COOLGARDIE KALGOORLIE GWALIA GOLD MINES 1976 OUTBACK WESTERN AUSTRALIA
AA 1976 TRIP, The main place that has survived the harsh conditions of the Western Australia Goldfields is Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a busy city which is a blend of modern and historical architecture and raw outback life. From Kalgoorlie-Boulder there are three main routes which you can take, depending on where you want to get to.
Heading north you will pass the small town of Broad Arrow, with its total population of about 20 people, and further north Menzies which has a population of about 100 people. There are several historical buildings to visit within the towns, including Menzies Town Hall which has no clock in its clock tower due to the clock sinking along with the boat that was bringing it from England. North again is the railhead of Leonora, and Gwalia which is home to the large Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine. A turn off between Menzies and Leonora will take to several other small mining towns, including Kookynie, Malcolm and Niagara.

GWALIA - The Abandoned Ghost Town
Gwalia is an abandoned ghost town approximately 350 Klms north of Kalgoorlie, and 5 klms south of Leonora. The town's only industry was gold mining, and mining ceased in 1963 after a very bad mine accident, after which the town was abandoned. The very first mine manager at the Gwalia Gold Mine was Herbert Hoover, who later became President of the United States. At it's peak, Gwalia had a population of 1,200 people.
All the abandoned buildings in Gwalia are preserved in time and visitors can freely walk into them and see that the furniture and various utensils that have been left behind.

A few pictures of the S.O.G.Leonora open cut mine and the mobile equipment workshop back when it was mined by the Sons Of Gwalia company themselves.They used three Atlas Copco Roc 812 drill rigs, a Komatsu PC 600 digger and six Komatsu HD465 dash I & 3 dump trucks. Also a few pictures from a party on skid row.

This is our first time going for a road trip ever in Western Australia! On the easter break, we decided to just go to the city near from the city that we currently live in so that we don't need to stay overnight.
Turn out we went to Menzies, Lake Ballard, and Gwalia Ghost Town in Leonora. What we love the most was the scenery along the way. It was such a breathtaking view!!! I have never in my life seeing and experiencing such a beautiful highway road trip!!!
