The tiger leaping gorge (Yunnan - China)
(EN) Tiger Leaping Gorge is a canyon on the Yangtze River -- locally called the Golden Sands River (金沙江; Jīnshā Jiāng) -- located 60 km north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. It is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Heritage Site.
Around 15 km in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between 5,596 metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山; Yùlóng Xuĕshān) and 5,396 m Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山; Hābā Xuĕshān) in a series of rapids under steep 2000 metre cliffs. Legend says that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at the narrowest point (still 25 metres wide), hence the name.
Administratively, the river in this area forms the border between Yulong Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang City (right bank) and Shangri-La County of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (left bank).
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the world's deepest river canyon, depending on the exact definition used.[citation needed] The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and foreign hikers. The gorge is not considered navigable. In the early 1980s, four rafters attempted to go down the gorge and were never seen again. In 1986, the first known successful attempt to sail through the gorge was made by the first expedition to float down the entire length of the Yangtze, starting at the river's high source at the Gelandandong glacier lake.
The area was officially opened to foreign tourists in 1993, but had attracted adventurous backpackers already in the 1980s. Officials plan to improve the existing trails and roads, bringing tour buses and more development. These plans arouse highly varied reactions among the local population, from strong opposition to strong support.[1]

Tiger Leaping Gorge & Zhongdian aka Shangra-La, China
Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja hikes Tiger Leaping Gorge and wanders through Zhongdian (Shangra-La) the third of Yunnan's northwestern unique cities.
Tiger Leaping Gorge was amazing to see. An increidlbe hike down but the hike up was 10 times harder! It was worth it to see the rushing water at it's base. Zhongdian was nice however due to heavy rain it was hard to get out into the country side and see so many of the great scenery. I did manage to get a few video clips of the city though - Terry

Zhongdian
Shangri-La County is a primarily Tibetan county in northwestern Yunnan province, Southwest China. Zhongdian was renamed Shangrila for marketing reasons. Signs in bus stations still use Zhongdian. The original Shangrila, from James Hilton's novel The Lost Horizon, was a (fictional) hidden paradise whose inhabitants lived for centuries. Hilton (who never went to China) located his Shangri-La in the Kunlun mountains. However, elements of his story were apparently inspired by National Geographic articles about various places in eastern Tibet, including Zhongdian; hence China's rationale for claiming the name. The local Tibetan population refers to it by the name Gyalthang, which is the Tibetan name for Jiantang Town, the county seat.

Just a couple clips that were shot randomly on our ascent of the 哈巴雪山 (5392m) in Yunnan Province, China. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to capture the view from above the snowline as exhaustion made me forget to film :D. Hope this still gives an impression of the stunning scenery up there.

Treeking in the Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Gorge), Yunnan, China
About 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Lijiang Old Town lying between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) and Haba Snow Mountain (Haba Xueshan) is Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Gorge), which is believed to be the deepest gorge in the world. From the top of the gorge you look down the steeply angled (70-90 degrees) mountain sides to the rushing Golden Sands (Jingsha) River with its 18 frothing rapids more than 200 meters (about 700 feet) below.

香格里拉哈巴雪山 (Shangri-la Haba Snow Mountain)

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (simplified Chinese: 玉龙雪山; traditional Chinese: 玉龍雪山; pinyin: Yùlóng Xuěshān) is a mountain massif or small mountain range in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Lijiang, in Yunnan province, China. Its highest peak is named Shanzidou (扇子陡) and is 5,596 m (18,360 ft) above sea level.
The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain massif forms the bulk of the larger Yulong Mountains, that stretch further north. The northwestern flank of the massif forms one side of the Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia, 虎跳峡), which has a popular trekking route on the other side. In this gorge, the Jinsha (upper Yangtze) River descends dramatically between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountain. The Yulong Mountains lie to the south of the Yun Range and are part of Southwest China's greater Hengduan Mountains.[5]
Settlements surrounding Jade Dragon Snow Mountain include Baisha Town to the south, Longpan Township to the west, Daju Township to the northeast, and Jade Water Village at the foot of the mountain to the east

After having seen this we went to Zhongdian which is now called SHANGRI-LA but we stop to see Tibetan people.
