while Manchuria, though even colder, always remained too dry to form glaciers – a state of affairs enhanced by stronger westerly winds from the surface of the ice sheet in Europe.

Shanghai (Chinese: 上海, Mandarin pronunciation: [ʂâŋ.xài] (About this soundlisten), Wu pronunciation: [zɑ̃.hɛ] (About this soundlisten)) is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city proper in the world, with a population of 24.18 million as of 2017.[13][14] It is a global financial centre[15] and transport hub, with the world's busiest container port.[16] Located in the Yangtze River Delta, it sits on the south edge of the estuary of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the East China coast. The municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the north, south and west, and is bounded to the east by the East China Sea.[17]
As a major administrative, shipping and trading city, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to trade and recognition of its favourable port location and economic potential. The city was one of five treaty ports forced open to foreign trade following the British victory over China in the First Opium War. The subsequent 1842 Treaty of Nanking and 1844 Treaty of Whampoa allowed the establishment of the Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession. The city then flourished as a centre of commerce between China and other parts of the world (predominantly the Occident), and became the primary financial hub of the Asia-Pacific region in the 1930s.[18] However, with the Communist Party takeover of the mainland in 1949, trade was limited to other socialist countries, and the city's global influence declined. In the 1990s, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city. It has since re-emerged as a hub for international trade and finance; it is the home of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world's largest by market capitalization.[19]
Shanghai has been described as the showpiece of the booming economy of mainland China;[20][21] renowned for its Lujiazui skyline, and museums and historic buildings, such as those along The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden.

China To Build First Underwater High Speed Railway
The Chinese government has approved a project to build the first underwater bullet train route in the country, a media report said on Thursday. The line will connect Ningbo, a port city south of Shanghai, to Zhoushan, an archipelago off the east coast, CNN reported. The proposed underwater tunnel will be a part of the 77-km Yong-Zhou Railway plan to boost tourism and create a two-hour-commute zone within Zhejiang province. First mentioned in a government transportation plan in 2005, the feasibility study of the Yong-Zhou Railway plan was approved by Beijing in November. Within the 77 km railway route, some 70.92 km of tracks will be newly built, including a 16.2 km undersea section. The new route will transport travellers from Hangzhou -- capital city of Zhejiang -- to Zhoushan in 80 minutes. The current journey takes about 4.5 hours by bus or a 2.5-hour drive by personal vehicle. Seven stations are planned for the entire route, including four new stations and three redeveloped ones. At a whopping 25.2 billion yuan ($3 billion), the project is expected to begin next year and is due for completion in 2025.

Pattaya Thailand 2019 by Drone 4K
Pattaya (Thai: พัทยา, RTGS: Phatthaya, pronounced [pʰát.tʰā.jāː] (About this soundlisten)) is a resort city in Thailand. It is on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of Bangkok, within, but not part of, Bang Lamung District in the province of Chonburi. Pattaya City (Thai: เมืองพัทยา, RTGS: Mueang Phatthaya) is a self-governing municipal area which covers tambons Nong Prue and Na Klua and parts of Huai Yai and Nong Pla Lai. The city is in the industrial Eastern Seaboard zone, along with Si Racha, Laem Chabang, and Chonburi. Pattaya is at the center of the Pattaya-Chonburi Metropolitan Area—a conurbation in Chonburi Province—with a population of roughly 1,000,000.
Thailand,[a] officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam,[b] is a country at the centre of the Southeast Asian Indochinese Peninsula composed of 76 provinces. At 513,120 km2 (198,120 sq mi) and over 68 million people, Thailand is the world's 50th-largest country by total area and the 22nd-most-populous country. The capital and largest city is Bangkok, a special administrative area. Thailand is bordered to the north by Myanmar and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Myanmar. Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, and Indonesia and India on the Andaman Sea to the southwest. It is a unitary state. Although nominally the country is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, the most recent coup, in 2014, established a de facto military dictatorship under a junta.
Tai peoples migrated from southwestern China to mainland Southeast Asia from the 11th century; the oldest known mention of their presence in the region by the exonym Siamese dates to the 12th century. Various Indianised kingdoms such as the Mon kingdoms, Khmer Empire and Malay states ruled the region, competing with Thai states such as the Kingdoms of Ngoenyang, Sukhothai, Lan Na and Ayutthaya, which rivaled each other. Documented European contact began in 1511 with a Portuguese diplomatic mission to Ayutthaya, now one of the great powers in the region. Ayutthaya reached its peak during cosmopolitan Narai's reign (1656–1688), gradually declining thereafter until being ultimately destroyed in the 1767 Burmese–Siamese War. Taksin (r. 1767–1782) quickly reunified the fragmented territory and established the short-lived Thonburi Kingdom. He was succeeded in 1782 by Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (r. 1782–1809), the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty and founder of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, which lasted into the early 20th century.
Through the 18th and 19th centuries, Siam faced pressure from France and the United Kingdom, including forced concessions of territory; nevertheless, it remained the only Southeast Asian country to avoid direct Western rule. Following a bloodless revolution in 1932, Siam became a constitutional monarchy and changed its official name to Thailand. While it joined the Allies in World War I, Thailand was an Axis satellite in World War II. In the late 1950s, a military coup under Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat revived the monarchy's historically influential role in politics. Thailand became a major ally of the United States, and played a key anti-communist role in the region as a member of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). Apart from a brief period of parliamentary democracy in the mid-1970s, Thailand has periodically alternated between democracy and military rule. In 2013, Thailand endured a political crisis that culminated in two coups and the establishment of its current and 20th constitution by a military junta.
Thailand is a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and remains a major ally of the US.[15][16] Despite its comparatively sporadic changes in leadership, it is considered a regional power in Southeast Asia and a middle power in global affairs.[17] With a high level of human development, the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, and the 20th-largest by PPP, Thailand is classified as a newly industrialized economy; manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism are leading sectors of the economy.[18][19]

Purpose of Chinese Drills: Threat Abroad or Reassure The Military?
Follow us on TWITTER:
Like us on FACEBOOK:
China is holding large-scale exercises of Navy,
People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Air Force.
Naval exercise will be held in three sea zones;
PLA will exercise across six military regions
for three consecutive months.
Air force will exercise in Eastern and Central China.
What’s the reason that China holds drills?
Let’s take a look.
The naval drills are held in Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea,
East China Sea and Beibu Gulf.
The drills will take place in Bohai Strait, Northern Yellow Sea
from July 25 to August 1.
Firing exercises held from July 26 to August 1
in Northern Gulf water; and
the Eastern Sea firing drills held from July 29 to August 2.
The PLA drills would be the longest.
Six military regions started across region live-fire
exercises 10 times for three-months.
From July 15, ten remote rockets, artillery, air defense brigade
from Nanjing, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu and
Ji’nan have entered into six training bases.
Meanwhile, the Air Force located in East and Central region
of China for a 26-day exercise.
Now air control has launched in East and Central regions.
At least 12 airports had flights cancelled or delayed.
Chris Wu, US-based chief editor of China Affairs magazine
says that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is corrupt and
in chaos.
It has caused a declining economy and social unrest.
The only force the CCP can use is military,
using drills to show its power still in control.
Chris Wu: “The CCP’s first goal is to protect its power.
Because the decree couldn’t be passed smoothly,
there is a saying “decree couldn’t be sent out of Zhongnanhai.”
Under this circumstance, how does the CCP show its power
still in control?
It uses military drills to show strength.”
Chris Wu says that through the drills, the CCP intends
to stir up a wave of patriotism.
In order to divert civilians’ anger from domestic problems,
economic decline, unemployment and more.
At the same time, to show its muscle
to Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and other countries.
Actually, CCP’s military drills have provoked worries
in its neighboring countries.
Yu Maochun, Professor of US Naval Academy comments that
the drills would possibly increase the worries
to its surrounding countries.
It would push these countries to work together,
to consider the CCP as their common threat.
This would bring the opposite results to the CCP
in its political struggle with other countries.
Japan has more concerns about Chinese drills
held in the East Sea region.
The state-run media published an article on July 25,
the date of the 120th anniversary of the First Sino-Japanese War.
The article said that “the war becomes a painful scar
in Chinese people’s mind.
Facing Japanese rightists’ challenges, we won’t shoot the gun first,
but absolutely not allow you to fire the second shot.”
Ding Shufan, Professor of College of International Affairs,
Taiwan: “I neither think the drills link with tensions between
the two countries, nor with Sino-Japanese War.
Now Chinese military need reforms,
so through the exercises to verify it.
I think this is the first reason.
The second reason is that from last year,
the CCP military was fighting corruption.”
Ding Shufan says that after the CCP cracked down students'
protest on June 4, 1989,
it has held a large-scale exercise to reassure soldiers.
The current drills are also to stabilize the military.
Because fight corruption has stirred up people’s mind.
Xu Caihou, the top military official has been dismissed.
He was expelled from the CCP in June and has been
handed over to court.
The state-run media revealed that Xu has controlled
the military’s top level promotion for more than a decade.
He relied on Jiang Zemin’s support, ignoring Hu Jintao,
the former Chairman of military commission.
Xu also promoted his allies in the military,
selling military ranks to gain the wealth.
After Xu Caihou’s downfall, his corruption with military
officials whom he promoted, was partially exposed.
For example, Xu appointed Gu Junshan as a logistic chief,
thus Xu has accepted bribes of 40 million yuan cash and
four luxury apartments in Shanghai.
Media also revealed that the regime has found a leather case
without seals in Xu’s home.
There was 10 million yuan cash in the case.
A personal profile of Ye Wanyong, the former political
commissar of Sichuan military region, was also in the case.
Ding Shufan says that Xu promoted too many people.
The anti-corruption campaign has stirred up the minds
of officials who had been promoted by Xu.
Xi Jinping, the current military leader wants to
reassure the military via the drills.

BSQ - an interactive LED wall
“BSQ” is an interactive LED wall in a clubhouse near “West Lake” of Hangzhou, China.
In the video, “Qiantang River” was crossing the city. The modern building will transform to ancient architecture when touched by people. If someone walks along the wall, some wave will follow him. The background sound also reacts to people’s interaction.
The project used two HOKUYO URG-10LX Scanning Laser Rangefinders, one for multi-touch, and another for tracking people’s position.
About software, python got the tracking data from Rangefinder, and sent it to Max (aka MaxMSP) through OSC, then Max used it to react with the visual and sound part.
