BIG INABA MAD MASS
Four architecture offices, BIG, INABA, MAD, and Mass Studies have joined forces to create four urban proposals for the city of Ansan, South Korea. The project, curated by Jeffrey Inaba, will be exhibited at Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art from December 17th 2008.
At first glance, these proposals represent a new urban plan for the city: a suite of would-be iconic and monumental new buildings. Yet the proposals also function at a different scale: in the gallery itself, the models used to advertise each project take on a new role, as furniture for the gallery space.
[KOREA] Gyeonggi-do National Arboretum
[KOREA] Gyeonggi-do National Arboretum
경기도 국립수목원
Korea National Arboretum (KNA) is situated in Gwangneung forest, between Namyangju-si and Pocheon-si, in Gyeonggi province. Gwangneung was a royal forest, which surrounded a mausoleum of King Sejo of Chosun dynasty. Thus, over the last 500 years it has been strictly managed in order to minimize human disturbance.
The Gwangneung arboretum, which belongs to the Korea Forest Research Institute, was established in 1987 and has been open to the public since then. In May 24. 1999, it became the Korea National Arboretum. In KNA, there are 15 specilaized plant gardens, forest museum, forest zoo, herbarium and seed bank.
The missions of Arboretum are to conserve and develop plant resources through comprehensive research, and to promote the public's understanding of the forests.
The methods to carry out our missions are as follow:
To develop our regional reference collections and make them more
accessible to a large number of users.
To conduct research in systematics, biological
interactions, conservation gene resource and horticulture.
To support the conservation and sustainable use of plant
resources in Korea and abroad.
To inform the wider public the importance of forest and nature for human being.
To conserve the bio-diversity in Gwangneung forest.

Local Korean elections: Gyeonggi-do province citizens mindful of ferry disaster
Now... Gyeonggi-do province... a region on the outskirts of Seoul is getting a lot of attention in this year's elections.
Not only because of its location and large population, but also for the tight race that is expected there between the ruling and main opposition party--
Our Connie Lee is on site - Connie?
Hi Conn-young--- Here at this polling station in the city of Suwon in Gyeonggi-do Province... there has been a steady flow of voters--- ranging in all ages---coming here to cast their ballots.
Now citizens here are voting for the governor of Gyeonggi-do province.
The outcome, however, is very hard to predict this year, because it's one of the tightest races in the nation.
But, besides that... a lot of eyes are on this area... because of the regional significance Gyeonggi-do province holds.
It is located right outside of the capital city... so politics here, and ultimately the outcome of the race here... play an influential role in the central government.
Gyeonggi-do province also covers a large area, being the most populated province, with almost 10-million eligible voters.
Also... this year, the Sewol-ho ferry disaster is expected to affect voter sentiment nationwide, but especially for people in this province.
The disaster touched close to home for citizens here, because Danwon High School--the school that lost hundreds of students and teachers in the ferry accident, is in Gyeonggi-do province, in the city of Ansan.
I talked to two voters here,... who said that the ferry disaster definitely affected the way they voted.
There are a lot of issues at stake, but because of the Sewol-ho ferry incident, safety issues are important. // [ ...] When I made my vote, I was more mindful of which party I was voting for, rather than the individual candidate.
What I want from the local elections has changed from what I wanted in the last presidential election. Now I feel like certain parties have too much power, and that the power needs to be more spread out.
Well the race for governor for Gyeonggi-do Province is one of the hottest battlefields-- what do we know about the two candidates in this neck-and-neck race?
The two governor-hopefuls...
ruling Saenuri Party candidate Nam Kyung-pil...
and Kim Jin-pyo... { }
of the main opposition party, New Politics Alliance for Democracy...
actually have quite the number of similarities-- they're both from the city of Suwon,... went to the same high school... and have both emphasized safety issues and economic growth in their political platforms.
They're also experienced politicians... Nam being a five-time lawmaker, and Kim a three-time lawmaker.
The race is neck and neck.
The latest opinion poll, available to the public, showed that Nam's approval rating was just SLIGHTLY higher than Kim's.
Reporting live from Suwon, in Gyeonggi-do Province, this has been Connie Lee.

Gabriel Rico - Artist
MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by artist Gabriel Rico.
Born in 1980 in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, Gabriel Rico now lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico. His work is characterized by the interrelation of seemingly disparate objects. A self-proclaimed “ontologist with a heuristic methodology,” Rico pairs found, collected and manufactured materials to create sculptures that invite viewers to reflect on the relationship between humans and our natural environment. Rico frequently uses neon, taxidermy, ceramics, branches and more personal pieces of his past to create an equation or formulation. His works achieve a precise geometry despite the organic, roughly hewn character of their materials. His installations ironically and poetically combine natural and unnatural forms, insisting on a necessary contemplation on their asymmetry as well as our own cultural and political flaws.
Gabriel Rico studied architecture earning his BA from ITESO in 2004 and received the ASU Art Museum & CALA Alliance award in 2017. He has exhibited at multiple museums and galleries including Perrotin in Seoul, South Korea, 2019; The Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, 2019; Perrotin in New York, 2017; The Power Station in Dallas, Texas, 2017; ASU Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona, 2017; and Gyeonggi Creation Center in Ansan- do, South Korea, 2016. His work is included in the 58th International Venice Biennale.
